    The Use of MotusBASEBALL For Pitch Monitoring and Injury Prevention

    Introduction: MotusBASEBALL (MOTUS) has proven to be a reliable and accurate method for evaluating the multifactorial kinesiology involved with pitching. We sought to review the use of MOTUS in assessment of pitching parameters and identify its practicality as an injury prevention tool across the literature. Methods: A systemic review of the literature was preformed, using key words such as MOTUS, baseball, pitcher, sensor and arm sleeve, identifying 77 total articles. Inclusion criteria entailed original articles that used MOTUS and studied baseball pitchers across any level of sport. Results: A total of 13 articles met the inclusion criteria, producing a sample of 493 male athletes with a mean age of 18.7. Uniformly across studies, elbow torque was a primary metric and was observed in relation to a wide range of variables, such as pitch type, height, weight and arm length. Additionally, MOTUS was able to detect several other pitching metrics, such as arm speed, shoulder rotation and arm slot, displaying a wide range of capabilities. Conclusion: We suspect MOTUS technology could become a significant tool for observing pitching mechanics in real time, as well as an injury prevention tool to be used by players, coaches and trainers across all levels of baseball

    Pforams@microtax: Anew online taxonomic database for planktonic foraminifera

    A new relational taxonomic database for planktonic foraminifera (“pforams@mikrotax�) has been constructed and is now freely available online at http://www.mikrotax.org. It represents amajor advance from its predecessor, the CHRONOS online taxonomic database, which has served the research community since 2005. The benefits of the new database to the research and industrial biostratigraphic communities are many, as it will serve as an immediately accessible taxonomic guide and reference for specialists and non-specialists alike by providing access to a wealth of information and images from original authors and from expertswho have inserted recent authoritative updates to planktonic foraminiferal taxonomy, phylogeny and biostratigraphy. The database will be continually updated and used as a guide for training current and future generations of students and professionals who will be able to self-educate on planktonic foraminiferal taxonomy and biostratigraphy. Further investigation of species traditionally included in the Cretaceous genera Heterohelix, Globigerinelloides, Marginotruncana, and Globotruncana is required to exclude the use of polyphyletic morphotaxa. The taxonomy for Paleogene planktonic foraminifera is quite stable following publication of the Paleocene, Eocene, and Oligocene taxonomic atlases, but revisions to the taxonomy and phylogeny of Neogene taxa are needed to incorporate results from genetic sequencing studies and recent biostratigraphic observations

    Determination of density and concentration from fluorescent images of a gas flow

    A fluorescent image analysis procedure to determine the distribution of species concentration and density in a gas flow is proposed. The fluorescent emission is due to the excitation of atoms/molecules of a gas that is intercepted by an electron blade. The intensity of the fluorescent light is proportional to the local number density of the gas. When the gas flow is a mixture of different species, this proportionality can be exploited to extract the contribution associated to the species from the spectral superposition acquired by a digital camera. This yields a method that simultaneously reveals species concentrations and mass density of the mixture. The procedure is applied to two under-expanded sonic jets discharged into a different gas ambient - Helium into Argon and Argon into Helium - to measure the concentration and density distribution along the jet axis and across it. A comparison with experimental and numerical results obtained by other authors when observing under-expanded jets at different Mach numbers is made with the density distribution along the axis of the jet.     Local-flexural interactive buckling of standard and optimised cold-formed steel columns

    This paper aims to study the interaction of local and overall flexural buckling in cold-formed steel (CFS) channels under axial compression. Detailed nonlinear FE models were developed and validated against a total of 36 axial compression tests on CFS plain and lipped channel columns with pin-ended boundary conditions. The numerical models incorporated the non-linear stress-strain behaviour of CFS material and enhanced properties of cold-worked corner regions obtained from coupon tests. The effects of initial geometric imperfections of the specimens measured by a specially designed set-up with laser displacement transducers were also taken into account. The developed FE models produced excellent predictions of the ultimate strength of the specimens obtained from experimental tests. The validated FE models and experimental results were then used to assess the adequacy of the effective width method in Eurocode 3 (EC3) and Direct Strength Method (DSM) in estimating the design capacity of a wide range of conventional and optimised design CFS channel column sections. The results indicate that Eurocode 3 provides conservative predictions (on average 21% deviation) for the compressive capacity of plain and lipped channel sections, while in general DSM predictions are more accurate for lipped channels. A comparison between FE predictions and tested results show that geometric imperfections can change the FE predictions by up to 20% and 40%, respectively, for lipped and plain channel columns, while the strain hardening effect at the rounded corner regions of the cross-sections is negligible. The results also confirmed that the proposed numerical model is able to provide a consistent and reliable prediction on the efficiency of a previously proposed optimisation methodology

    BAC-Based Sequencing of Behaviorally-Relevant Genes in the Prairie Vole

    The prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) is an important model organism for the study of social behavior, yet our ability to correlate genes and behavior in this species has been limited due to a lack of genetic and genomic resources. Here we report the BAC-based targeted sequencing of behaviorally-relevant genes and flanking regions in the prairie vole. A total of 6.4 Mb of non-redundant or haplotype-specific sequence assemblies were generated that span the partial or complete sequence of 21 behaviorally-relevant genes as well as an additional 55 flanking genes. Estimates of nucleotide diversity from 13 loci based on alignments of 1.7 Mb of haplotype-specific assemblies revealed an average pair-wise heterozygosity (8.4×10−3). Comparative analyses of the prairie vole proteins encoded by the behaviorally-relevant genes identified >100 substitutions specific to the prairie vole lineage. Finally, our sequencing data indicate that a duplication of the prairie vole AVPR1A locus likely originated from a recent segmental duplication spanning a minimum of 105 kb. In summary, the results of our study provide the genomic resources necessary for the molecular and genetic characterization of a high-priority set of candidate genes for regulating social behavior in the prairie vole

    Radioactive 26Al and massive stars in the Galaxy

    Gamma-rays from radioactive 26Al (half life ~7.2 10^5 yr) provide a 'snapshot' view of ongoing nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy. The Galaxy is relatively transparent to such gamma-rays, and emission has been found concentrated along the plane of the Galaxy. This led to the conclusion1 that massive stars throughout the Galaxy dominate the production of 26Al. On the other hand, meteoritic data show locally-produced 26Al, perhaps from spallation reactions in the protosolar disk. Furthermore, prominent gamma-ray emission from the Cygnus region suggests that a substantial fraction of Galactic 26Al could originate in localized star-forming regions. Here we report high spectral resolution measurements of 26Al emission at 1808.65 keV, which demonstrate that the 26Al source regions corotate with the Galaxy, supporting its Galaxy-wide origin. We determine a present-day equilibrium mass of 2.8 (+/-0.8) M_sol of 26Al.     An experimental investigation of properties of Q345 steel pipe at elevated temperatures

    This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental investigation of the thermal and mechanical properties of Q345 steel pipe at elevated temperatures using both the steady-state and transient-state test methods. Under these two test conditions, the thermal expansion coefficient, yield strength and elastic modulus of the specimens at different temperatures were measured. The tested results indicate that both the yield strength and elastic modulus decrease gradually with increasing temperature. However, at the same temperature, both the yield strength and elastic modulus tested using the steady-state test are higher than those tested using the transient-state test. Hence, it is less safe to use the material properties tested using the steady-state test for fire resistance design of the steel structure. Based on the transient-state test results, the models of the mechanical properties of Q345 steel pipe at elevated temperatures were proposed.
