    Ising Model on Edge-Dual of Random Networks

    We consider Ising model on edge-dual of uncorrelated random networks with arbitrary degree distribution. These networks have a finite clustering in the thermodynamic limit. High and low temperature expansions of Ising model on the edge-dual of random networks are derived.     A Modal Series Representation of Genesio Chaotic System

    In this paper an analytic approach is devised to represent, and study the behavior of, nonlinear dynamic chaotic Genesio system using general nonlinear modal representation. In this approach, the original nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) of model transforms to a sequence of linear time- invariant ODEs. By solving the proposed linear ODEs sequence, the exact solution of the original nonlinear problem is determined in terms of uniformly convergent series. Also an efficient algorithm with low computational complexity and high accuracy is presented to find the approximate solution.     Intermittent exploration on a scale-free network

    We study an intermittent random walk on a random network of scale-free degree distribution. The walk is a combination of simple random walks of duration twt_w and random long-range jumps. While the time the walker needs to cover all the nodes increases with twt_w, the corresponding time for the edges displays a non monotonic behavior with a minimum for some nontrivial value of twt_w. This is a heterogeneity-induced effect that is not observed in homogeneous small-world networks. The optimal twt_w increases with the degree of assortativity in the network. Depending on the nature of degree correlations and the elapsed time the walker finds an over/under-estimate of the degree distribution exponent.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, published versio

    At present, industries within the health and life science sector are moving towards one another resulting in new industries such as the medical nutrition industry. Medical nutrition products are specific nutritional compositions for intervention in disease progression and symptom alleviation. Industry convergence, described as the blurring of boundaries between industries, plays a crucial role in the shaping of new markets and industries. Assuming that the medical nutrition industry has emerged from the convergence between the food and pharma industries, it is crucial to research how and which distinct industry domains have contributed to establish this relatively new industry. The first two stages of industry convergence (knowledge diffusion and consolidation) are measured by means of patent analysis. First, the extent of knowledge diffusion within the medical nutrition industry is graphed in a patent citation interrelations network.     Simple models of small world networks with directed links

    We investigate the effect of directed short and long range connections in a simple model of small world network. Our model is such that we can determine many quantities of interest by an exact analytical method. We calculate the function V(T)V(T), defined as the number of sites affected up to time TT when a naive spreading process starts in the network. As opposed to shortcuts, the presence of un-favorable bonds has a negative effect on this quantity. Hence the spreading process may not be able to affect all the network. We define and calculate a quantity named the average size of accessible world in our model.     3D imaging of colorectal cancer organoids identifies responses to Tankyrase inhibitors

    Aberrant activation of the Wnt signalling pathway is required for tumour initiation and survival in the majority of colorectal cancers. The development of inhibitors of Wnt signalling has been the focus of multiple drug discovery programs targeting colorectal cancer and other malignancies associated with aberrant pathway activation. However, progression of new clinical entities targeting the Wnt pathway has been slow. One challenge lies with the limited predictive power of 2D cancer cell lines because they fail to fully recapitulate intratumoural phenotypic heterogeneity. In particular, the relationship between 2D cancer cell biology and cancer stem cell function is poorly understood. By contrast, 3D tumour organoids provide a platform in which complex cell-cell interactions can be studied. However, complex 3D models provide a challenging platform for the quantitative analysis of drug responses of therapies that have differential effects on tumour cell subpopulations. Here, we generated tumour organoids from colorectal cancer patients and tested their responses to inhibitors of Tankyrase (TNKSi) which are known to modulate Wnt signalling. Using compounds with 3 orders of magnitude difference in cellular mechanistic potency together with image-based assays, we demonstrate that morphometric analyses can capture subtle alterations in organoid responses to Wnt inhibitors that are consistent with activity against a cancer stem cell subpopulation. Overall our study highlights the value of phenotypic readouts as a quantitative method to asses drug-induced effects in a relevant preclinical model

    Clusters of solutions and replica symmetry breaking in random k-satisfiability

    We study the set of solutions of random k-satisfiability formulae through the cavity method. It is known that, for an interval of the clause-to-variables ratio, this decomposes into an exponential number of pure states (clusters). We refine substantially this picture by: (i) determining the precise location of the clustering transition; (ii) uncovering a second `condensation' phase transition in the structure of the solution set for k larger or equal than 4. These results both follow from computing the large deviation rate of the internal entropy of pure states. From a technical point of view our main contributions are a simplified version of the cavity formalism for special values of the Parisi replica symmetry breaking parameter m (in particular for m=1 via a correspondence with the tree reconstruction problem) and new large-k expansions.Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures, typos corrected, discussion of appendix C expanded with a new figur
