    Pedagogy First, Technology Second: teaching & learning information literacy online

    This paper explores the pedagogical and technical issues, challenges and outcomes of creating an online information literacy course. Currently under development, this course will be offered as a parallel study option to Advanced Information Retrieval Skills (AIRS:IFN001 ) for QUT postgraduate students, a compulsory face-to-face course for all QUT research students. The aim of this project is to optimise students’ access to AIRS:IFN001 and meet the University’s objectives regarding flexible delivery and online teaching. Still in its developmental stages, AIRS::Online extends beyond the current notion of static online information literacy tutorials by providing a facilitated, student focussed learning environment comprising content and learning experiences enhanced by appropriate multimedia technology and resources which engage students in planned facilitated and/or self-paced learning events. Course assessment is formative and summative, and is comprised of a research log and reflective journal to provide a means for reviewing the content and key process of advanced information searching and retrieval

    Validating Geologic Storage Potential in the Midwestern USA through Multiple Field Demonstrations

    AbstractThe Midwestern Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (MRCSP) is implementing an integrated effort to validate the geologic storage potential in the Midwestern states within the USA through multiple field demonstrations. Validation of the geologic storage potential in this area requires regional geologic exploration along with site-specific demonstrations of CO2 injection and monitoring. These demonstrations are being conducted in collaboration with energy companies in Appalachian Basin, Michigan Basin, and Cincinnati Arch geologic regions. Each field test incorporates extensive characterization, reservoir modeling, permitting, outreach, injection and monitoring in a deep saline reservoir setting. The progress that has been achieved during the past year, including the evaluation of injection at two test sites, is presented

    The Landscape of Reason: A Scheme for Representing Arguments Concerning Environmental, Health and Safety Effects of Chemical Weapons Disposal in the US

    To reduce the risk of environmental contamination and honor an international treaty, chemical weapons stored at eight locales around the US are slated for destruction. Incineration is the main choice of a National Research Council committee directed by Congress to weigh the hazards of alternative destruction technologies, but many citizens\u27 groups remain unconvinced. The US Army, which must dispose of the dangerous chemicals, faces decisions about the choice of destruction technologies, as well as more specific questions concerning protection of environment, safety and public health once the technology choices are made. Based on more than 200 individual interviews and 40 focus groups held in communities near where the weapons are stored, this paper illustrates an argumentation scheme for representing the underlying reasons for varying positions in the conflict over technology choices. The argumentation scheme is effective in representing qualitative interview data concerning the complex and dynamic environmental perspectives of diverse regional and national constituencies

    Geologic storage field tests in multiple basins in Midwestern USA–Lessons learned and implications for commercial deployment

    AbstractDuring the last three years, geologic storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in saline formations has been demonstrated in three distinct geologic settings by the Midwestern Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (MRCSP), one of the seven regional partnerships funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. MRCSP (www.mrcsp.org) covers a large region across nine Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic states, with several geologic provinces including: The Michigan and Appalachian Basins, the Cincinnati Arch Province, and the coastal sedimentary layers. Given the long history of coal production, much of the region is heavily dependent on coal-fired plants for electricity, and, therefore, subject to significant economic impact from carbon-emission constraints. The sedimentary formations or geologic structures across the region provide diverse options to mitigate the emissions through geologic storage of CO2.The validation for the storage potential comes through field assessments of injectivity and containment at three locations: One each in the Appalachian and Michigan Basins and one in the uplifted Cincinnati Arch region. All three field projects were conducted in a series of steps that contribute towards development of best practices for carbon capture and storage (CCS) validation that are applicable to the MRCSP region and elsewhere. Although specific practices are highly site dependent, the general steps include initial regional geologic assessment, site characterization through seismic surveys and drilling of test wells, permitting, outreach, development of a CO2 supply system, injection and monitoring operations, and post-injection monitoring and site closure.Collectively, the regional mapping and three field demonstrations provide significant insight into geologic storage feasibility over a range of rock types and properties. Two of the tested sites indicate injection and storage rates exceeding 1000 tonnes/day/well. Such rates suggest that commercial-scale applications should be possible with a reasonable number of wells. The regional mapping of these zones also indicates that the tested layers are likely to be continuous over a large area, and, therefore, have potential for large-scale, long-term injection operations required for the numerous CO2 sources in the region

    Proteomic analysis of the Plasmodium male gamete reveals the key role for glycolysis in flagellar motility.

    BACKGROUND: Gametogenesis and fertilization play crucial roles in malaria transmission. While male gametes are thought to be amongst the simplest eukaryotic cells and are proven targets of transmission blocking immunity, little is known about their molecular organization. For example, the pathway of energy metabolism that power motility, a feature that facilitates gamete encounter and fertilization, is unknown. METHODS: Plasmodium berghei microgametes were purified and analysed by whole-cell proteomic analysis for the first time. Data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD001163. RESULTS: 615 proteins were recovered, they included all male gamete proteins described thus far. Amongst them were the 11 enzymes of the glycolytic pathway. The hexose transporter was localized to the gamete plasma membrane and it was shown that microgamete motility can be suppressed effectively by inhibitors of this transporter and of the glycolytic pathway. CONCLUSIONS: This study describes the first whole-cell proteomic analysis of the malaria male gamete. It identifies glycolysis as the likely exclusive source of energy for flagellar beat, and provides new insights in original features of Plasmodium flagellar organization

    Does managed care make a difference? Physicians' length of stay decisions under managed and non-managed care

    BACKGROUND: In this study we examined the influence of type of insurance and the influence of managed care in particular, on the length of stay decisions physicians make and on variation in medical practice. METHODS: We studied lengths of stay for comparable patients who are insured under managed or non-managed care plans. Seven Diagnosis Related Groups were chosen, two medical (COPD and CHF), one surgical (hip replacement) and four obstetrical (hysterectomy with and without complications and Cesarean section with and without complications). The 1999, 2000 and 2001 – data from hospitals in New York State were used and analyzed with multilevel analysis. RESULTS: Average length of stay does not differ between managed and non-managed care patients. Less variation was found for managed care patients. In both groups, the variation was smaller for DRGs that are easy to standardize than for other DRGs. CONCLUSION: Type of insurance does not affect length of stay. An explanation might be that hospitals have a general policy concerning length of stay, independent of the type of insurance of the patient

    A randomised controlled trial of a digital intervention (Renewed) to support symptom management, wellbeing and quality of life in cancer survivors

    Background: Many cancer survivors following primary treatment have prolonged poor quality of life.Aim: To determine the effectiveness of a bespoke digital intervention to support cancer survivors.Design: Pragmatic parallel open randomised trial.Setting: UK general practices.Methods: People having finished primary treatment (&lt;= 10 years previously) for colo-rectal, breast or prostate cancers, with European-Organization-for-Research-and-Treatment-of-Cancer QLQ-C30 score &lt;85, were randomised by online software to: 1) detailed ‘generic’ digital NHS support (‘LiveWell’;n=906), 2) a bespoke complex digital intervention (‘Renewed’;n=903) addressing symptom management, physical activity, diet, weight loss, distress, or 3) ‘Renewed-with-support’ (n=903): ‘Renewed’ with additional brief email and telephone support. Results: Mixed linear regression provided estimates of the differences between each intervention group and generic advice: at 6 months (primary time point: n’s respectively 806;749;705) all groups improved, with no significant between-group differences for EORTC QLQ-C30, but global health improved more in both intervention groups. By 12 months there were: small improvements in EORTC QLQ-C30 for Renewed-with-support (versus generic advice: 1.42, 95% CIs 0.33-2.51); both groups improved global health (12 months: renewed: 3.06, 1.39-4.74; renewed-with-support: 2.78, 1.08-4.48), dyspnoea, constipation, and enablement, and lower NHS costs (generic advice £265: in comparison respectively £141 (153-128) and £77 (90-65) lower); and for Renewed-with-support improvement in several other symptom subscales. No harms were identified.Conclusion: Cancer survivors quality of life improved with detailed generic online support. Robustly developed bespoke digital support provides limited additional short term benefit, but additional longer term improvement in global healthenablement and symptom management, with substantially lower NHS costs.<br/

    Early development of infants with neurofibromatosis type 1: a case series

    Background Prospective studies of infants at familial risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have yielded insights into the earliest signs of the disorder but represent heterogeneous samples of unclear aetiology. Complementing this approach by studying cohorts of infants with monogenic syndromes associated with high rates of ASD offers the opportunity to elucidate the factors that lead to ASD. Methods We present the first report from a prospective study of ten 10-month-old infants with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), a monogenic disorder with high prevalence of ASD or ASD symptomatology. We compared data from infants with NF1 to a large cohort of infants at familial risk for ASD, separated by outcome at age 3 of ASD (n = 34), atypical development (n = 44), or typical development (n = 89), and low-risk controls (n = 75). Domains assessed at 10 months by parent report and examiner observation include cognitive and adaptive function, sensory processing, social engagement, and temperament. Results Infants with NF1 showed striking impairments in motor functioning relative to low-risk infants; this pattern was seen in infants with later ASD from the familial cohort (HR-ASD). Both infants with NF1 and the HR-ASD group showed communication delays relative to low-risk infants. Conclusions Ten-month-old infants with NF1 show a range of developmental difficulties that were particularly striking in motor and communication domains. As with HR-ASD infants, social skills at this age were not notably impaired. This is some of the first information on early neurodevelopment in NF1. Strong inferences are limited by the sample size, but the findings suggest implications for early comparative developmental science and highlight motor functioning as an important domain to inform the development of relevant animal models. The findings have clinical implications in indicating an important focus for early surveillance and remediation in this early diagnosed genetic disorder
