Nearby Young, Active, Late-type Dwarfs in Gaia's First Data Release
The Galex Nearby Young Star Survey (GALNYSS) has yielded a sample of
2000 UV-selected objects that are candidate nearby (150 pc), young (age 10--100 Myr), late-type stars.
Here, we evaluate the distances and ages of the subsample of (19) GALNYSS stars
with Gaia Data Release 1 (DR1) parallax distances pc. The overall
youth of these 19 mid-K to early-M stars is readily apparent from their
positions relative to the loci of main sequence stars and giants in Gaia-based
color-magnitude and color-color diagrams constructed for all Galex- and
WISE-detected stars with parallax measurements included in DR1. The isochronal
ages of all 19 stars lie in the range 10--100 Myr. Comparison with
Li-based age estimates indicates a handful of these stars may be young
main-sequence binaries rather than pre-main sequence stars. Nine of the 19
objects have not previously been considered as nearby, young stars, and all but
one of these are found at declinations north of 30. The Gaia DR1
results presented here indicate that the GALNYSS sample includes several
hundred nearby, young stars, a substantial fraction of which have not been

Propulsion simulator for magnetically-suspended wind tunnel models
The objective of phase two of a current investigation sponsored by NASA Langley Research Center is to demonstrate the measurement of aerodynamic forces/moments, including the effects of exhaust gases, in magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS) wind tunnels. Two propulsion simulator models are being developed: a small-scale and a large-scale unit, both employing compressed, liquified carbon dioxide as propellant. The small-scale unit was designed, fabricated, and statically-tested at Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI). The large-scale simulator is currently in the preliminary design stage. The small-scale simulator design/development is presented, and the data from its static firing on a thrust stand are discussed. The analysis of this data provides important information for the design of the large-scale unit. A description of the preliminary design of the device is also presented
The Multiple Young Stellar Objects of HBC 515: An X-ray and Millimeter-wave Imaging Study in (Pre-main Sequence) Diversity
We present Chandra X-ray Observatory and Submillimeter Array (SMA) imaging of
HBC 515, a system consisting of multiple young stellar objects (YSOs). The five
members of HBC 515 represent a remarkably diverse array of YSOs, ranging from
the low-mass Class I/II protostar HBC 515B, through Class II and transition
disk objects (HBC 515D and C, respectively), to the "diskless", intermediate-
mass, pre-main sequence binary HBC 515A. Our Chandra/ACIS imaging establishes
that all five components are X-ray sources, with HBC 515A - a
subarcsecond-separation binary that is partially resolved by Chandra - being
the dominant X-ray source. We detect an X-ray flare associated with HBC 515B.
In the SMA imaging, HBC 515B is detected as a strong 1.3 mm continuum emission
source; a second, weaker mm continuum source is coincident with the position of
the transition disk object HBC 515C. These results strongly support the
protostellar nature of HBC 515B, and firmly establish HBC 515A as a member of
the rare class of relatively massive, X-ray luminous "weak-lined T Tauri stars"
that are binaries and have shed their disks at very early stages of pre-MS
evolution. The coexistence of two such disparate objects within a single,
presumably coeval multiple YSO system highlights the influence of pre- MS star
mass, binarity, and X-ray luminosity in regulating the lifetimes of
circumstellar, planet-forming disks and the timescales of star-disk

Delivering Disability Accommodations at a Community College: A Case Study
This case study explores the Office of Disability Support Services (DSS) at Northern Midwestern Community College (NMCC). Like many state institutions of higher education, NMCC has undergone continued budgetary cuts, some of which have impacted their services. Additionally, NMCC faces limited support from administration and resistance from instructors to provide accommodations. Taking the position of the accommodations coordinator, this case study challenges readers to consider a student concern from an institutional, collaborative, student response, and strategic perspective
Molecules in the transition disk orbiting T Cha
We seek to establish the presence and properties of gas in the circumstellar
disk orbiting T Cha, a nearby (d~110 pc), relatively evolved (age ~5-7 Myr) yet
actively accreting 1.5 Msun T Tauri star. We used the APEX 12 m radiotelescope
to search for submillimeter molecular emission from the T Cha disk, and we
reanalyzed archival XMM-Newton spectroscopy of T Cha to ascertain the
intervening absorption due to disk gas along the line of sight to the star
(N_H). We detected submillimeter rotational transitions of 12CO, 13CO, HCN, CN
and HCO+ from the T Cha disk. The 12CO line appears to display a double-peaked
line profile indicative of Keplerian rotation. Analysis of the CO emission line
data indicates that the disk around T Cha has a mass (M_disk,H_2 = 80 M_earth)
similar to, but more compact (R_disk, CO~80 AU) than, other nearby, evolved
molecular disks (e.g. V4046 Sgr, TW Hya, MP Mus) in which cold molecular gas
has been previously detected. The HCO+/13CO and HCN/13CO, line ratios measured
for T Cha appear similar to those of other evolved circumstellar disks (i.e. TW
Hya and V4046 Sgr), while the CN/13CO ratio appears somewhat weaker. Analysis
of the XMM-Newton data shows that the atomic absorption toward T Cha is
1-2 orders of magnitude larger than toward the other nearby T Tauri with
evolved disks. Furthermore, the ratio between atomic absorption and optical
extinction N_H/A_V toward T Cha is higher than the typical value observed for
the interstellar medium and young stellar objects in the Orion Nebula Cluster.
This may suggest that the fraction of metals in the disk gas is higher than in
the interstellar medium. Our results confirm that pre-main sequence stars older
than ~5 Myr, when accreting, retain cold molecular disks, and that those
relatively evolved disks display similar physical and chemical properties.Comment: Accepted for publication on A&
Gavestinel does not improve outcome after acute intracerebral hemorrhage: an analysis from the GAIN International and GAIN Americas studies
<p><b>Background and Purpose:</b> Glycine Antagonist in Neuroprotection (GAIN) International and GAIN Americas trials were prospectively designed, randomized, placebo-controlled trials of gavestinel, a glycine-site antagonist and putative neuroprotectant drug administered within 6 hours of suspected ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. Both trials reported that gavestinel was ineffective in ischemic stroke. This analysis reports the results in those with primary intracerebral hemorrhage.</p>
<p><b>Methods:</b> The primary hypothesis was that gavestinel treatment did not alter outcome, measured at 3 months by the Barthel Index (BI), from acute intracerebral hemorrhage, based on pooled results from both trials. The BI scores were divided into 3 groups: 95 to 100 (independent), 60 to 90 (assisted independence), and 0 to 55 (dependent) or dead.</p>
<p><b>Results:</b> In total, 3450 patients were randomized in GAIN International (N=1804) and GAIN Americas (N=1646). Of these, 571 were ultimately identified to have spontaneous intracerebral hematoma on baseline head computerized tomography scan. The difference in distribution of trichotomized BI scores at 3 months between gavestinel and placebo was not statistically significant (P=0.09). Serious adverse events were reported at similar rates in the 2 treatment groups.</p>
<p><b>Conclusions:</b> These observations from the combined GAIN International and GAIN Americas trials suggest that gavestinel is not of substantial benefit or harm to patients with primary intracerebral hemorrhage. These findings are similar to results previously reported in patients with ischemic stroke.</p>
The Cochrane Case: An Epistemic Analysis on Decision-Making and Trust in Science in the Age of Information
none4noIn this study we analyze a recent controversy within the biomedical world, concerning the evaluation of safety of certain vaccines. This specific struggle took place among experts: the Danish epidemiologist Peter Gøtzsche on one side and a respected scientific institution, the Cochrane, on the other. However, given its relevance, the consequences of such a conflict invest a much larger spectrum of actors, last but not least the public itself. Our work is aimed at dissecting a specific aspect happening in this complex scenario: strategy. In other words, we want to highlight the value and the impact of strategic decisions when complex issues, as those analyzed, are at stake. In order to address this we have decided to adopt a game-theoretic approach. Our work will be structured as it follows. First, we will introduce the controversy and the two main actors: Peter Gøtzsche and the Cochrane. Second, we will explain why this controversy is important and its value beyond its academic relevance. Third, we will frame the controversy as a game and will provide several models representing different situations, also furnishing an analysis of these distinct scenarios.
