Interaction-induced current-reversals in driven lattices
We demonstrate that long-range interactions can cause, as time evolves,
consecutive reversals of directed currents for dilute ensembles of particles in
driven lattices. These current-reversals are based on a general mechanism which
leads to an interaction-induced accumulation of particles in the regular
regions of the underlying single-particle phase space and to a synchronized
single-particle motion as well as an enhanced efficiency of Hamiltonian

[Resumen] El estudio sÃsmico de la Laguna Chungará (69° 30' O, 18° 15'S, 4520 m. s.n.m,
Altiplano chileno septentrional) y el análisis sedimentológico de varios sondeos ha permitido reconstruir la evolución de la sedimentación lacustre en el lago durante el Holoceno Superior. Se han identificado dos asociaciones de facies: i) litoral, más somera, compuesta por facies de turbera y in plataforma lacustre, más profunda, compuesta por facies con abundantes fragmentos de Characeae. Estas facies alternan en tres ciclos sedimentarios provocados por fluctuaciones en el nivel del lago. Estas variaciones hidrológicas en la laguna han sido causadas por cambios en el balance hÃdrico que a su vez reflejan importantes fluctuaciones
climáticas durante el Holoceno Superior.[Abstract] We reconstruct the Late Holocene sedimentary history of Laguna Chungará (69° 30' W, 18° 10'5, 4520 m.a.s.l., northern Chilean Altiplano) based on high resolution seismic profiling and sedimentologic analyses of cores. Two sedimentary facies associations have been defined and interpreted: n macrophytedominant littoral, composed of black muds with macrophyte remains and peaty muds, and in Characeae-dominant lacustrine self, composed of gray muds and sands with abundant Characeae remains. The two facies associations define three cycles caused by oscillations in the lake level from shallower (macrophyte) to deeper (Characeae) conditions. Changes in the hydrology of Laguna Chungará reflect variations in the effective moisture (precipitation - evaporation) in the Altiplano during the Late Holocene
Pathways between childhood victimization and psychosis-like symptoms in the ALSPAC Birth Cohort
Background: Several large population-based studies have demonstrated associations between adverse childhood experiences and later development of psychotic symptoms. However, little attention has been paid to the mechanisms involved in this pathway and the few existing studies have relied on cross-sectional assessments. Methods: Prospective data on 6692 children from the UK Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) were used to address this issue. Mothers reported on children’s exposure to harsh parenting and domestic violence in early childhood, and children self-reported on bullying victimization prior to 8.5 years. Presence of children’s anxiety at 10 years and their depressive symptoms at 9 and 11 years were ascertained from mothers, and children completed assessments of self-esteem and locus of control at 8.5 years. Children were interviewed regarding psychotic symptoms at a mean age of 12.9 years. Multiple mediation analysis was performed to examine direct and indirect effects of each childhood adversity on psychotic symptoms. Results: The association between harsh parenting and psychotic symptoms was fully mediated by anxiety, depressive symptoms, external locus of control, and low self-esteem. Bullying victimization and exposure to domestic violence had their associations with psychotic symptoms partially mediated by anxiety, depression, locus of control, and self-esteem. Similar results were obtained following adjustment for a range of confounders and when analyses were conducted for boys and girls separately. Conclusions: These findings tentatively suggest that specific cognitive and affective difficulties in childhood could be targeted to minimize the likelihood of adolescents exposed to early trauma from developing psychotic symptoms
High performance liquid chromatography electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS-MS) for the quantification of L-kynurenine and indole-3-acetic acid in grape must by isotope dilution assay
Isotope dilution assay was used for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of L-kynurenine and indole-3-acetic acid in grape must. After solid phase extraction, highest selectivity and sensitivity was achieved by high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS-MS) using selected reaction monitoring (SRM). In the 24 samples under study, the amounts of L-kynurenine and indole-3-acetic acid ranged from 0 to 94 mu g.l-1 and from 20 to 380 mu g.l-1, respectively. These compounds are considered as potential precursors of 2-aminoacetophenone, causing the ''untypical aging off-flavour'' in Vitis vinifera white wines

Atmospheric parameters in a subtropical cloud regime transition derived by AIRS and MODIS: observed statistical variability compared to ERA-Interim
Cloud occurrence, microphysical and optical properties, and atmospheric
profiles within a subtropical cloud regime transition in the northeastern
Pacific Ocean are obtained from a synergistic combination of the Atmospheric
Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and the MODerate resolution Imaging
Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The observed cloud parameters and atmospheric
thermodynamic profile retrievals are binned by cloud type and analyzed based
on their probability density functions (PDFs). Comparison of the PDFs to
data from the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting
reanalysis (ERA-Interim) shows a strong difference in the occurrence of the
different cloud types compared to clear sky. An increasing non-Gaussian
behavior is observed in cloud optical thickness (τ<sub>c</sub>), effective
radius (<i>r</i><sub>e</sub>) and cloud-top temperature (<i>T</i><sub>c</sub>) distributions from
stratocumulus to trade cumulus, while decreasing values of lower-tropospheric stability are seen. However, variations in the mean, width and
shape of the distributions are found. The AIRS potential temperature
(θ) and water vapor (<i>q</i>) profiles in the presence of varying marine
boundary layer (MBL) cloud types show overall similarities to the
ERA-Interim in the mean profiles, but differences arise in the higher
moments at some altitudes. The differences between the PDFs from
AIRS+MODIS and ERA-Interim make it possible to pinpoint systematic errors
in both systems and help to understand joint PDFs of cloud properties and
coincident thermodynamic profiles from satellite observations

Moderate inappropriately high aldosterone/NaCl constellation in mice: cardiovascular effects and the role of cardiovascular epidermal growth factor receptor
Non-physiological activation of the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR), e.g. by aldosterone under conditions of high salt intake, contributes to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases, although beneficial effects of aldosterone also have been described. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) contributes to cardiovascular alterations and mediates part of the MR effects. Recently, we showed that EGFR is required for physiological homeostasis and function of heart and arteries in adult animals. We hypothesize that moderate high aldosterone/NaCl, at normal blood pressure, affects the cardiovascular system depending on cardiovascular EGFR. Therefore we performed an experimental series in male and female animals each, using a recently established mouse model with EGFR knockout in vascular smooth muscle cells and cardiomyocytes and determined the effects of a mild-high aldosterone-to-NaCl constellation on a.o. marker gene expression, heart size, systolic blood pressure, impulse conduction and heart rate. Our data show that (i) cardiac tissue of male but not of female mice is sensitive to mild aldosterone/NaCl treatment, (ii) EGFR knockout induces stronger cardiac disturbances in male as compared to female animals and (iii) mild aldosterone/NaCl treatment requires the EGFR in order to disturb cardiac tissue homeostasis whereas beneficial effects of aldosterone seem to be independent of EGFR
Proxima Centauri b: A Strong Case for Including Cosmic-Ray-induced Chemistry in Atmospheric Biosignature Studies
Due to its Earth-like minimum mass of 1.27 M-E and its close proximity to our solar system, Proxima Centauri b is one of the most interesting exoplanets for habitability studies. Its host star, Proxima Centauri, is however a strongly flaring star, which is expected to provide a very hostile environment for potentially habitable planets. We perform a habitability study of Proxima Centauri b assuming an Earth-like atmosphere under high stellar particle bombardment, with a focus on spectral transmission features. We employ our extensive model suite calculating energy spectra of stellar particles, their journey through the planetary magnetosphere, ionosphere, and atmosphere, ultimately providing planetary climate and spectral characteristics, as outlined in Herbst et al. Our results suggest that together with the incident stellar energy flux, high particle influxes can lead to efficient heating of the planet well into temperate climates, by limiting CH4 amounts, which would otherwise run into antigreenhouse for such planets around M stars. We identify some key spectral features relevant for future spectral observations: First, NO2 becomes the major absorber in the visible, which greatly impacts the Rayleigh slope. Second, H2O features can be masked by CH4 (near-infrared) and CO2 (mid- to far-infrared), making them nondetectable in transmission. Third, O-3 is destroyed and instead HNO3 features become clearly visible in the mid- to far-infrared. Lastly, assuming a few percent of CO2 in the atmosphere, CO2 absorption at 5.3 mu m becomes significant (for flare and nonflare cases), strongly overlapping with a flare related NO feature in Earth\u27s atmosphere
