Effective boost and "point-form" approach
Triangle Feynman diagrams can be considered as describing form factors of
states bound by a zero-range interaction. These form factors are calculated for
scalar particles and compared to point-form and non-relativistic results. By
examining the expressions of the complete calculation in different frames, we
obtain an effective boost transformation which can be compared to the
relativistic kinematical one underlying the present point-form calculations, as
well as to the Galilean boost. The analytic expressions obtained in this simple
model allow a qualitative check of certain results obtained in similar studies.
In particular, a mismatch is pointed out between recent practical applications
of the point-form approach and the one originally proposed by Dirac.Comment: revised version as accepted for publicatio
Chemical telemetry of OH observed to measure interstellar magnetic fields
We present models for the chemistry in gas moving towards the ionization
front of an HII region. When it is far from the ionization front, the gas is
highly depleted of elements more massive than helium. However, as it approaches
the ionization front, ices are destroyed and species formed on the grain
surfaces are injected into the gas phase. Photodissociation removes gas phase
molecular species as the gas flows towards the ionization front. We identify
models for which the OH column densities are comparable to those measured in
observations undertaken to study the magnetic fields in star forming regions
and give results for the column densities of other species that should be
abundant if the observed OH arises through a combination of the liberation of
H2O from surfaces and photodissociation. They include CH3OH, H2CO, and H2S.
Observations of these other species may help establish the nature of the OH
spatial distribution in the clouds, which is important for the interpretation
of the magnetic field results.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, accepted by Astrophysics and Space Scienc
Scattering of particles by neutron stars: Time-evolutions for axial perturbations
The excitation of the axial quasi-normal modes of a relativistic star by
scattered particles is studied by evolving the time dependent perturbation
equations. This work is the first step towards the understanding of more
complicated perturbative processes, like the capture or the scattering of
particles by rotating stars. In addition, it may serve as a test for the
results of the full nonlinear evolution of binary systems.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, Phys. Rev. D in pres
Form factors in RQM approaches: constraints from space-time translations
Different relativistic quantum mechanics approaches have recently been used
to calculate properties of various systems, form factors in particular. It is
known that predictions, which most often rely on a single-particle current
approximation, can lead to predictions with a very large range. It was shown
that accounting for constraints related to space-time translations could
considerably reduce this range. It is shown here that predictions can be made
identical for a large range of cases. These ones include the following
approaches: instant form, front form, and "point-form" in arbitrary momentum
configurations and a dispersion-relation approach which can be considered as
the approach which the other ones should converge to. This important result
supposes both an implementation of the above constraints and an appropriate
single-particle-like current. The change of variables that allows one to
establish the equivalence of the approaches is given. Some points are
illustrated with numerical results for the ground state of a system consisting
of scalar particles.Comment: 37 pages, 7 figures; further comments in ps 16 and 19; further

Sintering Kinetics of Plasma-Sprayed Zirconia TBCs
A model of the sintering exhibited by EB-PVD TBCs, based on principles of free energy minimization, was recently published by Hutchinson et al. In the current paper, this approach is applied to sintering of plasma-sprayed TBCs and comparisons are made with experimental results. Predictions of through-thickness shrinkage and changing pore surface area are compared with experimental data obtained by dilatometry and BET analysis respectively. The sensitivity of the predictions to initial pore architecture and material properties are assessed. The model can be used to predict the evolution of contact area between overlying splats. This is in turn related to the through-thickness thermal conductivity, using a previously-developed analytical model
Corporate financing decisions: UK survey evidence
Despite theoretical developments in recent years, our understanding of corporate capital structure remains incomplete. Prior empirical research has been dominated by archival regression studies which are limited in their ability to fully reflect the diversity found in practice. The present paper reports on a comprehensive survey of corporate financing decision-making in UK listed companies. A key finding is that firms are heterogeneous in their capital structure policies. About half of the firms seek to maintain a target debt level, consistent with trade-off theory, but 60 per cent claim to follow a financing hierarchy, consistent with pecking order theory. These two theories are not viewed by respondents as either mutually exclusive or exhaustive. Many of the theoretical determinants of debt levels are widely accepted by respondents, in particular the importance of interest tax shield, financial distress, agency costs and also, at least implicitly, information asymmetry. Results also indicate that cross-country institutional differences have a significant impact on financial decisions
Relativistic instant-form approach to the structure of two-body composite systems
A new approach to the electroweak properties of two-particle composite
systems is developed. The approach is based on the use of the instant form of
relativistic Hamiltonian dynamics. The main novel feature of this approach is
the new method of construction of the matrix element of the electroweak current
operator. The electroweak current matrix element satisfies the relativistic
covariance conditions and in the case of the electromagnetic current also the
conservation law automatically. The properties of the system as well as the
approximations are formulated in terms of form factors. The approach makes it
possible to formulate relativistic impulse approximation in such a way that the
Lorentz-covariance of the current is ensured. In the electromagnetic case the
current conservation law is ensured, too. The results of the calculations are
unambiguous: they do not depend on the choice of the coordinate frame and on
the choice of "good" components of the current as it takes place in the
standard form of light--front dynamics. Our approach gives good results for the
pion electromagnetic form factor in the whole range of momentum transfers
available for experiments at present time, as well as for lepton decay constant
of pion.Comment: 26 pages, Revtex, 5 figure
Vector mesons in a relativistic point-form approach
We apply the point form of relativistic quantum mechanics to develop a
Poincare invariant coupled-channel formalism for two-particle systems
interacting via one-particle exchange. This approach takes the exchange
particle explicitly into account and leads to a generalized eigenvalue equation
for the Bakamjian-Thomas type mass operator of the system. The coupling of the
exchange particle is derived from quantum field theory. As an illustrative
example we consider vector mesons within the chiral constituent quark model in
which the hyperfine interaction between the confined quark-antiquark pair is
generated by Goldstone-boson exchange. We study the effect of retardation in
the Goldstone-boson exchange by comparing with the commonly used instantaneous
approximation. As a nice physical feature we find that the problem of a too
large - splitting can nearly be avoided by taking the dynamics of
the exchange meson explicitly into account.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur
Effects of Impurity Content on the Sintering Characteristics of Plasma-Sprayed Zirconia
Yttria-stabilized zirconia powders, containing different levels of SiO2 and Al2O3, have been plasma sprayed onto metallic substrates. The coatings were detached from their substrates and a dilatometer was used to monitor the dimensional changes they exhibited during prolonged heat treatments. It was found that specimens containing higher levels of silica and alumina exhibited higher rates of linear contraction, in both in-plane and through-thickness directions. The in-plane stiffness and the through-thickness thermal conductivity were also measured after different heat treatments and these were found to increase at a greater rate for specimens with higher impurity (silica and alumina) levels. Changes in the pore architecture during heat treatments were studied using Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP). Fine scale porosity (<_50 nm) was found to be sharply reduced even by relatively short heat treatments. This is correlated with improvements in inter-splat bonding and partial healing of intra-splat microcracks, which are responsible for the observed changes in stiffness and conductivity, as well as the dimensional changes
RQM description of the charge form factor of the pion and its asymptotic behavior
The pion charge and scalar form factors, and , are first
calculated in different forms of relativistic quantum mechanics. This is done
using the solution of a mass operator that contains both confinement and
one-gluon-exchange interactions. Results of calculations, based on a one-body
current, are compared to experiment for the first one. As it could be expected,
those point-form, and instant and front-form ones in a parallel momentum
configuration fail to reproduce experiment. The other results corresponding to
a perpendicular momentum configuration (instant form in the Breit frame and
front form with ) do much better. The comparison of charge and scalar
form factors shows that the spin-1/2 nature of the constituents plays an
important role. Taking into account that only the last set of results
represents a reasonable basis for improving the description of the charge form
factor, this one is then discussed with regard to the asymptotic QCD-power-law
behavior . The contribution of two-body currents in achieving the right
power law is considered while the scalar form factor, , is shown to
have the right power-law behavior in any case. The low- behavior of the
charge form factor and the pion-decay constant are also discussed.}Comment: 30 pages, 10 figure
