Postnatal β2 adrenergic treatment improves insulin sensitivity in lambs with IUGR but not persistent defects in pancreatic islets or skeletal muscle
Placental insufficiency causes intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and disturbances in glucose homeostasis with associated β adrenergic receptor (ADRβ) desensitization. Our objectives were to measure insulin-sensitive glucose metabolism in neonatal lambs with IUGR and to determine whether daily treatment with ADRβ2 agonist and ADRβ1/β3 antagonists for 1 month normalizes their glucose metabolism. Growth, glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) and glucose utilization rates (GURs) were measured in control lambs, IUGR lambs and IUGR lambs treated with adrenergic receptor modifiers: clenbuterol atenolol and SR59230A (IUGR-AR). In IUGR lambs, islet insulin content and GSIS were less than in controls; however, insulin sensitivity and whole-bodyGUR were not different from controls.Of importance, ADRβ2 stimulation with β1/β3 inhibition increases both insulin sensitivity and whole-body glucose utilization in IUGR lambs. In IUGR and IUGR-AR lambs, hindlimb GURs were greater but fractional glucose oxidation rates and ex vivo skeletal muscle glucose oxidation rates were lower than controls. Glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) was lower in IUGR and IUGR-AR skeletal muscle than in controls but GLUT1 was greater in IUGR-AR. ADRβ2, insulin receptor, glycogen content and citrate synthase activity were similar among groups. In IUGR and IUGR-AR lambs heart rates were greater, which was independent of cardiac ADRβ1 activation. We conclude that targeted ADRβ2 stimulation improved whole-body insulin sensitivity but minimally affected defects in GSIS and skeletal muscle glucose oxidation. We show that risk factors for developing diabetes are independent of postnatal catch-up growth in IUGR lambs as early as 1 month of age and are inherent to the islets and myocytes
All-sky Galactic radiation at 45 MHz and spectral index between 45 and 408 MHz
Aims: We study the Galactic large-scale synchrotron emission by generating a
reliable all-sky spectral index map and temperature map at 45 MHz. Methods: We
use our observations, the published all-sky map at 408 MHz, and a
bibliographical compilation to produce a map corrected for zero-level offset
and extragalactic contribution. Results: We present full sky maps of the
Galactic emission at 45 MHz and the Galactic spectral index between 45 and 408
MHz with an angular resolution of 5\degs. The spectral index varies between 2.1
and 2.7, reaching values below 2.5 at low latitude because of thermal free-free
absorption and its maximum in the zone next to the Northern Spur.Comment: A&A accepte
The evolution of a network of cosmic string loops
We set up and analyse a model for the non-equilibrium evolution of a network
of cosmic strings initially containing only loops and no infinite strings. Due
to this particular initial condition, our analytical approach differs
significantly from existing ones. We describe the average properties of the
network in terms of the distribution function n(l,t) dl, the average number of
loops per unit volume with physical length between l and l + dl at time t. The
dynamical processes which change the length of loops are then estimated and an
equation, which we call the `rate equation', is derived for (dn/dt). In a
non-expanding universe, the loops should reach the equilibrium distribution
predicted by string statistical mechanics. Analysis of the rate equation gives
results consistent with this. We then study the rate equation in an expanding
universe and suggest that three different final states are possible for the
evolving loop network, each of which may well be realised for some initial
conditions. If the initial energy density in loops in the radiation era is low,
then the loops rapidly disappear. For large initial energy densities, we expect
that either infinite strings are formed or that the loops tend towards a
scaling solution in the radiation era and then rapidly disappear in the matter
era. Such a scenario may be relevant given recent work highlighting the

"Now he walks and walks, as if he didn't have a home where he could eat": food, healing, and hunger in Quechua narratives of madness
In the Quechua-speaking peasant communities of southern Peru, mental disorder is understood less as individualized pathology and more as a disturbance in family and social relationships. For many Andeans, food and feeding are ontologically fundamental to such relationships. This paper uses data from interviews and participant observation in a rural province of Cuzco to explore the significance of food and hunger in local discussions of madness. Carers’ narratives, explanatory models, and theories of healing all draw heavily from idioms of food sharing and consumption in making sense of affliction, and these concepts structure understandings of madness that differ significantly from those assumed by formal mental health services. Greater awareness of the salience of these themes could strengthen the input of psychiatric and psychological care with this population and enhance knowledge of the alternative treatments that they use. Moreover, this case provides lessons for the global mental health movement on the importance of openness to the ways in which indigenous cultures may construct health, madness, and sociality. Such local meanings should be considered by mental health workers delivering services in order to provide care that can adjust to the alternative ontologies of sufferers and carers
The JCMT Gould Belt Survey: Evidence for radiative heating in Serpens MWC 297 and its influence on local star formation
We present SCUBA-2 450micron and 850micron observations of the Serpens MWC
297 region, part of the JCMT Gould Belt Survey of nearby star-forming regions.
Simulations suggest that radiative feedback influences the star-formation
process and we investigate observational evidence for this by constructing
temperature maps. Maps are derived from the ratio of SCUBA-2 fluxes and a two
component model of the JCMT beam for a fixed dust opacity spectral index of
beta = 1.8. Within 40 of the B1.5Ve Herbig star MWC 297, the submillimetre
fluxes are contaminated by free-free emission with a spectral index of
1.03+-0.02, consistent with an ultra-compact HII region and polar winds/jets.
Contamination accounts for 73+-5 per cent and 82+-4 per cent of peak flux at
450micron and 850micron respectively. The residual thermal disk of the star is
almost undetectable at these wavelengths. Young Stellar Objects are confirmed
where SCUBA-2 850micron clumps identified by the fellwalker algorithm coincide
with Spitzer Gould Belt Survey detections. We identify 23 objects and use Tbol
to classify nine YSOs with masses 0.09 to 5.1 Msun. We find two Class 0, one
Class 0/I, three Class I and three Class II sources. The mean temperature is
15+-2K for the nine YSOs and 32+-4K for the 14 starless clumps. We observe a
starless clump with an abnormally high mean temperature of 46+-2K and conclude
that it is radiatively heated by the star MWC 297. Jeans stability provides
evidence that radiative heating by the star MWC 297 may be suppressing clump

A 3D view of the outflow in the Orion Molecular Cloud 1 (OMC-1)
The fast outflow emerging from a region associated with massive star
formation in the Orion Molecular Cloud 1 (OMC-1), located behind the Orion
Nebula, appears to have been set in motion by an explosive event. Here we study
the structure and dynamics of outflows in OMC-1. We combine radial velocity and
proper motion data for near-IR emission of molecular hydrogen to obtain the
first 3-dimensional (3D) structure of the OMC-1 outflow. Our work illustrates a
new diagnostic tool for studies of star formation that will be exploited in the
near future with the advent of high spatial resolution spectro-imaging in
particular with data from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). We use
published radial and proper motion velocities obtained from the shock-excited
vibrational emission in the H2 v=1-0 S(1) line at 2.122 m obtained with
the GriF instrument on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, the Apache Point
Observatory, the Anglo-Australian Observatory and the Subaru Telescope. These
data give the 3D velocity of ejecta yielding a 3D reconstruction of the
outflows. This allows one to view the material from different vantage points in
space giving considerable insight into the geometry. Our analysis indicates
that the ejection occurred <720 years ago from a distorted ring-like structure
of ~15" (6000 AU) in diameter centered on the proposed point of close encounter
of the stars BN, source I and maybe also source n. We propose a simple model
involving curvature of shock trajectories in magnetic fields through which the
origin of the explosion and the centre defined by extrapolated proper motions

This article materially ‘descends’ into a selection of prior media forms that make up the genealogy of the hard disk drive (HDD) to challenge our reliance on conceptual misrepresentations. This material analysis is used to situate digital media in a genealogy of prior media forms, to enrich our understanding of how media’s affordances arise from the interplay of both formal and forensic materiality and to demonstrate the value of reintegrating materiality back into the study of media

The causal relationship between gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomisation study
Background:
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is associated with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in observational studies. It is not known if this association arises because GORD causes IPF or because IPF causes GORD, or because of confounding by factors, such as smoking, associated with both GORD and IPF. We used bidirectional Mendelian randomisation (MR), where genetic variants are used as instrumental variables to address issues of confounding and reverse causation, to examine how, if at all, GORD and IPF are causally related.
Methods:
A bidirectional two-sample MR was performed to estimate the causal effect of GORD on IPF risk and of IPF on GORD risk, using genetic data from the largest GORD (78 707 cases and 288 734 controls) and IPF (4125 cases and 20 464 controls) genome-wide association meta-analyses currently available.
Results:
GORD increased the risk of IPF, with an OR of 1.6 (95% CI 1.04–2.49; p=0.032). There was no evidence of a causal effect of IPF on the risk of GORD, with an OR of 0.999 (95% CI 0.997–1.000; p=0.245).
Conclusions:
We found that GORD increases the risk of IPF, but found no evidence that IPF increases the risk of GORD. GORD should be considered in future studies of IPF risk and interest in it as a potential therapeutic target should be renewed. The mechanisms underlying the effect of GORD on IPF should also be investigated
An X-ray Spectral Survey of Radio-Loud AGN With ASCA
We present a uniform and systematic analysis of the 0.6-10 keV X-ray spectra
of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) observed by ASCA. The sample 10
BLRGs, 5 QSRs, 9 NLRGs, and 10 RGs. At soft X-rays, about half of the NLRGs and
all of the RGs exhibit a thermal plasma component, with a bimodal distribution
of temperatures and luminosities, suggesting an origin either in a surrounding
cluster or loose group or in a hot corona. At energies above 2 keV, a hard
power-law component is detected in 90% of cases. The power-law photon indices
and luminosities in BLRGs, QSRs, and NLRGs are similar, consistent with
orientation-based unification schemes. Significant excess cold absorption is
detected in most NLRGs, but also in some BLRGS and QSRs, which was somewhat
unexpected. In contrast to Seyfert galaxies, only one object showss the
signature of a warm absorber. The nuclear X-ray luminosity is correlated with
the luminosity of the [O III] emission line, the FIR emission at 12 microns,
and the lobe radio power at 5 GHz. The Fe K line is detected in 50% of BLRGs,
one QSR, and a handful of NLRGs. This sample also includes 6 Weak Line Radio
Galaxies (WLRGs). Their spectra WLRGs can be generally decomposed into a soft
thermal component with hard absrorbed power-law component, which is
significantly flatter than any other radio-loud AGNs. Their intrinsic
luminosities are two orders of magnitude lower than in other sources of the
sample. An interesting possibility is that WLRGs represent an extreme
population of radio galaxies in which the central black hole is accreting at a
