    The Two-Component Virial Theorem and the Physical Properties of Stellar Systems

    Motivated by present indirect evidences that galaxies are surrounded by dark matter halos, we investigate whether their physical properties can be described by a formulation of the virial theorem which explicitly takes into account the gravitational potential term representing the interaction of the dark halo with the barionic or luminous component. Our analysis shows that the application of such a ``two-component virial theorem'' not only accounts for the scaling relations displayed, in particular, by elliptical galaxies, but also for the observed properties of all virialized stellar systems, ranging from globular clusters to galaxy clusters.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX, corrected few typos.     "Fundamental-Plane"-Like Relations From Collisionless Stellar Dynamics: A Comparison of Mergers and Collapses

    We present a new set of dissipationless N-body simulations aiming to better understand the pure dynamical aspects of the ``Fundamental Plane'' (FP) of elliptical galaxies. We have extended our previous hierarchical merger scheme by considering the Hernquist profile for the initial galaxy model. Two-component Hernquist galaxy models were also used to study the effect of massive dark halos on the end-products characteristics. We have also performed new collapse simulations including initial spin. We found that the one-component Hernquist mergers give results similar to those found for the one-component King models, namely both were able to build-up small scatter FP-like correlations with slopes consistent with what is found for the near-infrared FP of nearby galaxies. The two-component models also reproduce a FP-like correlation, but with a significantly steeper slope. This is in agreement with what has been found for elliptical galaxies at higher redshift (0.1 << z << 0.6). We discuss some structural properties of the simulated galaxies and their ability to build-up FP-like correlations. We confirm that collapses generally do not follow a FP-like correlation regardless of the initial spin. We suggest that the evolution of gradients in the gravitational field of the merging galaxies may be the main ingredient dictating the final non-homology property of the end products.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, uses mn2e.cls.     Stellar Population Properties of ETGs in Compact Groups of Galaxies

    We present results on the study of the stellar population in Early-Type galaxies (ETGs) belonging to 151 Compact Groups (CGs). We also selected a field sample composed of 846 ETGs to investigate environmental effects on galaxy evolution. We find that the dependences of mean stellar ages, [Z/H] and [α\alpha/Fe] on central stellar velocity dispersion are similar, regardless where the ETG resides, CGs or field. When compared to the sample of centrals and satellites from the literature, we find that ETGs in GCs behave similarly to centrals, especially those embedded in low-mass haloes (Mh<1012.5MM_{h} < 10^ {12.5}M_{\odot}). Except for the low-mass limit, where field galaxies present a Starforming signature, not seen in CGs, the ionization agent of the gas in CG and field galaxies seem to be similar and due to hot, evolved low-mass stars. However, field ETGs present an excess of Hα\alpha emission relative to ETGs in CGs. Additionally, we performed a dynamical analysis, which shows that CGs present a bimodality in the group velocity dispersion distribution - a high and low-σ\sigma mode. Our results indicate that high-σ\sigma groups have a smaller fraction of spirals, shorter crossing times, and a more luminous population of galaxies than the low σ\sigma groups. It is important to emphasize that our findings point to a small environmental impact on galaxies located in CGs. The only evidence we find is the change in gas content, suggesting environmentally-driven gas loss.Comment: 21 pages, 18 Figure

    The Nature of the Activity in Hickson Compact Groups of Galaxies

    We present the results of the spectral classification of the 82 brightest galaxies in a sample of 17 compact groups. We verify that the AGNs are preferentially located in the most early-type and luminous galaxies of the groups, as is usually observed in the field. But these AGNs also appear to be systematically concentrated towards the central parts of the groups. Our observations suggest a correlation between activity types, morphologies and densities of galaxies in the compact groups.     Effect of artesunate-mefloquine fixed-dose combination in malaria transmission in amazon basin communities

    Background: Studies in South-East Asia have suggested that early diagnosis and treatment with artesunate (AS) and mefloquine (MQ) combination therapy may reduce the transmission of Plasmodium falciparum malaria and the progression of MQ resistance. Methods: The effectiveness of a fixed-dose combination of AS and MQ (ASMQ) in reducing malaria transmission was tested in isolated communities of the Jurua valley in the Amazon region. Priority municipalities within the Brazilian Legal Amazon area were selected according to pre-specified criteria. Routine national malaria control programmatic procedures were followed. Existing health structures were reinforced and health care workers were trained to treat with ASMQ all confirmed falciparum malaria cases that match inclusion criteria. A local pharmacovigilance structure was implemented. Incidence of malaria and hospitalizations were recorded two years before, during, and after the fixed-dose ASMQ intervention. In total, between July 2006 and December 2008, 23,845 patients received ASMQ. Two statistical modelling approaches were applied to monthly time series of P. falciparum malaria incidence rates, P. falciparum/Plasmodium vivax infection ratio, and malaria hospital admissions rates. All the time series ranged from January 2004 to December 2008, whilst the intervention period span from July 2006 to December 2008. Results: The ASMQ intervention had a highly significant impact on the mean level of each time series, adjusted for trend and season, of 0.34 (95% CI 0.20 - 0.58) for the P. falciparum malaria incidence rates, 0.67 (95% CI 0.50 - 0.89) for the P. falciparum/P. vivax infection ratio, and 0.53 (95% CI 0.41 - 0.69) for the hospital admission rates. There was also a significant change in the seasonal (or monthly) pattern of the time series before and after intervention, with the elimination of the malaria seasonal peak in the rainy months of the years following the introduction of ASMQ. No serious adverse events relating to the use of fixed-dose ASMQ were reported. Conclusions: In the remote region of the Jurua valley, the early detection of malaria by health care workers and treatment with fixed-dose ASMQ was feasible and efficacious, and significantly reduced the incidence and morbidity of P. falciparum malaria.CNPq [309156/2007-6]PAHO/WHOBrazilian Ministry of HealthUSAI

    Cohort profile: the 100 million Brazilian cohort

    The creation of The 100 Million Brazilian Cohort was motivated by the availability of high quality but dispersed social and health databases in Brazil and the need to integrate data and evaluate the impact of policies aiming to improve the social determinants of health (e.g. social protection policies) on health outcomes, overall and in subgroups of interest in a dynamic cohort. • The baseline of The 100 Million Brazilian Cohort comprises 131 697 800 low-income individuals in 35 358 415 families from 2011 to 2018. The Cohort population is mostly composed of children and young adults, with a higher proportion of females than the general Brazilian population, who identify themselves as Brown and live in the urban area of the country. • Exposure to social protection and the follow-up of individuals are obtained through: (i) deterministic linkage using the Social Identification Number (NIS) to link the Cohort baseline to social protection programmes and to periodically renewed socioeconomic information in Cadatro U ́ nico datasets; and/or (ii) non-deterministic linkage using the CIDACS-RL non-deterministic linkage tool, to link the Cohort baseline to administrative health care datasets such as mortality (Mortality Information System, SIM), disease notification (Information System for Notifiable Diseases, SINAN), birth information (Live Birth Information System, SINASC) and nutrition status (Food and Nutrition Surveillance System, SISVAN). • So far, studies have used The 100 Million Brazilian Cohort to investigate the socioeconomic and demographic determinants of leprosy, leprosy treatment outcomes and low birthweight and to evaluate the impact of the Bolsa Familia Programme (BFP) on leprosy and child mortality. Other studies are now being conducted that are of utmost relevance to the health inequalities of Brazil and many low- and middle-income countries, and many research opportunities are being opened up with the linkage of a range of health outcomes

    Effects of Transcriptional Pausing on Gene Expression Dynamics

    Stochasticity in gene expression affects many cellular processes and is a source of phenotypic diversity between genetically identical individuals. Events in elongation, particularly RNA polymerase pausing, are a source of this noise. Since the rate and duration of pausing are sequence-dependent, this regulatory mechanism of transcriptional dynamics is evolvable. The dependency of pause propensity on regulatory molecules makes pausing a response mechanism to external stress. Using a delayed stochastic model of bacterial transcription at the single nucleotide level that includes the promoter open complex formation, pausing, arrest, misincorporation and editing, pyrophosphorolysis, and premature termination, we investigate how RNA polymerase pausing affects a gene's transcriptional dynamics and gene networks. We show that pauses' duration and rate of occurrence affect the bursting in RNA production, transcriptional and translational noise, and the transient to reach mean RNA and protein levels. In a genetic repressilator, increasing the pausing rate and the duration of pausing events increases the period length but does not affect the robustness of the periodicity. We conclude that RNA polymerase pausing might be an important evolvable feature of genetic networks
