Rapid Thermal Processing (RTP) of semiconductors in space
The progress achieved on the project entitled 'Rapid Thermal Processing of Semiconductors in Space' for a 12 month period of activity ending March 31, 1993 is summarized. The activity of this group is being performed under the direct auspices of the ROMPS program. The main objective of this program is to develop and demonstrate the use of advanced robotics in space with rapid thermal process (RTP) of semiconductors providing the test technology. Rapid thermal processing is an ideal processing step for demonstration purposes since it encompasses many of the characteristics of other processes used in solid state device manufacturing. Furthermore, a low thermal budget is becoming more important in existing manufacturing practice, while a low thermal budget is critical to successful processing in space. A secondary objective of this project is to determine the influence of microgravity on the rapid thermal process for a variety of operating modes. In many instances, this involves one or more fluid phases. The advancement of microgravity processing science is an important ancillary objective

Inhomogeneous charge textures stabilized by electron-phonon interactions in the t-J model
We study the effect of diagonal and off-diagonal electron-phonon coupling in
the ground state properties of the t-J model. Adiabatic and quantum phonons are
considered using Lanczos techniques. Charge tiles and stripe phases with mobile
holes (localized holes) are observed at intermediate (large) values of the
diagonal electron-phonon coupling. The stripes are stabilized by half-breathing
modes, while the tiles arise due to the development of extended breathing
modes. Off-diagonal terms destabilize the charge inhomogeneous structures with
mobile holes by renormalizing the diagonal coupling but do not produce new
phases. Buckling modes are also studied and they seem to induce a gradual phase
separation between hole rich and hole poor regions. The pairing correlations
are strongly suppressed when the holes are localized. However, in charge
inhomogeneous states with mobile holes no dramatic changes, compared with the
uniform state, are observed in the pairing correlations indicating that D-wave
pairing and moderate electron-phonon interactions can coexist.Comment: minor changes; to appear in Physical Review
Gas-Surface Dynamics and Profile Evolution during Etching of Silicon
Scattering of energetic F atoms on a fluorinated Si surface is studied by molecular beam methods. The energy transfer closely follows hard-sphere collision kinematics. Energy and angular distributions of unreacted F atoms suggest significant multiple-bounce scattering in addition to single-bounce scattering and trapping desorption. An empirical model of the atom-surface interaction dynamics is used in a Monte Carlo simulation of topography evolution during neutral beam etching of Si. Model predictions of profile phenomena are validated by experiments
Variable conductance heat pipe technology
Research and development programs in variable conductance heat pipe technology were conducted. The treatment has been comprehensive, involving theoretical and/or experimental studies in hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, heat transfer into and out of the pipe, fluid selection, and materials compatibility, in addition to the principal subject of variable conductance control techniques. Efforts were not limited to analytical work and laboratory experimentation, but extended to the development, fabrication and test of spacecraft hardware, culminating in the successful flight of the Ames Heat Pipe Experiment on the OAO-C spacecraft
Two Phase Collective Modes in Josephson Vortex Lattice in Intrinsic Josephson Junction BiSrCaCuO
Josephson plasma excitations in the high superconductor
BiSrCaCuO have been investigated in a wide microwave
frequency region (9.8 -- 75 GHz), in particular, in magnetic field applied
parallel to the plane of the single crystal. In sharp contrast to the case
for magnetic fields parallel to the c axis or tilted from the plane, it
was found that there are two kinds of resonance modes, which are split in
energy and possess two distinctly different magnetic field dependences. One
always lies higher in energy than the other and has a shallow minimum at about
0.8 kOe, then increases linearly with magnetic field. On the other hand,
another mode begins to appear only in a magnetic field (from a few kOe and
higher) and has a weakly decreasing tendency with increasing magnetic field. By
comparing with a recent theoretical model the higher energy mode can naturally
be attributed to the Josephson plasma resonance mode propagating along the
primitive reciprocal lattice vector of the Josephson vortex lattice, whereas
the lower frequency mode is assigned to the novel phase collective mode of the
Josephson vortex lattice, which has never been observed before.Comment: 11 pages and 10 figure
Pilot Human Factors in Stall/Spin Accidents of Supersonic Fighter Aircraft
A study has been made of pilot human factors related to stall/spin accidents of supersonic fighter aircraft. The military specifications for flight at high angles of attack are examined. Several pilot human factors problems related to stall/spin are discussed. These problems include (1) unsatisfactory nonvisual warning cues; (2) the inability of the pilot to quickly determine if the aircraft is spinning out of control, or to recognize the type of spin; (3) the inability of the pilot to decide on and implement the correct spin recovery technique; (4) the inability of the pilot to move, caused by high angular rotation; and (5) the tendency of pilots to wait too long in deciding to abandon the irrecoverable aircraft. Psycho-physiological phenomena influencing pilot's behavior in stall/spin situations include (1) channelization of sensory inputs, (2) limitations in precisely controlling several muscular inputs, (3) inaccurate judgment of elapsed time, and (4) disorientation of vestibulo-ocular inputs. Results are given of pilot responses to all these problems in the F14A, F16/AB, and F/A-18A aircraft. The use of departure spin resistance and automatic spin prevention systems incorporated on recent supersonic fighters are discussed. These systems should help to improve the stall/spin accident record with some compromise in maneuverability
