    Manifolds of magnetic ordered states and excitations in the almost Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet MgCr2O4

    In spinels ACr2O4 (A=Mg, Zn), realization of the classical pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet model is complicated by a strong spin-lattice coupling: the extensive degeneracy of the ground state is lifted by a magneto-structural transition at TN = 12.5 K. We study the resulting low-temperature low-symmetry crystal structure by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The consistent features of x-ray low-temperature patterns are explained by the tetragonal model of Ehrenberg et al. [Pow. Diff. 17, 230 (2002)], while other features depend on sample or cooling protocol. A complex, partially ordered magnetic state is studied by neutron diffraction and spherical neutron polarimetry. Multiple magnetic domains of configuration arms of the propagation vectors k1 = (1/2 1/2 0), k2 = (1 0 1/2 ) appear. The ordered moment reaches 1.94(3) μB/Cr3+ for k1 and 2.08(3) μB/Cr3+ for k2, if equal amount of the k1 and k2 phases is assumed. The magnetic arrangements have the dominant components along the [110] and [1−10] diagonals and a smaller c component.We use inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the spin excitations, which comprise a mixture of dispersive spin waves propagating from the magnetic Bragg peaks and resonance modes centered at equal energy steps of 4.5 meV.We interpret these as acoustic and optical spin wave branches, but show that the neutron scattering cross sections of transitions within a unit of two corner-sharing tetrahedra match the observed intensity distribution of the resonances. The distinctive fingerprint of clusterlike excitations in the optical spin wave branches suggests that propagating excitations are localized by the complex crystal structure and magnetic orders

    Cognitive impairment induced by delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol occurs through heteromers between cannabinoid CB1 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors

    Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive compound of marijuana, induces numerous undesirable effects, including memory impairments, anxiety, and dependence. Conversely, THC also has potentially therapeutic effects, including analgesia, muscle relaxation, and neuroprotection. However, the mechanisms that dissociate these responses are still not known. Using mice lacking the serotonin receptor 5-HT2A, we revealed that the analgesic and amnesic effects of THC are independent of each other: while amnesia induced by THC disappears in the mutant mice, THC can still promote analgesia in these animals. In subsequent molecular studies, we showed that in specific brain regions involved in memory formation, the receptors for THC and the 5-HT2A receptors work together by physically interacting with each other. Experimentally interfering with this interaction prevented the memory deficits induced by THC, but not its analgesic properties. Our results highlight a novel mechanism by which the beneficial analgesic properties of THC can be dissociated from its cognitive side effects

    The Italian multiple sclerosis register

    The past decade has seen extraordinary increase in worldwide availability of and access to several large multiple sclerosis (MS) databases and registries. MS registries represent powerful tools to provide meaningful information on the burden, natural history, and long-term safety and effectiveness of treatments. Moreover, patients, physicians, industry, and policy makers have an active interest in real-world observational studies based on register data, as they have the potential to answer the questions that are most relevant to daily treatment decision-making. In 2014, the Italian MS Foundation, in collaboration with the Italian MS clinical centers, promoted and funded the creation of the Italian MS Register, a project in continuity with the existing Italian MS Database Network set up from 2001. Main objective of the Italian MS Register is to create an organized multicenter structure to collect data of all MS patients for better defining the disease epidemiology, improving quality of care, and promoting research projects in high-priority areas. The aim of this article is to present the current framework and network of the Italian MS register, including the methodology used to improve the quality of data collection and to facilitate the exchange of data and the collaboration among national and international groups

    A produção de conhecimento sobre juventude(s), vulnerabilidades e violências: uma análise da pós-graduação brasileira nas áreas de Psicologia e Saúde (1998-2008)

    Estudiosos de diferentes campos do saber têm alertado para aspectos recorrentes e problemáticos da produção de conhecimento em relação ao jovem e suas condições sociais. As pesquisas apontam que, ao tratar do tema, estes estudos o fazem quase sempre a partir dos "problemas" que a juventude apresenta, desconsiderando a compreensão dos modos de vida e das experiências cotidianas que a atravessam. O objetivo deste artigo é refletir sobre como as pesquisas acadêmicas brasileiras têm pensado o jovem na atualidade, num diálogo com outros estados da arte já realizados acerca deste tema. Optamos por levantar teses de doutorado e dissertações de mestrado em duas áreas de conhecimento - Psicologia e Saúde - no período de 1998 a 2008. Apresentamos, inicialmente, as razões de tal escolha e os procedimentos adotados para este levantamento; em seguida, expomos algumas características do contexto de produção dos textos analisados e de suas tematizações mais gerais, prosseguindo com a discussão mais específica daqueles que focalizam as violências e vulnerabilidades. Este levantamento revelou alguns dos embates e/ou forças políticas que se conectam e se materializam na produção de um sujeito jovem no contemporâneo, ora fixando-o em uma categoria conceitual, ora objetivando-o a partir dos territórios de vulnerabilizações e violências que os envolvem. Assumir outros modos de pensar as juventudes, acompanhando suas derivações, seus processos de desterritorialização/territorizalização contribui para identificarmos diferentes lógicas, produzir novos conhecimentos, refletir sobre distintas estratégias de ação que dialoguem com as experiências e singularidades deste jovem

    Simulating the influence of the South Atlantic dipole on the South Atlantic convergence zone during neutral ENSO

    The South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) is an intrinsic characteristic of the South American Summer Monsoon. In a recent study, we verified that the main mode of coupled variability over the South Atlantic (South Atlantic Dipole (SAD)) plays a role in modulating the position of extratropical cyclones that affect the SACZ precipitation. In this study, we perform numerical experiments to further investigate the mechanisms between SAD and the SACZ. Numerical experiments forced with prescribed SST anomalies showed that, even though the Atlantic SST affects the position of the cyclone associated with the SACZ, the atmospheric response and precipitation patterns over land are opposed to the observations. On the other hand, experiments forced with prescribed anomalous driving fields showed that the atmospheric component of SAD plays a significant role for the right position and intensity of precipitation associated with the SACZ. SAD negative anomalies provide the low-level and upper-level atmospheric support for the intensification of the cyclone at surface and for the increase in precipitation over the land portion of the SACZ. Therefore, the numerical experiments suggest that, during El Niño Southern Oscillation neutral conditions, the SACZ precipitation variability associated with SAD is largely dependent on the atmospheric variability rather than the underlying SST
