Esterification of Acetic Acid with Butanol: Operation in a Packed Bed Reactive Distillation Column

    Get PDF
The esterification reaction between acetic acid and butanol was investigated in a reactive distillation column. The thermodynamic aspects of considered system are discussed, equilibrium constant, vapor pressures and UNIQUAC interaction parameters were investigated. Reactive distillation experiments were carried out to provide high purity butyl acetate. For this purpose, a 2 m column with nonreactive and reactive zones filled with Amberlyst 15 and Raschig rings, were used in the experiments. Several operating conditions such as total feed flow rate, molar ratio of butanol to acetic acid, amount of catalyst and reboiler temperature and three different column configurations were realized experimentally. The experimental optimum values of these parameters obtained were 1.6 mol h–1, 1, 25 g and 383 K, respectively within the range of study. The butyl acetate purity of 82 % and acetic acid conversion of 80.5 % were obtained at the optimum operating conditions

Multi-task Deep Neural Networks in Automated Protein Function Prediction

In recent years, deep learning algorithms have outperformed the state-of-the art methods in several areas thanks to the efficient methods for training and for preventing overfitting, advancement in computer hardware, the availability of vast amount data. The high performance of multi-task deep neural networks in drug discovery has attracted the attention to deep learning algorithms in bioinformatics area. Here, we proposed a hierarchical multi-task deep neural network architecture based on Gene Ontology (GO) terms as a solution to protein function prediction problem and investigated various aspects of the proposed architecture by performing several experiments. First, we showed that there is a positive correlation between performance of the system and the size of training datasets. Second, we investigated whether the level of GO terms on GO hierarchy related to their performance. We showed that there is no relation between the depth of GO terms on GO hierarchy and their performance. In addition, we included all annotations to the training of a set of GO terms to investigate whether including noisy data to the training datasets change the performance of the system. The results showed that including less reliable annotations in training of deep neural networks increased the performance of the low performed GO terms, significantly. We evaluated the performance of the system using hierarchical evaluation method. Mathews correlation coefficient was calculated as 0.75, 0.49 and 0.63 for molecular function, biological process and cellular component categories, respectively. We showed that deep learning algorithms have a great potential in protein function prediction area. We plan to further improve the DEEPred by including other types of annotations from various biological data sources. We plan to construct DEEPred as an open access online tool.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, 4 table

Readability and understandability of andrology questionnaires

Objective: Medical questionnaires, which enable collection, comparison and analysis of appropriate data as a means of written communication between a patient and a doctor, must be easily readable, and understandable. Here, we measure the readability and understandability of questionnaires used in andrology and examine the relationship between the educational status of the patients and the understandability of the forms. Material and methods: Seven questionnaires used to diagnose andological diseases were selected from the European Association of Urology guidelines. The number of syllables per word, the number of words in a sentence, and the average word and sentence lengths were calculated for each Turkish validated form. Readability scores were calculated, and closet tests were used to measure the understandability of the texts. Results: Three hundred and twenty-seven male volunteers participated in the study. Two hundred and sixteen of the participants (66%) had a high school or college education. The readability level of the seven forms was determined to be ''Difficult'' or ''Very Difficult,'' and at least a high school education level was required to understand the forms. As education level and monthly income increased, the understandability of the forms increased; as the readability of the forms became more difficult, their understandability decreased (p<0.001). Conclusion: The readability levels of questionnaires used in andrology are well above the reading level of Turkey. Health providers can help patients to fill out forms to increase doctor-patient communication

    Non-autonomous Svinolupov Jordan KdV Systems

    Get PDF
Non-autonomous Svinolupov-Jordan systems are considered. The integrability criteria of such systems are associated with the existence of recursion operators. A new non-autonomous KdV system is obtained and its recursion operator is given for all NN. The examples for N=2 and N=3 are studied in detail. Some possible transformations are also discussed which map some systems to autonomous cases.Comment: Latex file (amssymb), 10 page

Minimal Extension of Einstein's Theory: The Quartic Gravity

    Get PDF
We study structure of solutions of the recently constructed minimal extensions of Einstein's gravity in four dimensions at the quartic curvature level. The extended higher derivative theory, just like Einstein's gravity, has only a massless spin-two graviton about its unique maximally symmetric vacuum. The extended theory does not admit the Schwarzschild or Kerr metrics as exact solutions, hence there is no issue of Schwarzschild type singularity but, approximately, outside a source, spherically symmetric metric with the correct Newtonian limit is recovered. We also show that for all Einstein space-times, square of the Riemann tensor (the Kretschmann scalar or the Gauss-Bonnet invariant) obeys a non-linear scalar Klein-Gordon equation.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, typos corrected, version to appear in PR

We give a higher even dimensional extension of vacuum colliding gravitational plane waves with the combinations of collinear and non-collinear polarized four-dimensional metric. The singularity structure of space-time depends on the parameters of the solution.Comment: 4 pages RevTex
