    We derive and study optimal and nearly-optimal strategies for the detection of sinusoidal signals hidden in additive (Gaussian and non-Gaussian) noise. Such strategies are an essential part of algorithms for the detection of the gravitational Continuous Wave (CW) signals produced by pulsars.     Temperature control in molecular dynamic simulations of non-equilibrium processes

    Thermostats are often used in various condensed matter problems, e.g. when a biological molecule undergoes a transformation in a solution, a crystal surface is irradiated with energetic particles, a crack propagates in a solid upon applied stress, two surfaces slide with respect to each other, an excited local phonon dissipates its energy into a crystal bulk, and so on. In all of these problems, as well as in many others, there is an energy transfer between different local parts of the entire system kept at a constant temperature. Very often, when modelling such processes using molecular dynamics simulations, thermostatting is done using strictly equilibrium approaches serving to describe the NV T ensemble. In this paper we critically discuss the applicability of such approaches to non-equilibrium problems, including those mentioned above, and stress that the correct temperature control can only be achieved if the method is based on the generalized Langevin equation (GLE). Specifically, we emphasize that a meaningful compromise between computational efficiency and a physically appropriate implementation of the NV T thermostat can be achieved, at least for solid state and surface problems, if the so-called stochastic boundary conditions (SBC), recently derived from the GLE (Kantorovich and Rompotis 2008 Phys. Rev. B 78 094305), are used. For SBC, the Langevin thermostat is only applied to the outer part of the simulated fragment of the entire system which borders the surrounding environment (not considered explicitly) serving as a heat bath. This point is illustrated by comparing the performance of the SBC and some of the equilibrium thermostats in two problems: (i) irradiation of the Si(001) surface with an energetic CaF2 molecule using an ab initio density functional theory based method, and (ii) the tribology of two amorphous SiO2 surfaces coated with self-assembled monolayers of methyl-terminated hydrocarbon alkoxylsilane molecules using a classical atomistic force field. We discuss the differences in behaviour of these systems due to applied thermostatting, and show that in some cases a qualitatively different physical behaviour of the simulated system can be obtained if an equilibrium thermostat is used

    The antimicrobial polymer PHMB enters cells and selectively condenses bacterial chromosomes

    To combat infection and antimicrobial resistance, it is helpful to elucidate drug mechanism(s) of action. Here we examined how the widely used antimicrobial polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) kills bacteria selectively over host cells. Contrary to the accepted model of microbial membrane disruption by PHMB, we observed cell entry into a range of bacterial species, and treated bacteria displayed cell division arrest and chromosome condensation, suggesting DNA binding as an alternative antimicrobial mechanism. A DNA-level mechanism was confirmed by observations that PHMB formed nanoparticles when mixed with isolated bacterial chromosomal DNA and its effects on growth were suppressed by pairwise combination with the DNA binding ligand Hoechst 33258. PHMB also entered mammalian cells, but was trapped within endosomes and excluded from nuclei. Therefore, PHMB displays differential access to bacterial and mammalian cellular DNA and selectively binds and condenses bacterial chromosomes. Because acquired resistance to PHMB has not been reported, selective chromosome condensation provides an unanticipated paradigm for antimicrobial action that may not succumb to resistance

    Personality and functional vision in older adults with age-related macular degeneration

    Introduction: The purpose of the study was to determine whether personality traits influence self-reported functional vision in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods: This is a prospective cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from the Low Vision Depression Prevention Trial. Participants (N = 182) over age 65 with bilateral AMD, visual acuity worse than 20/70 in the better-seeing eye, and subthreshold depression were recruited from the Wills Eye Hospital retina practice. Assessments included visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-25 plus Supplement (NEI VFQ-25) near and distance subscales, depression, and personality testing. Structural equation models were used to investigate the relationship of the NEI VFQ near activities and distance activities with the various demographic, clinical, and psychological predictors. Results: In the single-predictor model for near functional vision, visual acuity at logMAR ≤ 1 (estimate = -0.33 [95% confidence interval {CI} -0.46, -0.20]; p ≤ 0.001), neuroticism (estimate = -0.05 [95% CI -0.08, -0.01]; p = 0.01), and education (estimate = -0.08 [95% CI 0.01, 0.15]; p = 0.03) were statistically significant predictors. In the single-predictor model for distance functional vision, only visual acuity at logMAR ≤ 1 (estimate = -0.49 [95% CI -0.69, -0.29]; p ≤ 0.001) and neuroticism (estimate = -0.09 [95% CI -0.15, 0.02]; p = 0.008) were statistically significant predictors. Discussion: Self-reported functional vision depends on the severity of vision loss as well as the personality trait of neuroticism. Implications for practitioners: Assessment of personality traits, particularly neuroticism, may increase the precision of rating scales of functional vision and suggest new rehabilitative interventions to improve the functional vision and quality of life of patients with AMD © 2014 AFB, All Rights Reserved

    Radiating dipoles in photonic crystals

    The radiation dynamics of a dipole antenna embedded in a Photonic Crystal are modeled by an initially excited harmonic oscillator coupled to a non--Markovian bath of harmonic oscillators representing the colored electromagnetic vacuum within the crystal. Realistic coupling constants based on the natural modes of the Photonic Crystal, i.e., Bloch waves and their associated dispersion relation, are derived. For simple model systems, well-known results such as decay times and emission spectra are reproduced. This approach enables direct incorporation of realistic band structure computations into studies of radiative emission from atoms and molecules within photonic crystals. We therefore provide a predictive and interpretative tool for experiments in both the microwave and optical regimes.Comment: Phys. Rev. E, accepte

    Building a Youth Development System in Kenya: Comparing Kenyan Perceptions of Local and National Systems

    The purpose of this paper is to begin a dialogue of developing a integrated and comprehensive system for youth in Kenya by identifying factors impacting the creation of a youth development system and exploring recommendations supporting and advancing such a system.  The results of two collaborative assessments of the needs and strengths of Kenyan youth and the youth-serving programs based on the perspectives of practitioners, policy-makers, and scholars of youth-development are presented. The study was framed from the perspective of a systems approach to youth development in Kenya (Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 2006; Overton & Lerner, 2012). Osgood (2012) identifies four steps for developing a systems approach for serving the needs of youth: (1) self-assessment, (2) goal identification, (3) planning, and (4) networking. The first step, self-assessment, was initiated through a SWOT analysis with two different groups of youth development professionals across a 2-year period (2014-2015).  The 2014 SWOT analysis presented the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to developing a youth development system from a national level, whereas the 2015 SWOT analysis focused on these same factors but from a more local level of youth development programs and services.  The results of these two analyses are presented and initial recommendations for building a more integrated and comprehensive youth development system in Kenya are presented.  The need for further input and investigation is also discussed.   This is a correction to the original article.
