TECHNOLOGY FOR ORGANIC WEED CONTROL
In recent years, crop maintenance works have become a major challenge for organic farming systems, where the application of chemical treatments is totally forbidden. The effect of weeds on crops varies according to pedoclimatic, biological or technological parameters, the resulting damages being both quantitative and qualitative. By weed control, we aim to prevent their competition in order to obtain maximum crop yields.Among the methods of thermal weed control, used as an alternative to chemical weeding, steam or hot water-based ones have been increasingly used as they provide an efficient, environmentally friendly and economical way of removing harmful plants. This paper presents a technology for the maintenance of medicinal and aromatic plant organic crops, based on the use of innovative equipment for weed thermal control by using hot water

Microsystem Technology for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL)
AbstractAAL is certainly an application area with sensor as well as actuator needs. Some of the requirements can be fulfilled by state of the art technology; some areas however still need a lot of R&D efforts for potential applications in homes. The contribution describes two areas of interest and actual development: One is the topic of robust fire detection; the other domain is fall detection. For both application areas one has to understand both the state of the art and the drawbacks of the current solutions. One can state clearly that there is a huge potential for the development of new microsystems. Still one has to keep in mind that usage in elderly homes also requires consent and cooperation of the users which is the focus of the user centered design principle
The Empirical Foundations of Telemedicine Interventions for Chronic Disease Management
The telemedicine intervention in chronic disease management promises to involve patients in their own care, provides continuous monitoring by their healthcare providers, identifies early symptoms, and responds promptly to exacerbations in their illnesses. This review set out to establish the evidence from the available literature on the impact of telemedicine for the management of three chronic diseases: congestive heart failure, stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. By design, the review focuses on a limited set of representative chronic diseases because of their current and increasing importance relative to their prevalence, associated morbidity, mortality, and cost. Furthermore, these three diseases are amenable to timely interventions and secondary prevention through telemonitoring. The preponderance of evidence from studies using rigorous research methods points to beneficial results from telemonitoring in its various manifestations, albeit with a few exceptions. Generally, the benefits include reductions in use of service: hospital admissions/re-admissions, length of hospital stay, and emergency department visits typically declined. It is important that there often were reductions in mortality. Few studies reported neutral or mixed findings.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/140284/1/tmj.2014.9981.pd
Tratamentul chirurgical al Hiperplaziei Prostatice Benigne (HPB)
Summary
The work is dedicated to comparative analysis of results of surgery treatment in patients with
Benign Prostate Hyperplasia. The 543 patients with untreated prostate adenoma (exposed toadenoma removal - 415 patients, and transurethral resection - 128 patients). The analysis of the results
demonstrated, that the rate and the character of intra- and post- operation complications depends
considerably on rational choice of surgical intervenfion method (transvesical or transurethral) and
quality of its realization. In present TUR remains the main method in the treatment of BPH, possessing
many advantages and at the same time presenting many possibilities of simultaneous treatment of
other diseases, which accompany BPH. Transvesical adenomaectomy remains a method of BPH
treatment, having more narrow concrete indications: adenoma of great size and its combination
with great or multiple urinary bladder stones
Systematic review of mass media interventions designed to improve public recognition of stroke symptoms, emergency response and early treatment

Abstract

Background

Mass media interventions have been implemented to improve emergency response to stroke given the emergence of effective acute treatments, but their impact is unclear.

Methods

Systematic review of mass media interventions aimed at improving emergency response to stroke, with narrative synthesis and review of intervention development.

Results

Ten studies were included (six targeted the public, four both public and professionals) published between 1992 and 2010. Only three were controlled before and after studies, and only one had reported how the intervention was developed. Campaigns aimed only at the public reported significant increase in awareness of symptoms/signs, but little impact on awareness of need for emergency response. Of the two controlled before and after studies, one reported no impact on those over 65 years, the age group at increased risk of stroke and most likely to witness a stroke, and the other found a significant increase in awareness of two or more warning signs of stroke in the same group post-intervention. One campaign targeted at public and professionals did not reduce time to presentation at hospital to within two hours, but increased and sustained thrombolysis rates. This suggests the campaign had a primary impact on professionals and improved the way that services for stroke were organised.

Conclusions

Campaigns aimed at the public may raise awareness of symptoms/signs of stroke, but have limited impact on behaviour. Campaigns aimed at both public and professionals may have more impact on professionals than the public. New campaigns should follow the principles of good design and be robustly evaluated.</p
The role of emergency neurology in Italy: outcome of a consensus meeting for a intersociety position
A possible definition of clinical, educational and organizing aspects of emergency neurology in Italy is reported in this position paper of Emergency Neurology Intersociety Group, created in 2008 among the two neurological Societies in Italy: Società Italiana di Neurologia and Società di Neuroscienze Ospedaliere. The aim of this Group has been the evaluation of the role of neurologist in the emergency setting of Italian hospitals, as well as of the description of different scenarios in which a ward dedicated to a semi-intensive care of neurological emergencies could have a role in the actual organization of academic or general hospitals in our Country. The actual great relevance of neurologist activity in the inpatients treatment, in fact, is actually misleaded as it is the considerable significance of neurological expertise, techniques and support in hospital care pathways also involving neurological manifestations throughout the course of other diseases. Finally, the possible contents of educational programs orienting neurological specialty towards a better comprehension and management of emergency neurological problems either in terms of specific formation or of techniques to be learned by emergency neurologist, are reported as a results of the Consensus Workshop hold in Castiglioncello (LI) in September 12th, 2009
