    Microcantilever based LoC system for coagulation measurements

    In this paper, a microcantilever-based system enabling multiple coagulation tests on the same disposable cartridge is demonstrated. The system consists of independent cartridge and reader unit. The actuation of the nickel cantilevers is conducted remotely with an external electro-coil and remote optical read-out is utilized for sensing. Both Prothrombin Time (PT) and activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT) tests can be conducted on the same cartridge. The system’s repeatability and accuracy is investigated with standard control plasma samples. The results are concordant with the manufacturer’s datasheet. The architecture of the system and the repeatable results makes the system suitable for Point-of-Care applications.TÜBİTA

    Computational speed-up with a single qudit

    Quantum algorithms are known for providing more efficient solutions to certain computational tasks than any corresponding classical algorithm. Here we show that a single qudit is sufficient to implement an oracle based quantum algorithm, which can solve a black-box problem faster than any classical algorithm. For 2d2d permutation functions defined on a set of dd elements, deciding whether a given permutation is even or odd, requires evaluation of the function for at least two elements. We demonstrate that a quantum circuit with a single qudit can determine the parity of the permutation with only one evaluation of the function. Our algorithm provides an example for quantum computation without entanglement since it makes use of the pure state of a qudit. We also present an experimental realization of the proposed quantum algorithm with a quadrupolar nuclear magnetic resonance using a single four-level quantum system, i.e., a ququart.Comment: Combined version of arXiv:1403.5861 [quant-ph] and arXiv:1406.3579 [quant-ph

    Characterization of the Clinical and Immunologic Phenotype and Management of 157 Individuals with 56 Distinct Heterozygous NFKB1 Mutations

    Background: An increasing number of NFKB1 variants are being identified in patients with heterogeneous immunologic phenotypes. Objective: To characterize the clinical and cellular phenotype as well as the management of patients with heterozygous NFKB1 mutations. Methods: In a worldwide collaborative effort, we evaluated 231 individuals harboring 105 distinct heterozygous NFKB1 variants. To provide evidence for pathogenicity, each variant was assessed in silico; in addition, 32 variants were assessed by functional in vitro testing of nuclear factor of kappa light polypeptide gene enhancer in B cells (NF-κB) signaling. Results: We classified 56 of the 105 distinct NFKB1 variants in 157 individuals from 68 unrelated families as pathogenic. Incomplete clinical penetrance (70%) and age-dependent severity of NFKB1-related phenotypes were observed. The phenotype included hypogammaglobulinemia (88.9%), reduced switched memory B cells (60.3%), and respiratory (83%) and gastrointestinal (28.6%) infections, thus characterizing the disorder as primary immunodeficiency. However, the high frequency of autoimmunity (57.4%), lymphoproliferation (52.4%), noninfectious enteropathy (23.1%), opportunistic infections (15.7%), autoinflammation (29.6%), and malignancy (16.8%) identified NF-κB1-related disease as an inborn error of immunity with immune dysregulation, rather than a mere primary immunodeficiency. Current treatment includes immunoglobulin replacement and immunosuppressive agents. Conclusions: We present a comprehensive clinical overview of the NF-κB1-related phenotype, which includes immunodeficiency, autoimmunity, autoinflammation, and cancer. Because of its multisystem involvement, clinicians from each and every medical discipline need to be made aware of this autosomal-dominant disease.     Azgelişmişliğin aşılmasında kritik bir önem atfedilen metalurji sektörünü, gelişmenin yönünün çözümlenebilmesi için en geniş gözlem alanını veren ve bizi gerçeğin bilgisine en çok yaklaştıracak olan sektör olduğundan çalışmamıza konu ettik. Bu başlık altında da spesifik bir alan olarak, planlı kalkınma döneminde, metal işkolunda işçi hareketleri ve özellikle sendikal deneyim üzerinde durduk. Metal işkolunda işçi sendikacılığı, hacmen büyük üretim birimlerinin, yoğunlaştığı belli havzalar çevresinde gelişmişti. Büyük sayılarda sanayi işçisinin birarada bulunduğu ve ağır çalışma koşullarının hüküm sürdüğü sektör, sendikal çalışma için verimli bir zemin olagelmiştir. Öyle ki, gerek dünya ve gerekse Türkiye işçi sınıfı içerisinde örgütlenme eğilimi en yüksek kesimlerin başında metalurji işçilerinin olduğu gözlenmektedir. Türkiye'de de metal işçileri ve onların sendikal örgütü Maden-İş, işçi sınıfının ekonomik mücadelesiyle ideolojik ve politik mücadelesinin ayrılmaz bir bütün olduğu görüşünü temel alan "sınıf ve kitle sendikal anlayışı"yla 1960'lardan sonra, sömürünün sınırlandırılması için ve 1970'lerden sonra giderek sömürünün ortadan kaldırılması için harekete geçmiş, bu nedenle grev hakkı, referandum hakkı, işçi sınıfının politik örgütlenme hakkı gibi pek çok başlıkta siyasal iktidarla ve sermaye çevreleriyle karşıkarşıya gelmiş, 12 Eylül askersel devirmesi ile kapatılıp, üye ve yöneticileri hapsedilmişti. Maden-İş'i bu ölçüde hedef haline getiren en önemli özelliği, yalnızca üyeleri ya da metal işkolunda çalışan işçilerin değil, bir bütün olarak işçi sınıfının çıkarlarını gen bir sendikal anlayışı temsil etmesidir. Bunun çarpıcı tezahürlerinden biri DİSK'in kuruluşunda üstlendiği rol, bir diğeri sadece sendikal alanda değil farklı toplumsal kesimleri hedef alan, Genel Yas eylemi, DGM Direnişi, Ulusal Demokratik Cephe benzeri siyasal çıkışlardır. Kanımızca, 1960'ların sonundan itibaren olgunlaşıp, politize olan Türkiye işçi sınıfının sendikal eylemini anlamanın anahtarı Maden-İş deneyimini anlamaktan geçmektedir. Metnimiz de esas olarak bu deneyimi çözümleme iddiasındadır. ABSTRACT Since the metallurgy industry, having a critical significance in overcoming the underdevelopment, is providing the widest observation area to analyze the direction of development and will be the one that will allow us to approach to the knowledge of trust at most, we have taken it as the subject of our study and under this title we have emphasized on the movements of workers in metal industry and, particularly, on the labor union experience during planned development period as a specific area. Labor unionism in metal industry was developed in certain areas, in which huge manufacturing units in terms of volume were concentrated. This industry, in which high amounts of industrial workers are living together and there are heavy working conditions, was always a productive area for unionist working. Thus, it is observed that metallurgy workers show the highest organization trend among the workers class both in Turkey and throughout the world. Similarly in Turkey, metal industry workers, and their labor union, Maden-İş, has worked a lot for the restriction of exploitation after 1960's and for elimination of exploitation after 1970's with "a unionist approach of classes and masses" based on the point of view that economical struggle of the worker's class is an integral part of ideological and political struggle and therefore has confronted with the political power and holders of the capital in various cases such as strike right, referendum right, political organization right of the workers class, etc. and after it was abolished by the military coup d'état on September 12, and its members and managers were imprisoned. Most important characteristic of Maden-İş that makes it a target was the fact that it was representing not only its members or the workers of metal industry, but also a unionist approach protecting the interests of the entire workers class. One of the most striking signs of this fact was the role it has undertaken in the establishment of DİSK and the other one was its political sallies targeting not only unionist area but also different sections of the society, such as General Mourning action, Resistance to State Security Courts, actions in National Democratic Front, etc. We believe that the key to understand the unionist actions of Turkish workers class, which was matured and politicized after the end of 1960's is to understand the Maden-İş experience and our study is mainly claiming to analyze this experience

    Undernutrition, pathogenic agents, and poor living conditions are of primary importance in the evaluation of adverse environmental conditions' effects on human growth; but child labor (an equally significant factor, especially in underdeveloped countries) is generally overlooked or ignored. The aim of this study is to focus on this subject and clarify the effects of labor on the physical growth and nutritional status of child and adolescent laborers. In this study, the height and weight of 532 male adolescent laborers aged 13.5-18.5 years and their nonlaboring peers (n = 451) (the control group) were measured by standard anthropometric techniques and equipment. The individuals of both groups come from lower socioeconomic strata and share similar living conditions. Data were transformed to z-scores, using the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention's 2000 growth charts. The analyses show that the z-scores for height-forage, weight-for-age, and body mass index (BMI)-for-age were negative in both groups. The z-scores of laborers' height-for-age and weight-for-age values lie below the controls', but there is no significant difference between the two groups' BMI-for-age scores. In the laboring group, the percentages of stunting (-2 SD of height-for-age), underweight (-2 SD of weight-for-age), and wasting (-2 SD of BMI-for-age) were 14.3, 2.6, and 0.2, respectively. These values suggest that malnutrition is not a common problem among adolescent laborers living in Ankara; but laboring is an important cause of faltering in growth, particularly in linear growth, in less or underdeveloped economic environments

    A plane sound wave is incident at an angle θ upon an infinite array of rigid plates, equally spaced and lying along the y-axis, where (x, y) are two-dimensional Cartesian coordinates. The boundary value problem is formulated into a matrix Wiener–Hopf equation whose kernel is, when the plates and interstices are of equal length, decomposable into two factors which commute and have algebraic behaviour at infinity. A closed form analytical solution is then obtained following the usual Wiener–Hopf procedure and numerical results are given for various angles of incidence, as well as different spacings

    A robust and efficient model for transmission of surface plasmon polaritons onto metal–insulator–metal apertures

    A simple yet accurate model for the transmission of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in a finite metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide to the sides of the apertures is proposed and demonstrated to be more accurate than the available models. It is as simple as using a magnetic current density across the plane of the aperture whose value is defined by the SPPs with any number of modes in the waveguide through the equivalence principle. Then, the generated SPPs on both sides of the aperture are extracted from the convolution integral of the equivalent current density and Green’s function. As a result, the model provides the transmission coefficients of the SPPs in the MIM waveguide to the side walls of the aperture accurately and efficiently; not only for symmetric MIM waveguides with a single isolating layer but also non-symmetric ones with multi-layered insulating materials. The results are in very good agreement with those obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method and better than the other approximations available in literature for a wide range of aperture widths
