    CPV tests with rare kaon decays

    The K_S \to pi+/- e+ e- decay mode has been investigated using the data collected in 2002 by the NA48/1 collaboration. With about 23k signal events and 59k K_L \to pi+ pi- pi0_D normalization decays, the K_S \to pi+ pi- e+ e- branching ratio was determined. This result is also used to set an upper limit on the presence of E1 direct emission in the decay amplitude. The CP-violating asymmetry has been also measured. We report on measurements of the rare decays K +/- \to pi+/- e+ e- and K+/- \to pi+/- mu+ mu- . The full NA48/2 data set was analyzed, leading to more than 7200 reconstructed events in the electronic and more than 3000 events in the muonic channel, the latter exceeding the total existing statistics by a factor of four. For both channels the selected events are almost background-free. From these events, we have determined the branching fraction and form factors of K+/- \to pi+/- e+ e- using different theoretical models. Our results improve the existing world averages significantly.     Precision measurements of rare kaon decays

    We report the recent results on rare kaon decays from the NA48/2 experiment. The precise measurement of direct photon emission (DE) in the decay K+- -> pi+- pi0 gamma and its interference (INT), with the INT amplitude being observed for the first time, has been finalized. This study is based on the full NA48/2 data set with about 600k reconstructed K+- -> pi+- pi0 gamma decays which is factor of 30 larger than for previous experiments. Samples of about 7200 reconstructed K+- -> pi+- e+ e-, and more than 3000 K+- -> pi+- mu+ mu- events, with very small background contamination, have been collected. The latter is exceeding the total existing statistics by a factor of five. A precise measurement of the branching fractions and the form factors of the rare decays K+- -> pi+- l+ l- has been performed using different theoretical models.     First observation of the decay K+ -> e+ nu mu+ mu-

    Experiment 865 at the Brookhaven AGS has observed the decay K^+ -> e^+ nu mu^+ mu^-. The branching ratio extracted is (1.72 +/- 0.37(stat) +/- 0.17(syst) +/- 0.19(model)) x 10^{-8} where the third term in the error results from the use of a model to extrapolate into a kinematic region dominated by background.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, Revtex4.     Measurement of cation selectivity in soils provides important information about the affinity and binding strength of a particular cation on soil surfaces. Gaines-Thomas (KGT) selectivity coefficients were determined for a variety of K/Ca and K/Pb ratios on an Oxisol and Ultisol soil from Puerto Rico. The calculated KGT values indicated a preference for K+ over Ca2+ or Pb2+. The selectivity for Pb2+ was significantly greater than that for Ca2+ due to the larger hydrated charge density of Pb2+ relative to that of Ca2+. The patterns of selectivity were independent of metal type. The selectivity of the Oxisol for Ca2+ or Pb2+ exhibited no trend/did not change with changes in divalent metal surface coverage indicating exchange sites had similar affinities for Ca2+ and Pb2+. The Ultisol displayed a decrease in selectivity for Ca2+ and Pb2+ with increasing surface coverage of these ions. This was attributed to the presence of smectite in the Ultisol which was able to partially collapse when K+ saturated. Some of the Pb sorption in the soils was due to chemisorption. The Oxisol chemisorbed ~ 3000 ppm Pb while that value for the Ultisol was ~ 1900 ppm. The differences were due to the greater quantities of Fe/Al oxides and organic matter in the Oxisol relative to the Ultisol. SEM-EDX spectroscopy detected discrete Pb-C phases in both soils. The C was from organic matter as PbCO3 was not stable under experimental conditions. It was possible Pb was associated with organic sulfhydral groups. The selectivity exhibited by soil systems for various nutrient and heavy metals is important in elucidating how available these metals will be for plant/animal uptake as well as their mobility and stability in the soil environment
