Prevalence of Trichomonas Vaginalis in Women with Precancerous and Indeterminate Lesions at Cytology
Trichomonas vaginalis was investigated by cervicovaginal cytology in pregnant and non-pregnant women receiving care at two public referral hospitals in Goiacircnia, Goias, Brazil. The frequency of Trichomonas vaginalis infection, the correlation between its presence and a diagnosis of precancerous and indeterminate lesions, and potential inflammatory changes in the vaginal epithelial cells in the presence of the parasite were evaluated.Overall, 359 Papanicolaou smears from 157 pregnant women and 202 non-pregnant women were evaluated.nbsp The principal inflammatory changes associated with the presence of T. vaginalis were registered.A second examiner reevaluated the slides. T. vaginalis infection was found in 46% of the slides, withprecancerous lesionsbeing found in 4.2% of the infected women.nbsp Perinuclear halos were the most common inflammatory change associated with the presence of the parasite.nbsp Adherence of the parasite to the vaginal epithelial cellsand ill-defined cytoplasmic borders were more commonly found in the group of pregnant patients.nbsp The prevalence of T. vaginalis was high in the present study, both in the pregnant and non-pregnant women.nbsp The socioeconomic level of the study population and the examinersrsquo experience played a particularly relevant role in the results obtained

Stochastic Opinion Formation in Scale-Free Networks
The dynamics of opinion formation in large groups of people is a complex
non-linear phenomenon whose investigation is just at the beginning. Both
collective behaviour and personal view play an important role in this
mechanism. In the present work we mimic the dynamics of opinion formation of a
group of agents, represented by two state , as a stochastic response of
each of them to the opinion of his/her neighbours in the social network and to
feedback from the average opinion of the whole. In the light of recent studies,
a scale-free Barab\'asi-Albert network has been selected to simulate the
topology of the interactions. A turbulent-like dynamics, characterized by an
intermittent behaviour, is observed for a certain range of the model
parameters. The problem of uncertainty in decision taking is also addressed
both from a topological point of view, using random and targeted removal of
agents from the network, and by implementing a three state model, where the
third state, zero, is related to the information available to each agent.
Finally, the results of the model are tested against the best known network of
social interactions: the stock market. A time series of daily closures of the
Dow Jones index has been used as an indicator of the possible applicability of
our model in the financial context. Good qualitative agreement is found.Comment: 24 pages and 13 figures, Physical Review E, in pres

Universal features in the growth dynamics of complex organizations
We analyze the fluctuations in the gross domestic product (GDP) of 152
countries for the period 1950--1992. We find that (i) the distribution of
annual growth rates for countries of a given GDP decays with ``fatter'' tails
than for a Gaussian, and (ii) the width of the distribution scales as a power
law of GDP with a scaling exponent . Both findings are in
surprising agreement with results on firm growth. These results are consistent
with the hypothesis that the evolution of organizations with complex structure
is governed by similar growth mechanisms.Comment: 4 pages, 7 ps figures, using Latex2e with epsf rotate and multicol

A New Model for the Spiral Structure of the Galaxy. Superposition of 2+4-armed patterns
We investigate the possibility of describing the spiral pattern of the Milky
Way in terms of a model of superposition 2- and 4-armed wave harmonics (the
simplest description, besides pure modes). Two complementary methods are used:
a study of stellar kinematics, and direct tracing of positions of spiral arms.
In the first method, the parameters of the galactic rotation curve and the free
parameters of the spiral density waves were obtained from Cepheid kinematics,
under different assumptions. To turn visible the structure corresponding to
these models, we computed the evolution of an ensemble of N-particles,
simulating the ISM clouds, in the perturbed galactic gravitational field. In
the second method, we present a new analysis of the longitude-velocity (l-v)
diagram of the sample of galactic HII regions, converting positions of spiral
arms in the galactic plane into locii of these arms in the l-v diagram. Both
methods indicate that the ``self-sustained'' model, in which the 2-armed and
4-armed mode have different pitch angles (6 arcdeg and 12 arcdeg, respectively)
is a good description of the disk structure. An important conclusion is that
the Sun happens to be practically at the corotation circle. As an additional
result of our study, we propose an independent test for localization of the
corotation circle in a spiral galaxy: a gap in the radial distribution of
interstellar gas has to be observed in the corotation region.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, Latex, uses aas2pp4.st
Universal macroscopic background formation in surface super-roughening
We study a class of super-rough growth models whose structure factor
satisfies the Family-Vicsek scaling. We demonstrate that a macroscopic
background spontaneously develops in the local surface profile, which dominates
the scaling of the local surface width and the height-difference. The shape of
the macroscopic background takes a form of a finite-order polynomial whose
order is decided from the value of the global roughness exponent. Once the
macroscopic background is subtracted, the width of the resulting local surface
profile satisfies the Family-Vicsek scaling. We show that this feature is
universal to all super-rough growth models, and we also discuss the difference
between the macroscopic background formation and the pattern formation in other
models.Comment: 5 pages, LaTex, 1 figure, minor correction

Corotation: its influence on the chemical abundance pattern of the Galaxy
A simple theory for the chemical enrichment of the Galaxy which takes into
account the effects of spiral arms on heavy elements output was developed. In
the framework of the model with the corotation close to the position of the Sun
in the Galaxy the observed abundance features are explained.Comment: LaTeX, 6 pages, 5 jpg figures, uses aastex.sty, submitted to ApJ Let
