    The hydrogen sulfide emissions abatement program at the Geysers Geothermal Power Plant

    The scope of the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) abatement program at The Geysers Geothermal Power Plant and the measures currently under way to reduce these emissions are discussed. The Geysers steam averages 223 ppm H2S by weight and after passing through the turbines leaves the plant both through the gas ejector system and by air-stripping in the cooling towers. The sulfide dissolved in the cooling water is controlled by the use of an oxidation catalyst such as an iron salt. The H2S in the low Btu ejector off gases may be burned to sulfur dioxide and scrubbed directly into the circulating water and reinjected into the steam field with the excess condensate. Details are included concerning the disposal of the impure sulfur, design requirements for retrofitting existing plants and modified plant operating procedures. Discussion of future research aimed at improving the H2S abatement system is also included

    THE VALUE OF WATER AS AN URBAN CLUB GOOD: A MATCHING APPROACH TO HOA-PROVIDED LAKES

    Urban lakes located in arid environments require large quantities of water to maintain their water levels, with much of this water associated with high opportunity costs. Many of these lakes are manmade and provide various amenities to surrounding residents. In this paper we use matching techniques to recover the average capitalized value of lakes to surrounding communities and differentiate between community members and adjacent households to recover heterogeneous treatment effects. Importantly, we consider the role of both unobservable and observable features of matching to recover heterogeneous capitalization across lake communities. Our results suggest that the capitalized value of lakes to community residents is highly heterogeneous and ranges from an annual value of -29to+29 to +20 per homeowner per acre foot of water.     Investigation of wheat coleoptile response to phototropic stimulations

    This report provides a summary of the preparations for, and the conduct and post-flight data analysis of, the Spacelab flight investigation FOTRAN, which flew on the IML-1 mission (STS-42) in January, 1992. The investigation was designed to provide data on the responses of wheat seedlings to various blue-light stimuli given while the plants were exposed to orbital microgravity conditions. Before the flight, a number of hypotheses were established which were to be tested by the data from the flight and parallel ground studies. A description of the experiment protocol developed for the mission is provided, and an account of the activities supported during preparations for and support of the flight experiment is given. Details of the methods used to reduce and analyze the data from the flight are outlined

    Multiwavelength Mass Comparisons of the z~0.3 CNOC Cluster Sample

    Results are presented from a detailed analysis of optical and X-ray observations of moderate-redshift galaxy clusters from the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology (CNOC) subsample of the EMSS. The combination of extensive optical and deep X-ray observations of these clusters make them ideal candidates for multiwavelength mass comparison studies. X-ray surface brightness profiles of 14 clusters with 0.17<z<0.55 are constructed from Chandra observations and fit to single and double beta-models. Spatially resolved temperature analysis is performed, indicating that five of the clusters in this sample exhibit temperature gradients within their inner 60-200 kpc. Integrated spectra extracted within R_2500 provide temperature, abundance, and luminosity information. Under assumptions of hydrostatic equilibrium and spherical symmetry, we derive gas and total masses within R_2500 and R_200. We find an average gas mass fraction within R_200 of 0.136 +/- 0.004, resulting in Omega_m=0.28 +/- 0.01 (formal error). We also derive dynamical masses for these clusters to R_200. We find no systematic bias between X-ray and dynamical methods across the sample, with an average M(dyn)/M(X-ray) = 0.97 +/- 0.05. We also compare X-ray masses to weak lensing mass estimates of a subset of our sample, resulting in a weighted average of M(lens)/M(X-ray) of 0.99 +/- 0.07. We investigate X-ray scaling relationships and find powerlaw slopes which are slightly steeper than the predictions of self-similar models, with an E(z)^(-1) Lx-Tx slope of 2.4 +/- 0.2 and an E(z) M_2500-Tx slope of 1.7 +/- 0.1. Relationships between red-sequence optical richness (B_gc,red) and global cluster X-ray properties (Tx, Lx and M_2500) are also examined and fitted.Comment: Astrophysical Journal, 48 pages, 11 figures, LaTeX.     Origin of Strong Coupling in Lithium under Pressure

    In an attempt to provide a clearer understanding of the impressive increase in T_c under pressure in elemental Li, linear response calculation of the phonon dispersion curves, electron-phonon matrix elements, phonon linewidths and mode lambda's have been carried out on a finer mesh (24^3 in the Brillouin zone) than done previously, for the volume corresponding to 20 GPa pressure. The result illustrates the great need for a fine mesh (even finer than this) for converged results of lambda and the spectral function alpha^2 F. Although the initial pressure-induced transverse T_1 phonon instability (in harmonic approximation) near the symmetry point K has dominated attention, the current results show that the high value of T_c gets strong contributions from elsewhere in the zone, particularly from the longitudinal mode along (100).Comment: Proceedings for M2

    The effects of peer influence on adolescent pedestrian road-crossing decisions

    Objective: Adolescence is a high-risk period for pedestrian injury. It is also a time of heightened susceptibility to peer influence. The aim of this research was to examine the effects of peer influence on the pedestrian road-crossing decisions of adolescents. Methods: Using 10 videos of road-crossing sites, 80 16- to 18-year-olds were asked to make pedestrian road-crossing decisions. Participants were assigned to one of 4 experimental conditions: negative peer (influencing unsafe decisions), positive peer (influencing cautious decisions), silent peer (who observed but did not comment), and no peer (the participant completed the task alone). Peers from the adolescent’s own friendship group were recruited to influence either an unsafe or a cautious decision. Results: Statistically significant differences were found between peer conditions. Participants least often identified safe road-crossing sites when accompanied by a negative peer and more frequently identified dangerous road-crossing sites when accompanied by a positive peer. Both cautious and unsafe comments from a peer influenced adolescent pedestrians’ decisions. Conclusions: These findings showed that road-crossing decisions of adolescents were influenced by both unsafe and cautious comments from their peers.
