Statistical evaluation of control inputs and eye movements in the use of instruments clusters during aircraft landing
Two different types of analyses were done on data from a study in which eye movements and other variables were recorded while four pilots executed landing sequences in a Boeing 737 simulation. Various conditions were manupulated, including changes in turbulence, starting position, and instrumentation. Control inputs were analyzed in the context of the various conditions and compared against ratings of workload obtained using the Cooper-Harper scale. A number of eye-scanning measures including mean dwell time and transition from one instrument to another were entered into a principal components factor analysis. The results show a differentiation between control inputs and eye-scanning behavior. This shows the need for improved definition of workload and experiments to uncover the important differences among control inputs, eye-scanning and cognitive processes of the pilot
Promoting independent learning skills using video on digital language laboratories

It describes two pilot self-access programmes based on video clips which were undertaken with University College Chester undergraduates and reflects on the value of the experience for students in developing a wide range of language skills as well as independent learning skills using their feedback on the experience
Willingness to Pay for Improved Milk Sensory Characteristics and Assurances in Northern Kenya Using Experimental Auctions
Pastoralists in northern Kenya may be able to diversify income by selling milk in nearby towns and cities. However, milk sold in open-air markets in communities in northern Kenya is often of low quality in terms of its sensory characteristics. The milk is also often adulterated before sale. These markets are characterized by poor consumers who need to make choices about milk quality with virtually no information other than their own sensory perceptions. These conditions are similar in many parts of the world for many different commodities and products. An examination was undertaken using experimental auctions to determine if consumers in the border town of Moyale, Kenya are willing to pay for enhanced milk sensory characteristics and assurances. The results suggest that even poor consumers are willing to pay for enhanced sensory characteristics and assurances if these can be communicated in a trusted manner. Fermionic solution of the Andrews-Baxter-Forrester model II: proof of Melzer's polynomial identities
We compute the one-dimensional configuration sums of the ABF model using the
fermionic technique introduced in part I of this paper. Combined with the
results of Andrews, Baxter and Forrester, we find proof of polynomial
identities for finitizations of the Virasoro characters
as conjectured by Melzer. In the thermodynamic limit
these identities reproduce Rogers--Ramanujan type identities for the unitary
minimal Virasoro characters, conjectured by the Stony Brook group. We also
present a list of additional Virasoro character identities which follow from

Data calibration for the MASCARA and bRing instruments
Aims: MASCARA and bRing are photometric surveys designed to detect
variability caused by exoplanets in stars with . Such variability
signals are typically small and require an accurate calibration algorithm,
tailored to the survey, in order to be detected. This paper presents the
methods developed to calibrate the raw photometry of the MASCARA and bRing
stations and characterizes the performance of the methods and instruments.
Methods: For the primary calibration a modified version of the coarse
decorrelation algorithm is used, which corrects for the extinction due to the
earth's atmosphere, the camera transmission, and intrapixel variations.
Residual trends are removed from the light curves of individual stars using
empirical secondary calibration methods. In order to optimize these methods, as
well as characterize the performance of the instruments, transit signals were
injected in the data. Results: After optimal calibration an RMS scatter of 10
mmag at is achieved in the light curves. By injecting transit
signals with periods between one and five days in the MASCARA data obtained by
the La Palma station over the course of one year, we demonstrate that MASCARA
La Palma is able to recover 84.0, 60.5 and 20.7% of signals with depths of 2, 1
and 0.5% respectively, with a strong dependency on the observed declination,
recovering 65.4% of all transit signals at versus 35.8% at
. Using the full three years of data obtained by MASCARA La
Palma to date, similar recovery rates are extended to periods up to ten days.

Transcriptome analysis and systemic RNAi response in the African sweetpotato weevil (Cylas puncticollis, Coleoptera, Brentidae
<div><p>The African sweetpotato weevil (SPW) <i>Cylas puncticollis</i> Boheman is one of the most important constraints of sweetpotato production in Sub-Saharan Africa and yet is largely an uncharacterized insect pest. Here, we report on the transcriptome analysis of SPW generated using an Illumina platform. More than 213 million sequencing reads were obtained and assembled into 89,599 contigs. This assembly was followed by a gene ontology annotation. Subsequently, a transcriptome search showed that the necessary RNAi components relevant to the three major RNAi pathways, were found to be expressed in SPW. To address the functionality of the RNAi mechanism in this species, dsRNA was injected into second instar larvae targeting <i>laccase2</i>, a gene which encodes an enzyme involved in the sclerotization of insect exoskeleton. The body of treated insects showed inhibition of sclerotization, leading eventually to death. Quantitative Real Time PCR (qPCR) confirmed this phenotype to be the result of gene silencing. Together, our results provide valuable sequence data on this important insect pest and demonstrate that a functional RNAi pathway with a strong and systemic effect is present in SPW and can further be explored as a new strategy for controlling this important pest.</p></div
Protector and friend: Turning points and discursive constructions of the stepparent role
Objective: To understand turning points (TPs) in the development of positive stepparentâstepchild communication and relationships.
Background: Scholars stress the importance of communication in co-constructing healthy stepparentâstepchild relationships. The researchers focused on positive stepparenting via understanding transformational turning point (TP) events across time. Research questions explored how stepparents with an overall positive relationship with a stepchild characterize TPs and the discursive constructions of the stepparent role.
Method: The team analyzed 877 pages of data from 37 in-depth interviews with stepparents who described self-identified TP events, reflected in visual graphs of 279 TPs.
Results: Data were coded into 11 TP types, focused on structural and role changes for stepparents, co-constructed over time. The top three TP types were changes in household composition, communicating support through offering protection and being present/available, and role change, most frequently by functioning as a parent versus friend. All the TPs highlight discursive work to forge positive stepparenting roles.
Conclusions: The findings extend earlier studies of stepchildrenâs experiences and communication practices that ground resilience to manage relational resources through investments of quality time and enactment of social support. Implications: Applications suggest support for stepparents to have quality interactions with stepchildren and training to develop healthy communication practices and facilitate resilience
Bounds on second generation scalar leptoquarks from the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon
We calculate the contribution of second generation scalar leptoquarks to the
anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (AMMM). In the near future, E-821 at
Brookhaven will reduce the experimental error on this parameter to , an improvement of 20 over its current value.
With this new experimental limit we obtain a lower mass limit of
\ GeV for the second generation scalar leptoquark, when its
Yukawa-like coupling \ to quarks and leptons is taken to be

The Three Dimensional Structure of EUV Accretion Regions in AM Herculis Stars: Modeling of EUV Photometric and Spectroscopic Observations
We have developed a model of the high-energy accretion region for magnetic
cataclysmic variables and applied it to {\it Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer}
observations of 10 AM Herculis type systems. The major features of the EUV
light curves are well described by the model. The light curves exhibit a large
variety of features such as eclipses of the accretion region by the secondary
star and the accretion stream, and dips caused by material very close to the
accretion region. While all the observed features of the light curves are
highly dependent on viewing geometry, none of the light curves are consistent
with a flat, circular accretion spot whose lightcurve would vary solely from
projection effects. The accretion region immediately above the WD surface is a
source of EUV radiation caused by either a vertical extent to the accretion
spot, or Compton scattering off electrons in the accretion column, or, very
likely, both. Our model yields spot sizes averaging 0.06 R, or the WD surface area, and average spot heights of 0.023
R. Spectra extracted during broad dip phases are softer than spectra
during the out-of-dip phases. This spectral ratio measurement leads to the
conclusion that Compton scattering, some absorption by a warm absorber,
geometric effects, an asymmetric temperature structure in the accretion region
and an asymmetric density structure of the accretion columnare all important
components needed to fully explain the data. Spectra extracted at phases where
the accretion spot is hidden behind the limb of the WD, but with the accretion
column immediately above the spot still visible, show no evidence of emission
features characteristic of a hot plasma.Comment: 30 Pages, 11 Figure
