    Analysis on Reading and Writing Section of Test Items in 2009/2010 English National Final Examination (UAN) for Junior High School Students

    ABSTRACT This paper attempts to analyze the test items in the English National Final Examination (UAN) for Junior High School Students in the academic year 2009/2010. This study aims at analyzing the compatibility of the test items of package A in reading and writing section of English National Final Examination for Junior High School Students with the standard of graduate competence and the cognitive domains used in the test. The data were collected by using documentary method, while in analyzing the data the writers focused on matching the compatibility of the test items with the Standard of Graduate Competence and identifying the cognitive domain used. From the analysis, it was found that the test items of package A in reading and writing section of English National Final Examination 2009/2010 were in line with the Standard of Graduate Competence (SKL) arranged by the government. The cognitive domains in reading section mostly used level of comprehension.     A Need Analysis in Developing Project-Based Writing Assessment Module to Stimulate Studentsā€™ Critical Thinking and Creativity

Moreover, this study investigated the type of assessment needed by SMA students to stimulate their critical thinking and creativity. The writing assessment evaluation was carried out through a need analysis. The subjects of this study were the English teachers and the tenth grade students of SMAN 12 Semarang in the academic year of 2017/2018. Questionnaire, interview, classroom observation, and teacherā€™s document observation were used as the instrument in collecting the data. This study utilized the qualitative descriptive design which tends to ļ¬nd the data by observing the context directly and then a data interpretation was conducted. The major ļ¬ndings showed that the teacher got difļ¬culty in developing a higher-order thinking assessment which can stimulate studentsā€™ critical thinking and creativity. In addition, the English teachers had already known and applied the project-based writing assessment, but he never did any development of project-based writing assessment which can stimulate the studentsā€™ critical thinking and creativity. The assessment should be based on the 2013 curriculum characteristics and it should refer to the top tree level of Bloomā€™s cognitive taxonomy namely analyzing, evaluating, and creating.     Keywords: Project Base Writing, Senior High School, Assesmen

    Promoting EFL Student Teachersā€™ Life-Long Learning through Microteaching Lesson Study

    The success of lesson study as an approach for teacher professional development in improving studentsā€™ learning has inspired the works on microteaching lesson study which is designed for student teachers in microteaching course. Some studies show that microteaching lesson study brought about positive result to student teachersā€™ pedagogical ability and content knowledge. However, that microteaching lesson study influences student teachers in their teaching internship, that is the course taken after microteaching where student teachers teach real students in real schools, has not been revealed yet. This study aims at exploring the influence of microteaching lesson study on the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) student teachers in teaching internship and to what extent the influence was to promote the EFL student teachersā€™ life-long learning to teach. It is a qualitative study with semi-structured group interview as the instrument of the research. The subject of the study was ten EFL student teachers who voluntarily participated in the study from twenty two student teachers. They had enrolled in a microteaching class that applied microteaching lesson study in the sixth semester and then took the teaching internship in the seventh semester. The finding of the study indicates that microteaching lesson study has considerably influences most of the EFL student teachers in gaining life-long learning to teach as they already implemented the steps of microteaching lesson study in their teaching internship initiatively. Finally, this study recommends teacher educators to adapt lesson study in microteaching course that can make the EFL student teachers to keep learning to teach

    Towards Teachersā€™ Communicative Competence Enhancement: A Study on School Preparation for Bilingual Programs

    This research is a preliminary study of an empirical research aimed to develop an English training model to enhance teachersā€™ communicative competence in bilingual schools. This preliminary study aims to give a description of the schoolsā€™ background and preparation to run bilingual programs, teachersā€™ background and experience in teaching using English, and the challenges related to communicative competence which are faced by teachers inside and outside the classrooms. This study was a qualitative study and the data were collected using semi-structured interview, open-ended questionnaire, and focus group discussion. This study involved 54 teachers and 5 school principals. The results of the study revealed that the schools under this study were under the category of additive bilingual education; the teachers in the bilingual programs were English and non-English Department graduates; and the challenges faced by the teachers were mostly related with their teaching experience and educational background. The findings of this study will be useful to recommend teacher trainings as a part of teachersā€™ professional development

    Effective Use of Lesson Plan to Trigger Students Autonomy

    Abstract. This study was intended to trigger students autonomy in joining Genre-based Writing class of State Universityof Semarang. Further, it was conducted to know how the students demonstrate their ability in using a set of tactics for taking control of their own learning. For this purpose, 30 students were randomly chosen and two observers involved in lesson study consisted of plan, do, and see. The result showed one of the indicators of succesful teaching and learning in the classroom was not only determined by interaction between the lecturer and the students in the classroom but also the use of lesson plan designed. In triggering the students autonomy in learning, the lecturer established a variety of instructional strategies focusing on academic expectations through the lesson plan. The lecture was designed to engage the students activeness and autonomy so that the goal of learning could be achieved well

    Analysis of Instrument Development Recount Text Writing Test HOTS for Vocational High School using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA)

    This study aims to determine the construct validity and reliability of the instrument recount text writing test HOTS in English subjects for vocational high school students. This method used a development research design from Djemari Mardapi which has been modified with the three steps. The analysis of construct validity instrument is based on how many factors are needed to explain the relationship between a set of indicators and is used the SPSS Statistic v24 application and reliability used Cronbach's Alpha. The sample in this study were 30 students with a quota sampling approach and were taken randomly. The results of the analysis construct validity with EFA got KMO values > 0.5, Anti Image Correlation > 0.5, Eigenvalue 1 and Factor Loading 0.3 and instrument reliability is 0.771. The results showed that overall, the items of instrument recount text writing test HOTS in English subjects for vocational high school students had good construct validity scores, all items were able to measure every cognitive ability and showed that the construct validity of each test item developed was good because of construct validity. Teachers need to use the development of this standard instrument to reduce the level of subjectivity of the assessment. Teachers should start using learning models and include HOTS questions to improve students' thinking skills
