    Introduction to Measurement with Theory

    Get PDF
This working paper is the first draft of an overview and commentary on the papers to appear in a Macroeconomic Dynamics Special Issue on Measurement with Theory. The included papers in the special issue are part of a larger initiative to promote "measurement with theory" in economics and planned to appear as special issues of other journals. A later revised draft of this initial commentary is planned to appear as the introduction to the Macroeconomic Dynamics special issue, expected to appear in 2010.Measurement; index number theory; aggregation theory.

Classical Statistical Mechanics and Landau Damping

    Get PDF
We study the retarded response function in scalar Ď•4\phi^4-theory at finite temperature. We find that in the high-temperature limit the imaginary part of the self-energy is given by the classical theory to leading order in the coupling. In particular the plasmon damping rate is a purely classical effect to leading order, as shown by Aarts and Smit. The dominant contribution to Landau damping is given by the propagation of classical fields in a heat bath of non-interacting fields.Comment: 9 pages, 3 eps figures, LaTe

Spin-Correlation Coefficients and Phase-Shift Analysis for p+3^3He Elastic Scattering

Angular Distributions for the target spin-dependent observables A0y_{0y}, Axx_{xx}, and Ayy_{yy} have been measured using polarized proton beams at several energies between 2 and 6 MeV and a spin-exchange optical pumping polarized 3^3He target. These measurements have been included in a global phase-shift analysis following that of George and Knutson, who reported two best-fit phase-shift solutions to the previous global p+3^3He elastic scattering database below 12 MeV. These new measurements, along with measurements of cross-section and beam-analyzing power made over a similar energy range by Fisher \textit{et al.}, allowed a single, unique solution to be obtained. The new measurements and phase-shifts are compared with theoretical calculations using realistic nucleon-nucleon potential models.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.

Adaptable-radius, time-orbiting magnetic ring trap for Bose-Einstein condensates

We theoretically investigate an adjustable-radius magnetic storage ring for laser-cooled and Bose-condensed atoms. Additionally, we discuss a novel time-dependent variant of this and other ring traps. Time-orbiting ring traps provide a high optical access method for spin-flip loss prevention near a storage ring's circular magnetic field zero. Our scalable storage ring will allow one to probe the fundamental limits of condensate Sagnac interferometry.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. accepted in J Phys

Looking for CP Violation in W Production and Decay

We describe CP violating observables in resonant W±W^\pm and W±W^\pm plus one jet production at the Tevatron. We present simple examples of CP violating effective operators, consistent with the symmetries of the Standard Model, which would give rise to these observables. We find that CP violating effects coming from new physics at the TeVTeV scale could in principle be observable at the Tevatron with 10610^6 W±W^\pm decays.Comment: 15 pgs with standard LATEX, 7 ps figures embedded with eps

Spaces of finite element differential forms

We discuss the construction of finite element spaces of differential forms which satisfy the crucial assumptions of the finite element exterior calculus, namely that they can be assembled into subcomplexes of the de Rham complex which admit commuting projections. We present two families of spaces in the case of simplicial meshes, and two other families in the case of cubical meshes. We make use of the exterior calculus and the Koszul complex to define and understand the spaces. These tools allow us to treat a wide variety of situations, which are often treated separately, in a unified fashion.Comment: To appear in: Analysis and Numerics of Partial Differential Equations, U.
