Mean parameter model for the Pekar-Fr\"{o}hlich polaron in a multilayered heterostructure
The polaron energy and the effective mass are calculated for an electron
confined in a finite quantum well constructed of
layers. To simplify the study we suggest a model in which parameters of a
medium are averaged over the ground-state wave function. The rectangular and
the Rosen-Morse potential are used as examples.
To describe the confined electron properties explicitly to the second order
of perturbations in powers of the electron-phonon coupling constant we use the
exact energy-dependent Green function for the Rosen-Morse confining potential.
In the case of the rectangular potential, the sum over all intermediate virtual
states is calculated. The comparison is made with the often used leading term
approximation when only the ground-state is taken into account as a virtual
state. It is shown that the results are quite different, so the incorporation
of all virtual states and especially those of the continuous spectrum is
essential.
Our model reproduces the correct three-dimensional asymptotics at both small
and large widths. We obtained a rather monotonous behavior of the polaron
energy as a function of the confining potential width and found a peak of the
effective mass. The comparison is made with theoretical results by other
authors. We found that our model gives practically the same (or very close)

Wave-packet dynamics in slowly perturbed crystals: Gradient corrections and Berry-phase effects
We present a unified theory for wave-packet dynamics of electrons in crystals
subject to perturbations varying slowly in space and time. We derive the
wave-packet energy up to the first order gradient correction and obtain all
kinds of Berry-phase terms for the semiclassical dynamics and the quantization
rule. For electromagnetic perturbations, we recover the orbital magnetization
energy and the anomalous velocity purely within a single-band picture without
invoking inter-band couplings. For deformations in crystals, besides a
deformation potential, we obtain a Berry-phase term in the Lagrangian due to
lattice tracking, which gives rise to new terms in the expressions for the
wave-packet velocity and the semiclassical force. For multiple-valued
displacement fields surrounding dislocations, this term manifests as a Berry
phase, which we show to be proportional to the Burgers vector around each

Detection of epithelial apoptosis in pelvic ileal pouches for ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous polyposis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) is the surgical procedure of choice for patients with refractory ulcerative colitis (UC) and for familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) with many rectal polyps. Pouchitis is one of the more frequent complications after IPAA in UC patients; however, it is rare in FAP.</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>Evaluate pro-apoptotic activity in endoscopically and histological normal mucosa of the ileal pouch in patients with UC and FAP.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Eighteen patients (nine with UC and nine with FAP) with J pouch after total rectocolectomy were studied. Biopsies were obtained from the mucosa of the pouch and from normal ileum. The specimens were snap-frozen and the expressions of Bax and Bcl-2 were determined by immunoblot of protein extracts and by immunohistochemistry analysis. FADD, Caspase-8, APAF-1 and Caspase-9 were evaluated by immunoprecipitation and immunoblot.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Patients with UC had significantly higher protein levels of Bax and APAF-1, Caspase-9 than patients with FAP, but were similar to controls. The expressions of Bcl-2 and FADD, Caspase-8 were similar in the groups. Immunohistochemistry for Bax showed less intensity of immunoreactions in FAP than in UC and Controls. Bcl-2 immunostaining was similar among the groups.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Patients with FAP present lower levels of pro-apoptotic proteins in all methods applied, even in the absence of clinical and endoscopic pouchitis and dysplasia in the histological analysis. These findings may explain a tendency of up-regulation of apoptosis in UC patients, resulting in higher rates of progression to pouchitis in these patients, which could correlate with mucosal atrophy that occurs in inflamed tissue. However, FAP patients had low pro-apoptotic activity in the mucosa, and it could explain the tendency to low cell turn over and presence of adenomas in this syndrome.</p
The ladies trial: laparoscopic peritoneal lavage or resection for purulent peritonitisA and Hartmann's procedure or resection with primary anastomosis for purulent or faecal peritonitisB in perforated diverticulitis (NTR2037)
Background: Recently, excellent results are reported on laparoscopic lavage in patients with purulent perforated diverticulitis as an alternative for sigmoidectomy and ostomy. The objective of this study is to determine whether LaparOscopic LAvage and drainage is a safe and effective treatment for patients with purulent peritonitis (LOLA-arm) and to determine the optimal resectional strategy in patients with a purulent or faecal peritonitis (DIVA-arm: perforated DIVerticulitis: sigmoidresection with or without Anastomosis). Methods/Design: In this multicentre randomised trial all patients with perforated diverticulitis are included. Upon laparoscopy, patients with purulent peritonitis are treated with laparoscopic lavage and drainage, Hartmann's procedure or sigmoidectomy with primary anastomosis in a ratio of 2:1:1 (LOLA-arm). Patients with faecal peritonitis will be randomised 1:1 between Hartmann's procedure and resection with primary anastomosis (DIVA-arm). The primary combined endpoint of the LOLA-arm is major morbidity and mortality. A sample size of 132:66:66 patients will be able to detect a difference in the primary endpoint from 25% in resectional groups compared to 10% in the laparoscopic lavage group (two sided alpha = 5%, power = 90%). Endpoint of the DIVA-arm is stoma free survival one year after initial surgery. It is remarkable how the Froehlich polaron, one of the simplest examples of a
Quantum Field Theoretical problem, as it basically consists of a single fermion
interacting with a scalar Bose field of ion displacements, has resisted full
analytical or numerical solution at all coupling since 1950, when its
Hamiltonian was first written. The field has been a testing ground for
analytical, semi-analytical, and numerical techniques, such as path integrals,
strong-coupling perturbation expansion, advanced variational, exact
diagonalisation (ED), and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) techniques. This article

Extra-Intestinal Manifestations of Familial Adenomatous Polyposis
Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an autosomal dominantly inherited disorder, which results from a germ line mutation in the APC (adenomatous polyposis coli) gene. FAP is characterized by the formation of hundreds to thousands of colorectal adenomatous polyps. Although the development of colorectal cancer stands out as the most prevalent complication, FAP is a multisystem disorder of growth. This means, it is comparable to other diseases such as the MEN syndromes, Von Hippel-Lindau disease and neurofibromatosis. However, the incidence of many of its clinical features is much lower. Therefore, a specialized multidisciplinary approach to optimize health care—common for other disorders—is not usually taken for FAP patients. Thus, clinicians that care for and counsel members of high-risk families should have familiarity with all the extra-intestinal manifestations of this syndrome. FAP-related complications, for which medical attention is essential, are not rare and their estimated lifetime risk presumably exceeds 30%. Affected individuals can develop thyroid and pancreatic cancer, hepatoblastomas, CNS tumors (especially medulloblastomas), and various benign tumors such as adrenal adenomas, osteomas, desmoid tumors and dental abnormalities. Efficiency and harmfulness of air-purifying photocatalytic commercial devices: From standardized chamber tests to nanoparticles release
International audienceThe aim of this study was the comparison of the efficiency of several commercial photocatalytic air-purifiers according to the French XP B44-013 AFNOR standard test (soon European) in a large closed chamber at the ppbV level under controlled conditions representative of indoor air. After inter-lab comparisons validating the method and analytical procedures, the commercial devices were evaluated for the mineralization of a mixture of four representative VOCs (acetaldehyde, acetone, n-heptane and toluene). Comparison of the degradation rate allowed the determination of the clean air delivery rate (CADR), while the mineralization efficiency was determined from CO\textlessinf\textgreater2\textless/inf\textgreater analysis. The devices could be ranked in two classes: class 1 for efficient devices (high CADR, extended mineralization, no by-product) and class 2 for inefficient and unsafe ones (by-product release even in the absence of VOCs, low CADR and mineralization). Electrical low pressure impactor (ELPI) could not evidence any nanoparticles release with any of the studied devices. Formaldehyde was the main by-product detected in all cases, but the concentration remained low and decreased with time due to its total mineralization with class 1 devices. For class 2 devices, formaldehyde concentration was higher and went on increasing with time. These experimental data point out the urgent need of careful evaluation and certification of commercial photocatalytic air-purifiers for consumer's safety and secure development of the technology. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.
