Representing Foreign Sounds: Greek Transcriptions of Egyptian Anthroponyms from 800 BC to 800 AD

    Get PDF
[EN]As precursors of Coptic writing, Greek transcriptions of Egyptian anthroponyms not only show phonetic and morphological features of ancient Egyptian words and reflect characteristic aspects of Koine Greek, but also, thanks to the notation of vowels, which are not written in Egyptian texts previous to the Coptic period, they reveal some dialectal traces and even complete isoglosses of the latest period of the Egyptian language. However, the number of Egyptian anthroponyms in Greek transcription studied is not wide, and the interpretation of some of them is uncertain. The aim of this research is to analyse, thanks to the Trismegistos database ‒ developed in the department of Ancient History of KU Leuven ‒, the linguistic elements or ‘formants’ composing the different Egyptian proper names attested in Greek transcription, along with the linguistic features of both Greek and Egyptian languages they reveal

The Quantum Echo of the Early Universe

We show that the fluctuations of quantum fields as seen by late comoving observers are significantly influenced by the history of the early Universe, and therefore they transmit information about the nature of spacetime in timescales when quantum gravitational effects were non-negligible. We discuss how this may be observable even nowadays, and thus used to build falsifiability tests of quantum gravity theories.Comment: 3 pages. 2 Figures. Proceedings Theory Canada 9. We analyze the implications of the violations of the strong Huygens principle in the transmission of information from the early universe to the current era via massless fields. We show that much more information reaches us through timelike channels (not mediated by real photons) than it is carried by rays of light, which are usually regarded as the only carriers of information.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. The space journey game: An intergenerational pervasive experience

    Get PDF
There is a need to re-design the entertainment systems for the older adults, incorporating the population of this age group into the digital culture. With this aim in mind this work presents an intergenerational experience carried out in an Interactive Space where tangible and gestures interaction are used to participate in pervasive gaming experiences. The experience makes use of a game initially designed just for children but in a very flexible way so that it can be tailored to different players'' characteristics. Family groups made up of one or two grandparents and one or two grandchildren have played together The Fantastic Journey fulfilling all the missions either on tangible tabletops, just moving around the space or interacting by gestures. The experience was positively valued by both age groups; they were indeed happy with the opportunity of playing together in a challenging game. Nevertheless, the difficulty of designing engaging experiences for both age groups points to a challenging research area

Analyzing Profitability and Discount Rates for Solar PV Plants. A Spanish Case

[EN] The widespread use of renewable energy sources and the growing concern about climate change, together with Spain's exceptional weather and solar radiation conditions, have led to an increase in the use of photovoltaics for energy production in the country. Solar power generation has been tightly regulated, although the legal framework has changed frequently over the years. When assessing the potential financial performance of any business venture, legal as well as financial aspects must be considered, but a critical factor is the discount rate used, which must reflect the company's capital cost. Other factors are the period of interest, the firm's activity, market risk, and the level of debt of firms in the sector. The main objective of this study is thus to estimate the discount rate for companies using photovoltaics to produce solar power. We calculate it by employing two financial techniques: capital asset pricing model and historical return analysis. We then evaluate the investment in a photovoltaic plant with a capacity of 5000 kW located in eastern Spain, assuming it started its activity in different years which coincide with changes in the regulatory framework. The results show the relevance of the initial outlay costs for the profitability of photovoltaic power plants. The translation has been funded by Facultad de Administracion y Direccion de Empresas (Universitat Politecnica de Valencia).Guaita-Pradas, I.; Blasco Ruíz, A. Enfermedad de Jacob asociada con el síndrome de disfunción de la articulación temporomandibular: presentación de un caso

    Get PDF
Jacob´s disease is regarded a rare condition in which a joint formation is established between an enlarged mandibular coronoid process and the inner aspect of the zygomatic body. Chronic temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disk displacement has been proposed as etiological factor of coronoid process enlargement. We present a 23-year-old woman with long-standing TMJ dysfunction and restricted interincisal opening, who developed a progressive zygomatic assymetry. The patient underwent treatment by intraoral coronoidectomy and homolateral TMJ arthroscopy in the same surgery. The histopathological diagnosis of the coronoid sample was cartilage-capped exostoses with presence of articular fibrous cartilage. Although the low prevalence of this entity, it should be considered as a possible diagnosis in patients with progressive limitation of mouth opening, although a TMJ syndrome may be present as a cause of this entity

Estudio cualitativo

    Get PDF
In many courses, the way to implement the ‘flipped classroom’ methodology takes recorded video lectures as reference material. In this case, a group of lectures about educational software, recording the computer screen (screencast) has been used, in order to allow students to spend the practice sessions time solving problems with the cited software. The study described below has been done following a qualitative methodology, using participant observation and individual interviews to inquire about the teaching-learning process of the students in four categories: effort/benefit, difficulty, usefulness and satisfaction. These categories have been defined starting from the scientific bibliography review and the observation process. As a result, it has been observed that, in spite of the several distinct patterns found in the way and time exposed to the videos, the majority of students made positive comments about their potential to better solve in-classroom problems. Besides, they noticed improvements in the interaction with students and teachers when they needed to pose questions or doubts. Finally, they manifested that the experience should be applied to every practice session.
