    Generalizing the DGLAP Evolution of Fragmentation Functions to the Smallest x Values

    An approach which unifies the Double Logarithmic Approximation at small x and the leading order DGLAP evolution of fragmentation functions at large x is presented. This approach reproduces exactly the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation, but is more complete due to the degrees of freedom given to the quark sector and the inclusion of the fixed order terms. We find that data from the largest x values to the peak region can be better fitted than with other approaches.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Next-to-leading-order predictions for D^{*+-} plus jet photoproduction at DESY HERA

    We study the photoproduction of a D^{*+-} meson in association with a hadron jet at next-to-leading order in the parton model of QCD with non-perturbative fragmentation functions extracted from LEP1 data of e^+e^- annihilation. The transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions recently measured at DESY HERA in various kinematic ranges nicely agree with our theoretical predictions. This provides a useful test of the universality and the scaling violations of the fragmentation functions predicted by the factorization theorem. These comparisons also illustrate the significance of the charm component in the resolved photon. This is elaborated by investigating the cross-section distributions in x_obs^gamma and cos(theta^*).Comment: 20 pages, 10 figure

    Tyrphostin AG 1024 modulates radiosensitivity in human breast cancer cells

    Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) plays an important growth-promoting effect by activating the PI3K/Akt signalling pathway, inhibiting apoptotic pathways and mediating mitogenic actions. Tyrphostin AG 1024, one selective inhibitor of IGF-1R, was used to evaluate effects on proliferation, radiosensitivity, and radiation-induced cell apoptosis in a human breast cancer cell line MCF-7. Exposure to Tyrphostin AG 1024 inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis in a time-dependent manner, and the degree of growth inhibition for IC20 plus irradiation (4 Gy) was up to 50% compared to the control. Examination of Tyrphostin AG 1024 effects on radiation response demonstrated a marked enhancement in radiosensitivity and amplification of radiation-induced apoptosis. Western blot analysis indicated that Tyrphostin AG 1024-induced apoptosis was associated with a downregulation of expression of phospho-Akt1, increased expression of Bax, p53 and p21, and a decreased expression of bcl-2 expression, especially when combined with irradiation. To our knowledge, this is the first report showing that an IGF-1 inhibitor was able to markedly increase the response of tumour cells to ionizing radiation.     Commissioning of an ultra-high dose rate pulsed electron beam medical LINAC for FLASH RT preclinical animal experiments and future clinical human protocols.

    To present the acceptance and the commissioning, to define the reference dose, and to prepare the reference data for a quality assessment (QA) program of an ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) electron device in order to validate it for preclinical animal FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH RT) experiments and for FLASH RT clinical human protocols. The Mobetron <sup>®</sup> device was evaluated with electron beams of 9 MeV in conventional (CONV) mode and of 6 and 9 MeV in UHDR mode (nominal energy). The acceptance was performed according to the acceptance protocol of the company. The commissioning consisted of determining the short- and long-term stability of the device, the measurement of percent depth dose curves (PDDs) and profiles at two different positions (with two different dose per pulse regimen) and for different collimator sizes, and the evaluation of the variability of these parameters when changing the pulse width and pulse repetition frequency. Measurements were performed using a redundant and validated dosimetric strategy with alanine and radiochromic films, as well as Advanced Markus ionization chamber for some measurements. The acceptance tests were all within the tolerances of the company's acceptance protocol. The linearity with pulse width was within 1.5% in all cases. The pulse repetition frequency did not affect the delivered dose more than 2% in all cases but 90 Hz, for which the larger difference was 3.8%. The reference dosimetry showed a good agreement within the alanine and films with variations of 2.2% or less. The short-term (resp. long-term) stability was less than 1.0% (resp. 1.8%) and was the same in both CONV and UHDR modes. PDDs, profiles, and reference dosimetry were measured at two positions, providing data for two specific dose rates (about 9 Gy/pulse and 3 Gy/pulse). Maximal beam size was 4 and 6 cm at 90% isodose in the two positions tested. There was no difference between CONV and UHDR mode in the beam characteristics tested. The device is commissioned for FLASH RT preclinical biological experiments as well as FLASH RT clinical human protocols

    Oxidation State and Structure of Fe in Nontronite: From Oxidizing to Reducing Conditions.

    The redox reaction between natural Fe-containing clay minerals and its sorbates is a fundamental process controlling the cycles of many elements such as carbon, nutrients, redox-sensitive metals, and metalloids (e.g., Co, Mn, As, Se), and inorganic as well as organic pollutants in Earth's critical zone. While the structure of natural clay minerals under oxic conditions is well-known, less is known about their behavior under anoxic and reducing conditions, thereby impeding a full understanding of the mechanisms of clay-driven reduction and oxidation (redox) reactions especially under reducing conditions. Here we investigate the structure of a ferruginous natural clay smectite, nontronite, under different redox conditions, and compare several methods for the determination of iron redox states. Iron in nontronite was gradually reduced chemically with the citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite (CBD) method. 57Fe Mössbauer spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy including its pre-edge, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, and mediated electrochemical oxidation and reduction (MEO/MER) provided consistent Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratios. By combining X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we show that the long-range structure of nontronite at the highest obtained reduction degree of 44% Fe(II) is not different from that of fully oxidized nontronite except for a slight basal plane dissolution on the external surfaces. The short-range order probed by EXAFS spectroscopy suggests, however, an increasing structural disorder and Fe clustering with increasing reduction of structural Fe

    Measures Matter: Scales for Adaptation, Cultural Distance, and Acculturation Orientation Revisited

    Building upon existing measures, four new brief acculturation scales are presented, measuring sociocultural adaptation, psychological adaptation, perceived cultural distance, and acculturation orientation. Following good scale reliability in initial samples, the English scales were translated into nine different languages (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai, and Turkish). The translated scales were administered to a large sample of sojourners (N = 1,929), demonstrating good reliability and adequate structural equivalence across languages. In line with existing theory, sociocultural adaptation and psychological adaptation were positively correlated, and showed a negative association with perceived cultural distance. General measures of well-being were correlated with adaptation and distance, with better adaptation relating to higher well-being, and more distance relating to lower well-being. Acculturation orientation toward the home and host culture were measured separately and a weak negative correlation was found between the two, supporting their independence. Arguing against dichotomization, these subscales were analyzed as continuous variables. Regression analysis showed sojourners to be better adapted, if they were oriented more toward the host culture and less toward the home culture.     Prompt photons at RHIC

    We calculate the inclusive cross section for prompt photon production in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC energies (s=130\sqrt{s}=130 GeV and s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV) in the central rapidity region including next-to-leading order, O(αemαs2)O(\alpha_{em}\alpha_s^2), radiative corrections, initial state nuclear shadowing and parton energy loss effects. We show that there is a significant suppression of the nuclear cross section, up to 30\sim 30% at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV, due to shadowing and medium induced parton energy loss effects.     Thermal Photons in Strong Interactions

    A brief survey is given on the current status of evaluating thermal production of photons from a strongly interacting medium. Emphasis is put on recent progress in assessing equilibrium emission rates in both hadronic and quark-gluon matter. We also give an update on the status of comparing theoretical calculations with experimental data from heavy-ion collisions at the SPS, as well as prospects for RHIC. Finally, applications of photon rate calculations to colorsuperconducting quark matter are discussed.Comment: Brief Review for Mod. Phys.
