Extending the scope of microscopic solvability: Combination of the Kruskal-Segur method with Zauderer decomposition

Successful applications of the Kruskal-Segur approach to interfacial pattern formation have remained limited due to the necessity of an integral formulation of the problem. This excludes nonlinear bulk equations, rendering convection intractable. Combining the method with Zauderer's asymptotic decomposition scheme, we are able to strongly extend its scope of applicability and solve selection problems based on free boundary formulations in terms of partial differential equations alone. To demonstrate the technique, we give the first analytic solution of the problem of velocity selection for dendritic growth in a forced potential flow.Comment: Submitted to Europhys. One-Dimensional Ablation with Pyrolysis Gas Flow Using a Full Newton's Method and Finite Control Volume Procedure

    Get PDF
The development and verification of a one-dimensional material thermal response code with ablation is presented. The implicit time integrator, control volume finite element spatial discretization, and Newton's method for nonlinear iteration on the entire system of residual equations have been implemented and verified for the thermochemical ablation of internally decomposing materials. This study is a continuation of the work presented in "One-Dimensional Ablation with Pyrolysis Gas Flow Using a Full Newton's Method and Finite Control Volume Procedure" (AIAA-2006-2910), which described the derivation, implementation, and verification of the constant density solid energy equation terms and boundary conditions. The present study extends the model to decomposing materials including decomposition kinetics, pyrolysis gas flow through the porous char layer, and a mixture (solid and gas) energy equation. Verification results are presented for the thermochemical ablation of a carbon-phenolic ablator which involves the solution of the entire system of governing equations

A simulation system for behaviour evaluation of off-rooad mobile robots

Abstract: This study deals with optimization of planetary rover traversability over challenging outdoor terrains. In this aim, it is necessary to simulate rover behaviour on soft soil with a high degree of realism. The paper describes a simulation system for mobile robots evolving on natural and unstructured surfaces. This simulator integrates the whole dynamics of the multibody systems and complex interactions with soft ground as well as control schemes.

‘Chemlali Mhassen’: New olive cultivar derived from crossbreeding program in Tunisia with high oil quality and productivity

    Get PDF
The new olive cultivar ‘Chemlali Mhassen’ was derived from the autopollination of the Tunisian oil cultivar ‘Chemlali Sfax’. The main morphological differences between the two cultivars were observed on the endocarp (symmetry, position of maximum diameter, apex, base and surface). On the agronomic plan, this cultivar is distinguishable from the original cultivar due to its medium earliness of bearing (4 years), medium alternate bearing (0.44), early ripening, moderate sensitivity to verticillium and its high olive production per tree (7.7 kg). Concerning oil quality, ‘Chemlali Mhassen’ had higher performances than the original cultivar for oleic acid content (70 to 77 %) and lower contents for palmitic acid (9.2 to 11.5 %) and linoleic acid (9.3 to 14.7 %). Similar performances were recorded between the new and the original cultivars for rhizogenesis behavior and pollen compatibility

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERIZATION OF SELECTED CLONES OF TUNISIAN TABLE OLIVE (Olea europaea. L) VARIETY ‘MESKI’

The clonal selection carried out within the Tunisian olive table variety Meski allowed to select three more productive clones. The agronomic characterization of these clones was carried out during four years (2012 to 2015). The analysis of variance revealed that the clonal effect was not significant for the fruit pomology indicating a high homogeneity of the selected clones and significant only for olive production. The variation in endocarp weight and fruit specific density (weight/volume) was very low between years and these parameters could be considered as characterization criteria for the Meski variety. The correlations between the pomological parameters show that the variations are proportional between the fruit and the pulp weights and the volume. Olive production is negatively correlated with fruit and pulp weights. The hierarchical classification shows that the three clones are grouped mainly according to the year. Principal component analysis shows that the first component accounts for 66% of the total variability and is positively correlated with fruit and pulp weights and volume

A moving boundary model motivated by electric breakdown: II. Initial value problem

An interfacial approximation of the streamer stage in the evolution of sparks and lightning can be formulated as a Laplacian growth model regularized by a 'kinetic undercooling' boundary condition. Using this model we study both the linearized and the full nonlinear evolution of small perturbations of a uniformly translating circle. Within the linear approximation analytical and numerical results show that perturbations are advected to the back of the circle, where they decay. An initially analytic interface stays analytic for all finite times, but singularities from outside the physical region approach the interface for t→∞t\to\infty, which results in some anomalous relaxation at the back of the circle. For the nonlinear evolution numerical results indicate that the circle is the asymptotic attractor for small perturbations, but larger perturbations may lead to branching. We also present results for more general initial shapes, which demonstrate that regularization by kinetic undercooling cannot guarantee smooth interfaces globally in time.Comment: 44 pages, 18 figures, paper submitted to Physica

Chemometric classification of new Olea europaea L. cultivars developed through a crossbreeding program in Tunisia

    Get PDF
Five new olive (Olea europaea L.) cultivars issued from a Tunisian breeding program were released in 2017. This program aimed to improve the oil quality of the local cultivar ‘Chemlali Sfax’ which had mainly low oleic acid content. A wide genetic diversity was observed within the new cultivars which differ from the typical cultivar. The results of the morphological evaluation of the leaf, fruit and stone showed mainly a significant increase of the fruit size (medium) and the appearance of new morphological states for the fruit and the stone

Fission of a multiphase membrane tube

A common mechanism for intracellular transport is the use of controlled deformations of the membrane to create spherical or tubular buds. While the basic physical properties of homogeneous membranes are relatively well-known, the effects of inhomogeneities within membranes are very much an active field of study. Membrane domains enriched in certain lipids in particular are attracting much attention, and in this Letter we investigate the effect of such domains on the shape and fate of membrane tubes. Recent experiments have demonstrated that forced lipid phase separation can trigger tube fission, and we demonstrate how this can be understood purely from the difference in elastic constants between the domains. Moreover, the proposed model predicts timescales for fission that agree well with experimental findings

    Surface Instability in Windblown Sand

We investigate the formation of ripples on the surface of windblown sand based on the one-dimensional model of Nishimori and Ouchi [Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 197 (1993)], which contains the processes of saltation and grain relaxation. We carry out a nonlinear analysis to determine the propagation speed of the restabilized ripple patterns, and the amplitudes and phases of their first, second, and third harmonics. The agreement between the theory and our numerical simulations is excellent near the onset of instability. We also determine the Eckhaus boundary, outside which the steady ripple patterns are unstable.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figure
