    Entropy-based parametric estimation of spike train statistics

    We consider the evolution of a network of neurons, focusing on the asymptotic behavior of spikes dynamics instead of membrane potential dynamics. The spike response is not sought as a deterministic response in this context, but as a conditional probability : "Reading out the code" consists of inferring such a probability. This probability is computed from empirical raster plots, by using the framework of thermodynamic formalism in ergodic theory. This gives us a parametric statistical model where the probability has the form of a Gibbs distribution. In this respect, this approach generalizes the seminal and profound work of Schneidman and collaborators. A minimal presentation of the formalism is reviewed here, while a general algorithmic estimation method is proposed yielding fast convergent implementations. It is also made explicit how several spike observables (entropy, rate, synchronizations, correlations) are given in closed-form from the parametric estimation. This paradigm does not only allow us to estimate the spike statistics, given a design choice, but also to compare different models, thus answering comparative questions about the neural code such as : "are correlations (or time synchrony or a given set of spike patterns, ..) significant with respect to rate coding only ?"     Dissipative Dynamics of Collisionless Nonlinear Alfven Wave Trains

    The nonlinear dynamics of collisionless Alfven trains, including resonant particle effects is studied using the kinetic nonlinear Schroedinger (KNLS) equation model. Numerical solutions of the KNLS reveal the dynamics of Alfven waves to be sensitive to the sense of polarization as well as the angle of propagation with respect to the ambient magnetic field. The combined effects of both wave nonlinearity and Landau damping result in the evolutionary formation of stationaryOA S- and arc-polarized directional and rotational discontinuities.     Convective Fingering of an Autocatalytic Reaction Front

    We report experimental observations of the convection-driven fingering instability of an iodate-arsenous acid chemical reaction front. The front propagated upward in a vertical slab; the thickness of the slab was varied to control the degree of instability. We observed the onset and subsequent nonlinear evolution of the fingers, which were made visible by a {\it p}H indicator. We measured the spacing of the fingers during their initial stages and compared this to the wavelength of the fastest growing linear mode predicted by the stability analysis of Huang {\it et. al.} [{\it Phys. Rev. E}, {\bf 48}, 4378 (1993), and unpublished]. We find agreement with the thickness dependence predicted by the theory.Comment: 11 pages, RevTex with 3 eps figures.     Modification of the eikonal relation for chemical waves to include fluid flow

    Propagating wave fronts resulting from autocatalytic chemical reactions have been the focus of much recent research. For the most part, the hydrodynamics resulting from such reactions has been neglected. In this work, a relation is derived for the normal speed of a propagating wave front as a function of the local curvature when fluid motion is allowed. This ‘‘eikonal’’ equation is a generalization of one which was derived in the absence of fluid flow. It is also shown that small variations in the fluid density due to the chemical reaction do not change the form of the relation

    Back-engineering of spiking neural networks parameters

    We consider the deterministic evolution of a time-discretized spiking network of neurons with connection weights having delays, modeled as a discretized neural network of the generalized integrate and fire (gIF) type. The purpose is to study a class of algorithmic methods allowing to calculate the proper parameters to reproduce exactly a given spike train generated by an hidden (unknown) neural network. This standard problem is known as NP-hard when delays are to be calculated. We propose here a reformulation, now expressed as a Linear-Programming (LP) problem, thus allowing to provide an efficient resolution. This allows us to "back-engineer" a neural network, i.e. to find out, given a set of initial conditions, which parameters (i.e., connection weights in this case), allow to simulate the network spike dynamics. More precisely we make explicit the fact that the back-engineering of a spike train, is a Linear (L) problem if the membrane potentials are observed and a LP problem if only spike times are observed, with a gIF model. Numerical robustness is discussed. We also explain how it is the use of a generalized IF neuron model instead of a leaky IF model that allows us to derive this algorithm. Furthermore, we point out how the L or LP adjustment mechanism is local to each unit and has the same structure as an "Hebbian" rule. A step further, this paradigm is easily generalizable to the design of input-output spike train transformations. This means that we have a practical method to "program" a spiking network, i.e. find a set of parameters allowing us to exactly reproduce the network output, given an input.     Survey of Pest Management Practices on Washington Dairy Farms

    Washington state dairy producers were surveyed to determine pest and parasite prevalence and range of current pest management strategies. Nearly all respondents reported treating their cattle or premises for flies, while 62% reported treating their animals for external parasites. Use of pyrethroid and pyrethrins insecticides was common throughout the state. Results indicated that use of non-chemical options to control flies are commonly used by Washington dairy producers and may have become more widespread since the late 1990s. Extension professionals could improve outreach education to dairies by partnering with farm supply stores, veterinarians, and feed distributors

    Twisted topological structures related to M-branes

    Studying the M-branes leads us naturally to new structures that we call Membrane-, Membrane^c-, String^K(Z,3)- and Fivebrane^K(Z,4)-structures, which we show can also have twisted counterparts.     Mini-DSAEK for Macro Corneal Perforations

    PURPOSE: We present a technique that preserves good vision in paracentral macroperforations and avoids challenges of tectonic lamellar or penetrating keratoplasty in eyes with poor visual potential. METHOD: A wet laboratory was implemented for mini-Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty to seal macroperforations ab interno. This included a suture support technique designed to prevent graft herniation. We also present 3 cases who were treated successfully with this technique. RESULTS: The laboratory test confirmed that mini-Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty can successfully seal macroperforations without the need of large incisions. The minidisc is introduced through the perforation, and a double mattress suture prevents graft herniation. The technique allowed us to preserve 20/15 unaided vision in a case with paracentral macroperforation. It also restored eye globe integrity and achieved long-term stability in 2 cases with limbal stem-cell deficiency. CONCLUSIONS: Mini-Descemet stripping-automated endothelial keratoplasty technique can be an alternative approach to avoid poor visual outcomes of tectonic keratoplasty in paracentral perforations. It also offers host tissue preservation in eyes with high risk of rejection for tectonic grafts

    Statistical analysis of quality control measurements in IMRT for head and neck and prostate cancer

    Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) is a technique introduced to shape more precisely the dose distributions to the tumour, providing a higher dose escalation in the volume to irradiate and simultaneously decreasing the dose in the organs at risk which consequently reduces the treatment toxicity. This technique is widely used in prostate and head and neck (H&N) tumours. Given the complexity and the use of high doses in this technique it’s necessary to ensure as a safe and secure administration of the treatment, through the use of quality control programmes for IMRT.
