    Geology, geochemistry and genesis of selected skarn deposits, Northern New Brunswick, Canada

    An exhaustive geological and geochemical study is presented of magnetite-chalcopyrite skarn deposits occurring within the thermal aureole of the Nicholas Denys quartz maonzonie-granodiorite stock. The deposits are crudely lenticular and occur in metamorphosed impure limestone and siliceous, in part limy, argillite-greywacke. These are now represented by andradite-epidote-diopside-calcite skarn and cal-silicate to horn-felsic rocks respectively. Both deposits are spatially related to the Main fault of the Rocky Brook-Millstream fault system; late, generally northwest trending transverse faults are conspicuous and are deemed of importance in ore localization --Abstract, page [ii]

    The cloning, genomic organization and tissue expression profile of the human DLG5 gene

    BACKGROUND: Familial atrial fibrillation, an autosomal dominant disease, was previously mapped to chromosome 10q22. One of the genes mapped to the 10q22 region is DLG5, a member of the MAGUKs (Membrane Associated Gyanylate Kinase) family which mediates intracellular signaling. Only a partial cDNA was available for DLG5. To exclude potential disease inducing mutations, it was necessary to obtain a complete cDNA and genomic sequence of the gene. METHODS: The Northern Blot analysis performed using 3' UTR of this gene indicated the transcript size to be about 7.2 KB. Using race technique and library screening the entire cDNA was cloned. This gene was evaluated by sequencing the coding region and splice functions in normal and affected family members with familial atrial fibrillation. Furthermore, haploid cell lines from affected patients were generated and analyzed for deletions that may have been missed by PCR. RESULTS: We identified two distinct alternately spliced transcripts of this gene. The genomic sequence of the DLG5 gene spanned 79 KB with 32 exons and was shown to have ubiquitous human tissue expression including placenta, heart, skeletal muscle, liver and pancreas.     Osmotic-stress-induced synthesis and degradation of inorganic polyphosphates in the alga phaeodactylum- tricornutum

    The potential role of inorganic polyphosphates in the response of algal cells to osmotic stress was investigated. We show that changes in polyphosphate metabolism of algae induced by osmotic stress can be easily determined by measuring the metachromatic shift of toluidine blue produced by polyphosphate and by analysing the size of the extracted polyphosphate on urea/polyacrylamide gels. The amount and size of polyphosphate were found to differ considerably among different algal species. It is demonstrated that the alga Phaeodactylum tricornutum responds to hyperosmotic stress with a marked elongation of polyphosphate molecules and a decrease in the total amount of extractable polyphosphate, while exposure to hypoosmotic stress results in an increase in soluble shorter-chain polyphosphates and a rise in total polyphosphate content

    Breathing Life Into Biomechanical User Models

    Forward biomechanical simulation in HCI holds great promise as a tool for evaluation, design, and engineering of user interfaces. Although reinforcement learning (RL) has been used to simulate biomechanics in interaction, prior work has relied on unrealistic assumptions about the control problem involved, which limits the plausibility of emerging policies. These assumptions include direct torque actuation as opposed to muscle-based control; direct, privileged access to the external environment, instead of imperfect sensory observations; and lack of interaction with physical input devices. In this paper, we present a new approach for learning muscle-actuated control policies based on perceptual feedback in interaction tasks with physical input devices. This allows modelling of more realistic interaction tasks with cognitively plausible visuomotor control. We show that our simulated user model successfully learns a variety of tasks representing different interaction methods, and that the model exhibits characteristic movement regularities observed in studies of pointing. We provide an open-source implementation which can be extended with further biomechanical models, perception models, and interactive environments.publishedVersio

    Humane Education: The Tool for Scientific Revolution in Brazil

    Despite the predominance of traditional teacher-centered approaches, educators are constantly changing paradigms and social boundaries, by stimulating criticism with active learning based approaches, which are centered on contexts and experiences. Viewing students as individuals enables paradigm changes and inspires new perspectives on established theories and facts. This chapter discusses education in Brazil, with a focus on humane education. Humane education strives to foster compassion and respect for humans, nonhuman animals (hereinafter referred to as animals), and the environment by creating awareness of the needs of others and the effects of our actions. In this chapter we describe the process of humane education in the context of animals used for teaching. We explore the possibilities of replacing animals and including ethical discussions in the curriculum; the history of Brazilian humane education, considering the Environmental Crimes Act that forbids animal use when alternative methods exist; and the legislation that controls the use of animals for research and teaching purposes in Brazil

    Global analysis of aberrant pre-mRNA splicing in glioblastoma using exon expression arrays

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Tumor-predominant splice isoforms were identified during comparative <it>in silico </it>sequence analysis of EST clones, suggesting that global aberrant alternative pre-mRNA splicing may be an epigenetic phenomenon in cancer. We used an exon expression array to perform an objective, genome-wide survey of glioma-specific splicing in 24 GBM and 12 nontumor brain samples. Validation studies were performed using RT-PCR on glioma cell lines, patient tumor and nontumor brain samples.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In total, we confirmed 14 genes with glioma-specific splicing; seven were novel events identified by the exon expression array (<it>A2BP1, BCAS1, CACNA1G, CLTA, KCNC2, SNCB</it>, and <it>TPD52L2</it>). Our data indicate that large changes (> 5-fold) in alternative splicing are infrequent in gliomagenesis (< 3% of interrogated RefSeq entries). The lack of splicing changes may derive from the small number of splicing factors observed to be aberrantly expressed.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>While we observed some tumor-specific alternative splicing, the number of genes showing exclusive tumor-specific isoforms was on the order of tens, rather than the hundreds suggested previously by <it>in silico </it>mining. Given the important role of alternative splicing in neural differentiation, there may be selective pressure to maintain a majority of splicing events in order to retain glial-like characteristics of the tumor cells.</p

    The intrusion prevention in computing environments is a recurring concern for network administrators. This article presents an automation solution for IIDS (Intelligent Intrusion Detection System), or proposes the transformation of an IIDS in a IIDPS (Intelligent Intrusion Detection Prevention System). The IIDPS besides to detect and report the existence of an attack, it acts proactively to prevent the attack. To actualize this transformation has developed a function that performs the integration of the IISD and the iptables firewall. This function receives as parameter the detection performed by the IISD and then executes a firewall Resumo. A prevenção de intrusões em ambientes computacionais é uma recorrente preocupação dos administradores de redes. Este artigo apresenta uma solução de automatização para IIDS (Sistema de Identificação de Intrusão Inteligente), ou seja, propõe a transformação de um IIDS em um IIDPS (Sistema de Detecção e Prevenção de Intrusão Inteligente). O IIDPS além de detectar e notificar a existência de um ataque, ele age de forma proativa na prevenção do ataque. Para possibilitar esta transformação foi desenvolvida uma função que realiza a integração entre o IIDS e o firewall IPTables. Esta função recebe como parâmetro a detecção realizada pelo IIDS e posteriormente executa um comando de firewall.
