Detailed atmospheric abundance analysis of the optical counterpart of the IR source IRAS 16559-2957
We have undertaken a detailed abundance analysis of the optical counterpart
of the IR source IRAS16559-2957 with the aim of confirming its possible
post-AGB nature. The star shows solar metallicity and our investigation of a
large number of elements including CNO and 12C/13C suggests that this object

A vindication of the RR Lyrae Fourier light curve decomposition for the calculation of metallicity and distance in globular clusters
We report the mean metallicity and absolute magnitude of RR Lyrae stars in a
sample of 37 globular clusters, calculated via the Fourier decomposition of
their light curves and ad hoc semiempirical calibrations, in an unprecedented
homogeneous approach. This enabled a new discussion of the metallicity
dependence of the horizontal branch (HB) luminosity, as a fundamental distance
indicator. The calibration for the RRab and RRc stars should be treated
separately. For the RRab the dispersion is larger and non-linear. For the RRc
stars the correlation is less steep, very tight and linear. The relevance of
the HB structural parameter L, is highlighted and offer a non-linear
calibration of the form MV ([Fe/H],L). Excellent agreement is found between
values of [Fe/H] and MV from the light curve decomposition with spectroscopic
values and distances obtained via Gaia-DR3 and HST. The variable stars census

Globular cluster metallicities and distances from disentangling their RR Lyrae light curves
We present mean horizontal branch absolute magnitudes and iron abundances for
a sample of 39 globular clusters. These quantities were calculated in an
unprecedented homogeneous fashion based on Fourier decomposition of ligt curves
of RR Lyrae cluster members. Zero points for the luminosity calibrations are
discussed. Our photometrically derived metallicities and distances compare very
well with spectroscopic determinations of [Fe/H] and accurate distances
obtained using {\sl Gaia} and {\sl Hubble Space Telescope} data. The need to
distinguish between the results for RRab and RRc stars for a correct evaluation
of the --[Fe/H] relation is discussed. For RRab stars, the relation is
non-linear, and the horizontal branch structure plays a significant role. For
RRc stars, the relation remains linear and tight, and the slope is very
shallow. Hence, the RRc stars seem better indicators of the parental cluster
distances. Systematic time-series CCD imaging performed over the last 20 years
enabled to discover and classify 330 variables in our sample of globular

Investigation of variable star candidates in the globular cluster NGC 5024 (M53)
We have performed a careful investigation of the 74 candidate variable stars
presented by Safanova & Stalin (2011). For this purpose we used our data base
of imaging and light curves from Arellano Ferro et al. (2011) and Arellano
Ferro et al. (2012). We find that two candidates are known variable stars,
eight candidates were discovered first by Arellano Ferro et al. (2011) but
would not have been known to Safanova & Stalin (2011) at the time of their
paper submission, while four candidates are new variables. Three of the new
variables are SX Phe type and one is a semi-regular red giant variable (SR
type). We also tentatively confirm the presence of true variability in two
other candidates and we are unable to investigate another four candidates
because they are not in our data base. However, we find that the remaining 54
candidate variable stars are spurious detections where systematic trends in the
light curves have been mistaken for true variability. We believe that the
erroneous detections are caused by the adoption of a very low detection
threshold used to identify these candidates.Comment: MNRAS accepte
Physical parameters of three field RR Lyrae stars
This work was partially supported by DGAPA–Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico through project IN104612.Stromgren uvby - beta photometry of the stars classified as RR Lyrae stars RU Piscium, SS Piscium and TU Ursae Majoris has been used to estimate their iron abundance, temperature, gravity and absolute magnitude. The stability of the pulsating period is discussed. The nature of SS Psc as a RRc or a HADS is addressed. The reddening of each star is estimated from the Stromgren colour indices and reddening sky maps. The results of three approaches to the determination of [Fe/H], T-eff and log(g) are discussed: Fourier light curve decomposition, the Preston Delta S index and the theoretical grids on the (b - y)(o) - c(10) plane.Peer reviewe
