A dynamical holographic QCD model for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and confinement
In this paper, we present a holographic realization of spontaneous chiral
symmetry breaking and confinement. The latter is realized by building a
solution of 5d Einstein-dilaton gravity leading to a confining quark antiquark
potential. The 4d currents and the quark mass operator associated with chiral
symmetry breaking and creation of meson states are mapped to 5d fields whose
dynamics is given by a non-Abelian Higgs action. We introduce a non-minimal
dilaton coupling to the tachyon potential which has two parameters, one of them
controlling the presence or absence of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and
the other controlling the sign of the chiral condensate as the quark mass
grows. We calculate the masses of vector, scalar, axial-vector and pseudoscalar
mesons, focusing on the effect of chiral symmetry breaking on the spectrum. In
the chiral limit we identify the emergence of a massless state in the
pseudoscalar meson spectrum, i.e., the pion. We calculate all meson decay
constants and confirm that the pion satisfies the Gell-Mann-Oakes relation in

Virtual Compton Scattering off a Spinless Target in AdS/QCD
We study the doubly virtual Compton scattering off a spinless target
within the Anti-de Sitter(AdS)/QCD formalism. We find
that the general structure allowed by the Lorentz invariance and gauge
invariance of the Compton amplitude is not easily reproduced with the standard
recipes of the AdS/QCD correspondence. In the soft-photon regime, where the
semi-classical approximation is supposed to apply best, we show that the
measurements of the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of a target like the
charged pion in real Compton scattering, can already serve as stringent tests.Comment: 21 pages, version to be published in JHEP
Pion and Vector Meson Form Factors in the Kuperstein-Sonnenschein holographic model
We study phenomenological aspects of the holographic model of chiral symmetry
breaking recently introduced by Kuperstein and Sonnenschein (KS). As a first
step, we calculate the spectrum of vector and axial-vector mesons in the KS
model. We numerically compute various coupling constants of the mesons and
pions. Our analysis indicates that vector meson dominance is realized in this
model. The pion, vector meson and axial-vector meson form factors are obtained
and studied in detail. We find good agreement with QCD results. In particular,

Polarized DIS in N=4 SYM: Where is spin at strong coupling?
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we calculate the polarized structure
functions in strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory deformed in
the infrared. We find that the flavor singlet contribution to the g_1 structure
function is vanishingly small, while the flavor non-singlet contribution shows
the Regge behavior at small-x with an intercept slightly less than 1. We
explicitly check that the latter satisfies the moment sum rule. We discuss the
`spin crisis' problem and suggest that at strong coupling the spin of a hadron
entirely comes from the orbital angular momentum.Comment: 24 page
A conical deficit in the AdS4/CFT3 correspondence
Inspired by the AdS/CFT correspondence we propose a new duality that allow
the study of strongly coupled field theories living in a 2+1 conical
space-time. Solving the 4-d Einstein equations in the presence of an infinite
static string and negative cosmological constant we obtain a conical AdS4
space-time whose boundary is identified with the 2+1 cone found by Deser,
Jackiw and 't Hooft. Using the AdS4/CFT3 correspondence we calculate retarded

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus oncoprotein K13 protects against B cell receptor induced growth arrest and apoptosis through NF-ÎșB activation
Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) has been linked to the development of Kaposi's sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma and multicentric Castleman's disease (MCD). We have characterized the role of KSHV-encoded viral FLICE inhibitory protein K13 in the modulation of anti-IgM induced growth arrest and apoptosis in B cells. We demonstrate that K13 protects WEHI 231, an immature B cell line, against anti-IgM induced growth arrest and apoptosis. The protective effect of K13 was associated with the activation of the NF-ÎșB pathway and was deficient in its mutant, K13-58AAA, and a structural homolog, vFLIP E8, which lack NF-ÎșB activity. K13 upregulated the expression of NF-ÎșB subunit RelB and blocked the anti-IgM induced decline in c-Myc and rise in p27(Kip1) that have been associated with growth arrest and apoptosis. K13 also upregulated the expression of Mcl-1, an anti-apoptotic member of the Bcl2 family. Finally, K13 protected the mature B cell line Ramos against anti-IgM induced apoptosis through NF-ÎșB activation. Inhibition of anti-IgM induced apoptosis by K13 may contribute to the development of KSHV-associated lymphoproliferative disorders
Demystifying Governance and its Role for Transitions in Urban SocialâEcological Systems
Governance is key to sustainable urban transitions. Governance is a system of social, power, and decisionâmaking processes that acts as a key driver of resource allocation and use, yet ecologistsâeven urban ecologistsâseldom consider governance concepts in their work. Transitions to more sustainable futures are becoming increasingly important to the management of many ecosystems and landscapes, and particularly so for urban systems. We briefly identify and synthesize important governance dimensions of urban sustainability transitions, using illustrations from cities in which longâterm socialâecological governance research is underway. This article concludes with a call to ecologists who are interested in environmental stewardship, and to urban ecologists in particular, to consider the role of governance as a driver in the dynamics of the systems they study
