    Phytoplankton Biomass and Environmental Descriptors of Water Quality of an Urban Lagoon

    The Jansen lagoon is a coastal system formed by damming the Ana Jansen Creek, which is located in the northwest of São Luís Island (northern Brazil) and is under high urban influence. The use of indexes to assess the water quality in aquatic systems is important because they show the degradation degree of an area and give support to measures for the sustainability and protection of aquatic life, consequently. For the seasonal and spatial analysis of environmental and biological variables, six bimonthly surveys between November 2011 and September 2012 were carried out at five sampling sites. In addition, indexes such as the index of minimum parameters for the protection of aquatic communities, Trophic State Index, and Aquatic Life Protection Index were applied to evaluate the water quality. High levels of dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, total phosphorus, and chlorophyll a were observed in the lagoon waters. In general, the water quality indexes showed that the Jansen lagoon has a poor water quality due to elevated DO and pH as well as high concentration of surfactants and phenols. These environmental conditions favored the intense process of eutrophication (hypereutrophy) and environmental degradation of the area, affecting the development of aquatic biota

    O estudo da distribuição vertical das macroalgas aderidas em rizóforos de Rhizophora mangle L. foi realizado em três estações de coleta localizadas nos manguezais de Parna-Açu e Tauá-Mirim, ambas localizadas a sudoeste da Ilha de São Luís. Em cada estação de coleta foram amostrados cinco rizóforos, os quais foram divididos em três estratos (00–40, 40–80 e >80 cm). Para determinar a distribuição vertical das macroalgas utilizaram-se os valores de biomassa algal. A espécie Bostrychia calliptera (Montagne) ocupou toda extensão dos rizóforos, enquanto que Bostrychia tenella Lamouroux restringiu-se aos estratos (00–40 e 40–80 cm). A composição florística identificada nas três estações apresentou predomínio dos gêneros Bostrychia Montagne, Catenella Greville e Caloglossa J. Agardh. Na estiagem, os maiores valores de biomassa algal foram registrados nos estratos (00–40 e 40–80cm), com maior contribuição de Bostrychia calliptera e Bostrychia tenella. Os valores de biomassa da estação I foram mais elevados do que os registrados para as estações II e III.   Abstract   Vertical distribution of epiphytes macroalgae in rhizophores of Rhizophora mangle L. in the Parna-Açu and Tauá-Mirim’s mangroves of the São Luís/MA - Basil The study of the vertical distribution on the epiphytes macroalgae associated with Rhizophora mangle rhizophores was accomplished in three stations the southwestern part of São Luís Island – MA. Five rhizophores were investigated in each station, that was divided en three strata (00–40, 40–80 and > 80cm). Algal biomass was used to estimate the macroalgae distribution. Bostrychia calliptera (Montagne) species occupied all extension of the rhizophores, while the Bostrychia tenella Lamouroux restricted it the strata (00–40 e 40–80cm). The floristic composition identified in the three stations was similar to those found the mangroves of the brazilian coast and of the world as well, prevailing the genus Bostrychia Montagne, Catenella Greville e Caloglossa J.Agardh. The biggest amounts of algal biomass had been registered in strata (00–40 e 40–80cm) during the dry season, with a greater contribution by Bostrychia calliptera e Bostrychia tenella species.     Spatial and seasonal variation of microphytoplankton community and the correlation with environmental parameters in a hypereutrophic tropical estuary - Maranhão - Brazil

    The Bacanga River Estuary has a hydrodynamic behavior and its tidal flow is limited by a dam. It is considered as a hypertrophic environment that receives daily high loads of domestic sewage without treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the spatial and temporal variation of phytoplankton community and its relationship with environmental parameters. Bi-monthly sampling campaigns were carried out at six fixed sites between 2012 and 2013. Physical-chemical and biological parameters were collected (chlorophyll a, phytoplankton composition and abundance) to perform the statistical correlations. The results indicate that phytoplankton community is mostly represented by diatoms, with Skeletonema costatum being the dominant species responsible for bloom in April and June of 2012. The dominance of this species is related to the high silicate concentrations, pH and turbidity. Other blooms events as well as the Euglena gracilis and Chlamydomonas sp. were recorded in February 2013, when the total phosphorus concentrations were high and the dissolved oxygen concentrations were higher. Dinoflagellates, cyanobacteria and diatom Thallassiosira sp. were widely distributed in the dry period and highly correlated with salinity, water transparency and nutrients.     São Marcos Bay is an estuarine complex with semidiurnal tides that can reach more than 7 m during equinoctial spring tides. It is situated in the second largest Brazilian coastline and is subjected to continuous human activities holding an important port complex of Latin America. In order to contribute to the knowledge about the structure of the phytoplankton in a macrotidal systems, this study aims to evaluate the phytoplankton community and its relationship with environmental conditions in the São Marcos Bay. Five surveys in 2010 and 2011 were carried out on four sampling points during the rainy and dry seasons. Samples were taken during the flood and ebb phases at neap tides. Hydrological parameters were correlated with biological data (phytoplankton composition, abundance and biomass) using statistical analysis. The phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) characterized the bay as quite productive (10.43±7.62 mg m-3) with the nanophytoplankton as the dominant fraction. Seasonal variation was observed in phytoplankton abundance with higher values (34,262±18,422 cells L-1) in the rainy season. Diatoms were the most important phytoplankton group, pointing out Nitzschia sp., Diploneis weissflogii and Synedra sp. as the dominant species. This study revealed that the composition of phytoplankton community was mainly influenced by the local dynamics, governed by macrotides, and precipitation regime that mostly contributed to the seasonal fluctuations of the environmental conditions, such as salinity, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients
