Elastic scattering of intermediate-energy electrons from C_(60) molecules
Experimental and calculated differential cross sections for elastic scattering of electrons by C_(60) molecules at collision energies of 100 to 500 eV are reported. The elastic differential cross sections were measured in a standard crossed-beam apparatus, while the calculations were performed employing the Schwinger multichannel technique at the static-exchange level. Diffraction effects, some due to the overall spherical-cage structure and some to scattering by individual C atoms, are observed in both the measured and calculated cross sections
Spin polarization of the Ar* 2p−11/2 4s and 2p−11/2 3d resonant Auger decay
The spin-resolved Auger decay of the Ar 2p−11/2 3d state was measured at moderate energy resolution and compared with the decay of the 2p−11/2 4s. The former shows a lower transferred spin polarization and a similar, if not higher, dynamical spin polarization, supporting the statement that a fully resolved spectrum is not a necessary condition for observing dynamical spin polarization. An interpretation of the spin polarization as configuration interaction induced effect in the final ionic state leads to partial agreement with our relativistic distorted wave calculation utilizing a 36 configuration state function basis set. Comparison of the experimental and numerical results leads to ambiguities for at least one Auger line. A hypothetical, qualitative interpretation is discussed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/58121/2/b7_17_012.pd
On the recombination in high-order harmonic generation in molecules
We show that the dependence of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) on the
molecular orientation can be understood within a theoretical treatment that
does not involve the strong field of the laser. The results for H_2 show
excellent agreement with time-dependent strong field calculations for model
molecules, and this motivates a prediction for the orientation dependence of
HHG from the N_2 3s_g valence orbital. For both molecules, we find that the
polarization of recombination photons is influenced by the molecular
orientation. The variations are particularly pronounced for the N_2 valence
orbital, which can be explained by the presence of atomic p-orbitals.Comment: 6 pages 7 figure
Summary on tau Leptonic Branching Ratios and Universality
The large samples of tau decays available from CLEO and the four LEP
experiment have resulted in new, precise measurements of the leptonic branching
ratios of the . The experimental techniques to obtain these results are
reviewed with special emphasis on the DELPHI measurement. World averages are
found to be Be = (17.81 +/- 0.06) % and Bmu = (17.36 +/- 0.06) %. These results
are consistent with universality in the charged current couplings to a
precision of about 0.25 %. The branching ratio measurements can also be used to
constrain the "low energy parameter" eta. It is shown that the sensitivity to
eta depends on details of the momentum acceptance for muon identification in
the different experiments. Assuming universality in the couplings, the estimate
eta = 0.012 +/- 0.024 is obtained.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX, including 9 figures, uses epsf and espcrc2. Invited

Black carbon ageing in the Canadian Centre for Climate modelling and analysis atmospheric general circulation model
International audienceBlack carbon (BC) particles in the atmosphere have important impacts on climate. The amount of BC in the atmosphere must be carefully quantified to allow evaluation of the climate effects of this type of aerosol. In this study, we present the treatment of BC aerosol in the developmental version of the 4th generation Canadian Centre for Climate modelling and analysis (CCCma) atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM). The focus of this work is on the conversion of insoluble BC to soluble/mixed BC by physical and chemical ageing. Physical processes include the condensation of sulphuric and nitric acid onto the BC aerosol, and coagulation with more soluble aerosols such as sulphates and nitrates. Chemical processes that may age the BC aerosol include the oxidation of organic coatings by ozone. Four separate parameterizations of the ageing process are compared to a control simulation that assumes no ageing occurs. These simulations use 1) an exponential decay with a fixed 24h half-life, 2) a condensation and coagulation scheme, 3) an oxidative scheme, and 4) a linear combination of the latter two ageing treatments. Global BC burdens are 2.15, 0.15, 0.11, 0.21, and 0.11TgC for the control run, and four ageing schemes, respectively. The BC lifetimes are 98.1, 6.6, 5.0, 9.5, and 4.9 days, respectively. The sensitivity of modelled BC burdens, and concentrations to the factor of two uncertainty in the emissions inventory is shown to be greater than the sensitivity to the parameterization used to represent the BC ageing, except for the oxidation based parameterization. A computationally efficient parameterization that represents the processes of condensation, coagulation, and oxidation is shown to simulate BC ageing well in the CCCma AGCM. As opposed to the globally fixed ageing time scale, this treatment of BC ageing is responsive to varying atmospheric composition
Testing Higgs models via the vertex by a recoil method at the International Linear Collider
In general, charged Higgs bosons appear in non-minimal Higgs models.
The vertex is known to be related to the violation of the
global symmetry (custodial symmetry) in the Higgs sector. Its magnitude
strongly depends on the structure of the exotic Higgs models which contain
higher isospin representations such as triplet Higgs bosons. We study
the possibility of measuring the vertex via single charged
Higgs boson production associated with the boson at the International
Linear Collider (ILC) by using the recoil method. The feasibility of the signal
is analyzed assuming the polarized
electron and positron beams and the expected detector performance for the
resolution of the two-jet system at the ILC. The background events can be
reduced to a considerable extent by imposing the kinematic cuts even if we take
into account the initial state radiation. For a relatively light charged Higgs
boson whose mass is in the region of 120-130 GeV , the vertex would be precisely testable especially
when the decay of is lepton specific. The exoticness of the extended
Higgs sector can be explored by using combined information for this vertex and
the rho parameter.Comment: 22 pages, 23 figure
Experiences with a weighted decision tree learner
Machine learning algorithms for inferring decision trees typically choose a single “best” tree to describe the training data. Recent research has shown that classification performance can be significantly improved by voting predictions of multiple, independently produced decision trees. This paper describes an algorithm, OB1, that makes a weighted sum over many possible models. We describe one instance of OB1, that includes all possible decision trees as well as naïve Bayesian models. OB1 is compared with a number of other decision tree and instance based learning algorithms on some of the data sets from the UCI repository. Both an information gain and an accuracy measure are used for the comparison. On the information gain measure OB1 performs significantly better than all the other algorithms. On the accuracy measure it is significantly better than all the algorithms except naïve Bayes which performs comparably to OB1
