Simulating star formation in molecular cloud cores IV. The role of turbulence and thermodynamics
We perform SPH simulations of the collapse and fragmentation of low-mass
cores having different initial levels of turbulence
(alpha_turb=0.05,0.10,0.25). We use a new treatment of the energy equation
which captures the transport of cooling radiation against opacity due to both
dust and gas (including the effects of dust sublimation, molecules, and H^-
ions). We also perform comparison simulations using a standard barotropic
equation of state. We find that -- when compared with the barotropic equation
of state -- our more realistic treatment of the energy equation results in more
protostellar objects being formed, and a higher proportion of brown dwarfs; the
multiplicity frequency is essentially unchanged, but the multiple systems tend
to have shorter periods (by a factor ~3), higher eccentricities, and higher
mass ratios. The reason for this is that small fragments are able to cool more
effectively with the new treatment, as compared with the barotropic equation of
state. We find that the process of fragmentation is often bimodal. The first
protostar to form is usually, at the end, the most massive, i.e. the primary.
However, frequently a disc-like structure subsequently forms round this
primary, and then, once it has accumulated sufficient mass, quickly fragments
to produce several secondaries. We believe that this delayed fragmentation of a
disc-like structure is likely to be an important source of very low-mass

The PRINTS database: a fine-grained protein sequence annotation and analysis resource—its status in 2012
The PRINTS database, now in its 21st year, houses a collection of diagnostic protein family ‘fingerprints’. Fingerprints are groups of conserved motifs, evident in multiple sequence alignments, whose unique inter-relationships provide distinctive signatures for particular protein families and structural/functional domains. As such, they may be used to assign uncharacterized sequences to known families, and hence to infer tentative functional, structural and/or evolutionary relationships. The February 2012 release (version 42.0) includes 2156 fingerprints, encoding 12 444 individual motifs, covering a range of globular and membrane proteins, modular polypeptides and so on. Here, we report the current status of the database, and introduce a number of recent developments that help both to render a variety of our annotation and analysis tools easier to use and to make them more widely available
Eight Weeks of Self-Resisted Neck Strength Training Improves Neck Strength in Age-Grade Rugby Union Players:A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial
BACKGROUND: Greater neck strength is associated with fewer head and neck injuries. Neck-strengthening programs are commonly burdensome, requiring specialist equipment or significant time commitment, which are barriers to implementation. HYPOTHESIS: Completing a neck-strengthening program will increase isometric neck strength in age-group rugby players. STUDY DESIGN: A pilot randomized controlled exercise intervention study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 2. METHODS: Twenty-eight U18 (under 18) male regional age-group rugby union players were randomized (intervention n =15/control n = 13). An 8-week exercise program was supervised during preseason at the regional training center. Control players continued their “normal practice,” which did not include neck-specific strengthening exercises. The 3-times weekly trainer-led intervention program involved a series of 15-second self-resisted contractions, where players pushed maximally against their own head, in forward, backward, left, and right directions. OUTCOME MEASURE: Peak isometric neck strength (force N) into neck flexion, extension, and left and right side flexion was measured using a handheld dynamometer. RESULTS: Postintervention between-group mean differences (MDs) in isometric neck strength change were adjusted for baseline strength and favored the intervention for total neck strength (effect size [ES] = 1.2, MD ± 95% CI = 155.9 ± 101.9 N, P = 0.004) and for neck strength into extension (ES = 1.0, MD ± 95% CI = 59.9 ± 45.4 N, P = 0.01), left side flexion (ES = 0.7, MD ± 95% CI = 27.5 ± 26.9 N, P = 0.05), and right side flexion (ES = 1.3, MD ± 95% CI = 50.5 ± 34.4 N, P = 0.006). CONCLUSION: This resource-efficient neck-strengthening program has few barriers to implementation and provides a clear benefit in U18 players’ neck strength. While the present study focused on adolescent rugby players, the program may be appropriate across all sports where head and neck injuries are of concern and resources are limited. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Greater neck strength is associated with fewer head and neck injuries, including concussion. Performing this neck exercise program independently, or as part of a whole-body program like Activate, an interactive guide for players and coaches, could contribute to lower sports-related head and neck injuries
Adaptive smoothing lengths in SPH
Context: There is a need to improve the fidelity of SPH simulations of
self-gravitating gas dynamics. Aims: We remind users of SPH that, if smoothing
lengths are adjusted so as to keep the number of neighbours, , in the
range , the tolerance,
, should be set to zero, as first noted by Nelson
& Papaloizou. We point out that this is a very straightforward and
computationally inexpensive constraint to implement. Methods: We demonstrate
this by simulating acoustic oscillations of a self-gravitating isentropic
monatomic gas-sphere (cf. Lucy), using
particles and . Results: We show that there is a
marked reduction in the rates of numerical dissipation and diffusion as
is reduced from 10 to zero. Moreover this
reduction incurs a very small computational overhead. Conclusions: We propose
that this should become a standard test for codes used in simulating star
formation. It is a highly relevant test, because pressure waves generated by
the switch from approximate isothermality to approximate adiabaticity play a
critical role in the fragmentation of collapsing prestellar cores. Since many

Enhancement Effects of Transition and Vavilov-Cherenkov Radiation Mechanisms Under Grazing Interaction of Fast Electrons With a Thick Substrate Applied by Thin Layer
The paper presents the results of a theoretical study and a mathematical model of radiation processes occurred during the grazing interaction of fast electrons with semi-infinite targets applied on a thin amorphous layer. The developed model considers Vavilov-Cherenkov and transition radiation mechanisms and predicts the possibility to enhance the angular radiation density under grazing incidence of fast electrons on the layer. Platelet responses to agonists in a cohort of highly characterised platelet donors are consistent over time.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Platelet function shows significant inheritance that is at least partially genetically controlled. There is also evidence that the platelet response is stable over time, but there are few studies that have assessed consistency of platelet function over months and years. We aimed to measure platelet function in platelet donors over time in individuals selected from a cohort of 956 donors whose platelet function had been previously characterised. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Platelet function was assessed by flow cytometry, measuring fibrinogen binding and P-selectin expression after stimulation with either cross-linked collagen-related peptide or adenosine 5'-diphosphate. Eighty-nine donors from the Cambridge Platelet Function Cohort whose platelet responses were initially within the lower or upper decile of reactivity were retested between 4 months and five and a half years later. RESULTS: There was moderate-to-high correlation between the initial and repeat platelet function results for all assays (P ≤ 0·007, r2 0·2961-0·7625); furthermore, the range of results observed in the initial low and high responder groups remained significantly different at the time of the second test (P ≤ 0·0005). CONCLUSION: Platelet function remains consistent over time. This implies that this potential influence on quality of donated platelet concentrates will remain essentially constant for a given donor
Perceptions Of School By Two Teenage Boys With Asperger Syndrome And Their Mothers: A Qualitative Study
This qualitative study aimed to develop an understanding of the challenges faced by teenage boys with Asperger syndrome and their mothers. A case study approach was used to collect data from two 13-year-old boys who have Asperger syndrome and their mothers in Queensland, Australia. Data were collected through the use of semi¬structured interviews. The words of the boys and their mothers provide a valuable insight into the personal experiences and feelings of the par¬ticipants. An inductive approach to data analysis identified four themes: (1) developmental differences; (2) problems associated with the general characteristics of Asperger syndrome (i.e. communication and social difficulties, restricted range of interests, a need for routine); (3) stress; and (4) 'masquerading'. The first three themes relate strongly to the current literature, but the emergence of masquerading is of particular interest in developing a fuller understanding of the experiences of individuals with Asperger syndrome at school
Coordinating role of His216 in MgATP binding and cleavage in pyruvate carboxylase
His216 is a well-conserved residue in pyruvate carboxylases and, on the basis of structures of the enzyme, appears to have a role in the binding of MgATP, forming an interaction with the 3'-hydroxyl group of the ribose ring. Mutation of this residue to asparagine results in a 9-fold increase in the Km for MgATP in its steady-state cleavage in the absence of pyruvate and a 3-fold increase in the Km for MgADP in its steady-state phosphorylation by carbamoyl phosphate. However, from single-turnover experiments of MgATP cleavage, the Kd of the enzyme·MgATP complex is essentially the same in the wild-type enzyme and H216N. Direct stopped-flow measurements of nucleotide binding and release using the fluorescent analogue FTP support these observations. However, the first-order rate constant for MgATP cleavage in the single-turnover experiments in H216N is only 0.75% of that for the wild-type enzyme, and thus, the MgATP cleavage step is rate-limiting in the steady state for H216N but not for the wild-type enzyme. Close examination of the structure of the enzyme suggested that His216 may also interact with Glu218, which in turn interacts with Glu305 to form a proton relay system involved in the deprotonation of bicarbonate. Single-turnover MgATP cleavage experiments with mutations of these two residues resulted in kinetic parameters similar to those observed in H216N. We suggest that the primary role of His216 is to coordinate the binding of MgATP and the deprotonation of bicarbonate in the reaction to form the putative carboxyphosphate intermediate by participation in a proton relay system involving Glu218 and Glu305.Abdussalam Adina-Zada, Sarawut Jitrapakdee, John C.
