    Ethnicity, voter alignment and political party affiliation - an African case: Zambia

    Conventional wisdom holds that ethnicity provides the social cleavage for voting behav-iour and party affiliation in Africa. Because this is usually inferred from aggregate data of national election results, it might prove to be an ecological fallacy. The evidence based on individual data from an opinion survey in Zambia suggests that ethnicity matters for voter alignment and even more so for party affiliation, but it is certainly not the only factor. The analysis also points to a number of qualifications which are partly methodology-related. One is that the degree of ethnic voting can differ from one ethno-political group to the other depending on various degrees of ethnic mobilisation. Another is that if smaller eth-nic groups or subgroups do not identify with one particular party, it is difficult to find a significant statistical correlation between party affiliation and ethnicity - but that does not prove that they do not affiliate along ethnic lines.Wahlverhalten und Mitgliedschaft in politischen Parteien Afrikas ist nur wenig untersucht worden. Gewöhnlich wird argumentiert, dass Ethnizität als soziale Konfliktlinie das Wahlverhalten und die Parteienmitgliedschaft strukturiert. Da dieses Argument auf hoch aggregierten Wahldaten beruht, kann hier ein ökologischer Fehlschuss vorliegen. Die vorliegende Analyse beruht deshalb auf individuellen Umfragedaten aus Sambia. Das Ergebnis ist, dass Ethnizität tatsächlich eine Rolle für das Wahlverhalten und die Parteienmitgliedschaft spielt, aber keineswegs den einzigen Erklärungsfaktor darstellt. Die Analyse offenbart zudem eine Reihe von Einschränkungen und Qualifizierungen, die teilweise methodischer Natur sind. Eine ist, dass ethnisches Wahlverhalten und Parteienmitgliedschaft von einer ethnischen Gruppe zur anderen unterschiedlich ist, dass, wenn sich kleinere ethnische Gruppen oder Untergruppen mit keiner Partei identifizieren, es schwierig wird, statistisch signifikante Korrelationen zu finden - was indessen noch nicht beweist, dass Ethnizität keine Rolle spielt

    Tropical tele-connections to the Mediterranean climate and weather

    Some strong natural fluctuations of climate in the Eastern Mediterranean (EM) region are shown to be connected to the major tropical systems. Potential relations between EM rainfall extremes to tropical systems, e.g. El Niño, Indian Monsoon and hurricanes, are demonstrated. For a specific event, high resolution modelling of the severe flood on 3-5 December 2001 in Israel suggests a relation to hurricane Olga. In order to understand the factors governing the EM climate variability in the summer season, the relationship between extreme summer temperatures and the Indian Monsoon was examined. Other tropical factors like the Red-Sea Trough system and the Saharan dust are also likely to contribute to the EM climate variability

    A member of the Whirly family is a multifunctional RNA- and DNA-binding protein that is essential for chloroplast biogenesis

    ‘Whirly’ proteins comprise a plant-specific protein family whose members have been described as DNA-binding proteins that influence nuclear transcription and telomere maintenance, and that associate with nucleoids in chloroplasts and mitochondria. We identified the maize WHY1 ortholog among proteins that coimmunoprecipitate with CRS1, which promotes the splicing of the chloroplast atpF group II intron. ZmWHY1 localizes to the chloroplast stroma and to the thylakoid membrane, to which it is tethered by DNA. Genome-wide coimmunoprecipitation assays showed that ZmWHY1 in chloroplast extract is associated with DNA from throughout the plastid genome and with a subset of plastid RNAs that includes atpF transcripts. Furthermore, ZmWHY1 binds both RNA and DNA in vitro. A severe ZmWhy1 mutant allele conditions albino seedlings lacking plastid ribosomes; these exhibit the altered plastid RNA profile characteristic of ribosome-less plastids. Hypomorphic ZmWhy1 mutants exhibit reduced atpF intron splicing and a reduced content of plastid ribosomes; aberrant 23S rRNA metabolism in these mutants suggests that a defect in the biogenesis of the large ribosomal subunit underlies the ribosome deficiency. However, these mutants contain near normal levels of chloroplast DNA and RNAs, suggesting that ZmWHY1 is not directly required for either DNA replication or for global plastid transcription

    Pergolide As Primary Therapy for Macroprolactinomas

    The objective of this study is to determine whether pergolide therapy is an effective modality for the de novo treatment of patients with macroprolactinomas. Twenty-two consecutive patients with macroprolactinomas were included in the study and followed prospectively. These included 16 men and 6 women in whom pregnancy was not of concern. Pergolide was administered once or twice a day depending on the patient's preference. Ten patients received 0.1 mg daily as a maintenance regimen and in the others the daily dose ranged from 0.05 to 0.5 mg. Eight patients reported minor but tolerable side effects. One patient had to be switched to cabergoline because of intolerable nausea. After a mean of 12 months (range, 3–36), mean PRL levels declined from 3,135 ng/ml (range, 126–31,513) to 50 ng/ml (3–573), representing a mean PRL suppression of 88% (range, 0–99). PRL levels became normal in 15 patients and decreased to 25–40 ng/ml in 3 others. The mean tumor volume shrinkage was 25% or greater in 19 patients (86%), 50% or greater in 17 patients (77%), and 75% or greater in 10 patients (45%). Visual abnormalities were reversible after pergolide therapy in all but 1 of 12 patients with initially abnormal formal visual testing. Two out of 4 premenopausal women did not normalize PRL levels and had persistent oligomenorrhea. Testosterone was low in 14 men at presentation and normalized in 3 with pergolide therapy. We conclude that pergolide is a safe, inexpensive, and generally well-tolerated dopamine agonist for the treatment of macroprolactinomas in men and women in whom pregnancy is not of concern.     Rapid Re-expansion of a Macroprolactinoma After Early Discontinuation of Bromocriptine

    Prolactin (PRL)-secreting pituitary adenomas are the most common functioning pituitary tumors. Medical treatment with dopamine agonists is the therapy of choice for macroprolactinomas (≥10 mm). Withdrawal of bromocriptine after weeks or months of uninterrupted therapy has been associated with rapid tumor re-expansion as evidenced by x-ray and CT scanning of the pituitary region. We report a patient with a giant macroprolactinoma who had a dramatic response to bromocriptine (tumor volume shrinkage of 53% within a month) but rapid re-expansion to its original dimensions one week after discontinuation of bromocriptine.
