Segregation and charge-density-wave order in the spinless Falicov-Kimball model
The spinless Falicov-Kimball model is solved exactly in the limit of
infinite-dimensions on both the hypercubic and Bethe lattices. The competition
between segregation, which is present for large U, and charge-density-wave
order, which is prevalent at moderate U, is examined in detail. We find a rich
phase diagram which displays both of these phases. The model also shows
nonanalytic behavior in the charge-density-wave transition temperature when U
is large enough to generate a correlation-induced gap in the single-particle
density of states.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
Ferromagnetic transition in a double-exchange system
We study ferromagnetic transition in three-dimensional double-exchange model.
The influence of strong spin fluctuations on conduction electrons is described
in coherent potential approximation. In the framework of thermodynamic approach
we construct for the system "electrons (in a disordered spin configuration) +
spins" the Landau functional, from the analysis of which critical temperature
of ferromagnetic transition is calculated.Comment: 4 pages, 1 eps figure, LaTeX2e, RevTeX. References added, text

An Origin of CMR: Competing Phases and Disorder-Induced Insulator-to-Metal Transition in Manganites
We theoretically explore the mechanism of the colossal magnetoresistance in
manganese oxides by explicitly taking into account the phase competition
between the double-exchange ferromagnetism and the charge-ordered insulator. We
find that quenched disorder causes a drastic change of the multicritical phase
diagram by destroying the charge-ordered state selectively. As a result, there
appears a nontrivial phenomenon of the disorder-induced insulator-to-metal
transition in the multicritical regime. On the contrary, the disorder induces a
highly-insulating state above the transition temperature where charge-ordering
fluctuations are much enhanced. The contrasting effects provide an
understanding of the mechanism of the colossal magnetoresistance. The obtained
scenario is discussed in comparison with other theoretical proposals such as
the polaron theory, the Anderson localization, the multicritical-fluctuation
scenario, and the percolation scenario.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Wandlitz Days on Magnetism:

Thermodynamic studies of the two dimensional Falicov-Kimball model on a triangular lattice
Thermodynamic properties of the spinless Falicov-Kimball model are studied on
a triangular lattice using numerical diagonalization technique with Monte-Carlo
simulation algorithm. Discontinuous metal-insulator transition is observed at
finite temperature. Unlike the case of square lattice, here we observe that the
finite temperature effect is not able to smear out the discontinuous
metal-insulator transition seen in the ground state. Calculation of specific
heat (C_v) shows single and double peak structures for different values of
parameters like on-site correlation strength (U), f-electron energy (E_f) and
temperature.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
