Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and parenting: a scoping review
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men rarely rate a mention within discussions of parenting unless framed in the negative, or as the cause of dysfunctional family life. Consequently, the roles and responsibilities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men within parenting have largely been neglected or ignored. This scoping review aimed to identify and describe Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parenting programs that focused on male parents. A comprehensive search was conducted of databases, PubMed and Informit ATSI health, to identify peer-review publications, while relevant websites were also searched for grey literature. The review identified eight programs that met the inclusion criteria. The review highlights the lack of rigorously researched and published literature on parenting programs that focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander male parents. The programs all reported positive outcomes and demonstrate that given the opportunity, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander male parents are ready and determined to fulfil their roles and responsibilities as parents to the best of their ability for the benefit of their families and communities. The provision of inclusive parenting programs and services will equip Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander male parents to better support their families during these important times.Kootsy Canuto, Stephen G. Detection of aggrecanase- and MMP-generated catabolic neoepitopes in the rat iodoacetate model of cartilage degeneration
AbstractObjectiveTo characterize the time course of aggrecan and type II collagen degradation in the rat iodoacetate model of cartilage degeneration in relationship to the temporal sequence that has been described in human osteoarthritis (OA).DesignRats were injected intra-articularly in one knee joint with iodoacetate and damage to the tibial plateau was assessed from digitized images captured using an image analyzer. The articular cartilage from the tibial plateau was harvested, extracted and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content was measured using the dimethylmethylene blue (DMMB) assay. Cartilage aggrecan neoepitopes were detected in cartilage extracts by Western blotting using antibodies recognizing the aggrecanase-generated C-terminal neoepitope NITEGE (BC-13) and the MMP-generated C-terminal neoepitope DIPEN (BC-4). A type II collagen collagenase-generated neoepitope was detected in cartilage extracts by ELISA using the Col2-3/4Cshort antibody; denatured collagen was detected using the Col2-3/4m antibody.ResultsDegenerative joint changes and proteoglycan (GAG) loss progressed with time after iodoacetate injection. Western blotting of cartilage extracts of iodoacetate treated rats demonstrated an increase in both aggrecanase- and MMP-generated epitopes with the NITEGE aggrecanase neoepitope being significantly elevated on days 7, 14 and 21 while DIPEN the MMP neoepitope was significantly elevated on days 7 and 14. The type II collagen neoepitope recognized by Col2-3/4Cshort was significantly increased in cartilage extracts of rats at days 14 and 21 after iodoacetate injection.ConclusionThe proteoglycan fragments extracted from the knee cartilage of rats after the intra-articular injection of iodoacetate appeared to result from cleavage at both aggrecanase and MMP sites. Cleavage of type II collagen by collagenase was also detected after iodoacetate injection and occurred subsequent to the initiation of aggrecan loss. These observations serve to demonstrate similarities in the mechanisms of cartilage degeneration induced by iodoacetate to those seen in articular cartilage in OA
Acoustic Measurements of Rectangular Nozzles with Bevel
A series of convergent rectangular nozzles of aspect ratios 2:1, 4:1, and 8:1 were constructed with uniform exit velocity profiles. Additional nozzles were constructed that extended the wide lip on one side of these nozzles to form beveled nozzles. Far-field acoustic measurements were made and analyzed, and the results presented. The impact of aspect ratio on jet noise was similar to that of enhanced mixing devices: reduction in aft, peak frequency noise with an increase in broadside, high frequency noise. Azimuthally, it was found that rectangular jets produced more noise directed away from their wide sides than from their narrow sides. The azimuthal dependence decreased at aft angles where noise decreased. The effect of temperature, keeping acoustic Mach number constant, was minimal. Since most installations would have the observer on the wide size of the nozzle, the increased high frequency noise has a deleterious impact on the observer. Extending one wide side of the rectangular nozzle, evocative of an aft deck in an installed propulsion system, increased the noise of the jet with increasing length. The impact of both aspect ratio and bevel length were relatively well behaved, allowing a simple bilinear model to be constructed relative to a simple round jet
The phase diagram of quantum systems: Heisenberg antiferromagnets
A novel approach for studying phase transitions in systems with quantum
degrees of freedom is discussed. Starting from the microscopic hamiltonian of a
quantum model, we first derive a set of exact differential equations for the
free energy and the correlation functions describing the effects of
fluctuations on the thermodynamics of the system. These equations reproduce the
full renormalization group structure in the neighborhood of a critical point
keeping, at the same time, full information on the non universal properties of
the model. As a concrete application we investigate the phase diagram of a
Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a staggered external magnetic field. At long
wavelengths the known relationship to the Quantum Non Linear Sigma Model
naturally emerges from our approach. By representing the two point function in
an approximate analytical form, we obtain a closed partial differential
equation which is then solved numerically. The results in three dimensions are
in good agreement with available Quantum Monte Carlo simulations and series
expansions. More refined approximations to the general framework presented here
and few applications to other models are briefly discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
Edge effects in a frustrated Josephson junction array with modulated couplings
A square array of Josephson junctions with modulated strength in a magnetic
field with half a flux quantum per plaquette is studied by analytic arguments
and dynamical simulations. The modulation is such that alternate columns of
junctions are of different strength to the rest. Previous work has shown that
this system undergoes an XY followed by an Ising-like vortex lattice
disordering transition at a lower temperature. We argue that resistance
measurements are a possible probe of the vortex lattice disordering transition
as the linear resistance with
at intermediate temperatures due to dissipation at the array
edges for a particular geometry and vanishes for other geometries. Extensive
dynamical simulations are performed which support the qualitative physical

Thermodynamics of Large-N_f QCD at Finite Chemical Potential
We extend the previously obtained results for the thermodynamic potential of
hot QCD in the limit of large number of fermions to non-vanishing chemical
potential. We give exact results for the thermal pressure in the entire range
of temperature and chemical potential for which the presence of a Landau pole
is negligible numerically. In addition we compute linear and non-linear quark
susceptibilities at zero chemical potential, and the entropy at small
temperatures. We compare with the available perturbative results and determine
their range of applicability. Our numerical accuracy is sufficiently high to
check and verify existing results, including the recent perturbative results by
Vuorinen on quark number susceptibilities and the older results by Freedman and
McLerran on the pressure at zero temperature and high chemical potential. We
also obtain a number of perturbative coefficients at sixth order in the
coupling that have not yet been calculated analytically. In the case of both
non-zero temperature and non-zero chemical potential, we investigate the range
of validity of a scaling behaviour noticed recently in lattice calculations by
Fodor, Katz, and Szabo at moderately large chemical potential and find that it
breaks down rather abruptly at , which points to a
presumably generic obstruction for extrapolating data from small to large
chemical potential. At sufficiently small temperatures , we find
dominating non-Fermi-liquid contributions to the interaction part of the
entropy, which exhibits strong nonlinearity in the temperature and an excess

Confirmation of a pi_1^0 Exotic Meson in the \eta \pi^0 System
The exclusive reaction , at 18 GeV has been studied with a partial wave analysis on a sample
of 23~492 events from BNL experiment E852. A mass-dependent fit
is consistent with a resonant hypothesis for the wave, thus providing
evidence for a neutral exotic meson with , a mass of MeV, and a width of MeV. New
interpretations of the meson exotics in neutral system observed in
E852 and Crystal Barrel experiments are discussed.Comment: p3, rewording the paragraph (at the bottom) about the phase
variations. p4, rewording paragrath "The second method ..." . p4, at the
bottom of paragrath "The third method ..." added consistent with the results
of methods 1 and 2
Exotic Meson Production in the System observed in the Reaction at 18 GeV/c
This letter reports results from the partial wave analysis of the
final state in collisions at 18GeV/c.
Strong evidence is observed for production of two mesons with exotic quantum
numbers of spin, parity and charge conjugation, in the decay
channel . The mass MeV/c^2 and
width MeV/c^2 of the first state are consistent
with the parameters of the previously observed . The second
resonance with mass MeV/c^2 and width MeV/c^2 agrees very well with predictions from theoretical
models. In addition, the presence of is confirmed with mass MeV/c^2 and width MeV/c^2
and a new state, , is observed with mass
MeV/c^2 and width MeV/c^2. The decay properties of
these last two states are consistent with flux tube model predictions for
hybrid mesons with non-exotic quantum numbers
Experiencing the world with archetypal symbols: A new form of aesthetics.
According to the theories of symbolic interactionism, phenomenology of perception and archetypes, we argue that symbols play the key role in translating the information from the physical world to the human experience, and archetypes are the universal knowledge of cognition that generates the background of human experience (the life-world). Therefore, we propose a conceptual framework that depicts how people experience the world with symbols, and how archetypes relate the deepest level of human experience. This framework indicates a new direction of research on memory and emotion, and also suggests that archetypal symbolism can be a new resource of aesthetic experience design.Postprint (published version
