Recursive methods for a multi-dimensional risk process with common shocks

    Get PDF
In this paper, a multi-dimensional risk model with common shocks is studied. Using a simple probabilistic approach via observing the risk processes at claim instants, recursive integral formulas are developed for the survival probabilities as well as for a class of Gerber-Shiu expected discounted penalty functions that include the surplus levels at ruin. Under the assumption of exponential or mixed Erlang claims, the recursive integrals can be simplified to give recursive sums which are computationally more tractable. Numerical examples including an optimal capital allocation problem are also given towards the end. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.postprin

On a generalization of the risk model with Markovian claim arrivals

The class of risk models with Markovian arrival process (MAP) (see e.g., Neuts[15]) is generalized by allowing the waiting times between two successive events (which can be a change in the environmental state and/or a claim arrival) to have an arbitrary distribution. Using a probabilistic approach, we determine the solution for a class of Gerber-Shiu functions apart from some unknown constants when claim sizes have a mixed exponential distribution. Such constants are later determined using the more classic ruin-analytic approach. A numerical example is later considered to illustrate the tractability of the suggested methodology in the study of Gerber-Shiu functions. Copyright © 2011 Taylor &Francis Group, LLC.postprin

    Sun Tracking Systems: A Review

    Get PDF
The output power produced by high-concentration solar thermal and photovoltaic systems is directly related to the amount of solar energy acquired by the system, and it is therefore necessary to track the sun's position with a high degree of accuracy. Many systems have been proposed to facilitate this task over the past 20 years. Accordingly, this paper commences by providing a high level overview of the sun tracking system field and then describes some of the more significant proposals for closed-loop and open-loop types of sun tracking systems

Efficiency of closed loop geothermal heat pumps: A sensitivity analysis

Geothermal heat pumps are becoming more and more popular as the price of fossil fuels is increasing and a strong reduction of anthropogenic CO2 emissions is needed. The energy performances of these plants are closely related to the thermal and hydrogeological properties of the soil, but a proper design and installation also plays a crucial role. A set of flow and heat transport simulations has been run to evaluate the impact of different parameters on the operation of a GHSP. It is demonstrated that the BHE length is the most influential factor, that the heat carrier fluid also plays a fundamental role, and that further improvements can be obtained by using pipe spacers and highly conductive grouts. On the other hand, if the physical properties of the soil are not surveyed properly, they represent a strong factor of uncertainty when modelling the operation of these plants. The thermal conductivity of the soil has a prevailing importance and should be determined with in-situ tests (TRT), rather than assigning values from literature. When groundwater flow is present, the advection should also be considered, due to its positive effect on the performances of BHEs; by contrast, as little is currently known about thermal dispersion, relying on this transport mechanism can lead to an excessively optimistic desig
