    Organizational stressor of staff negative behaviors among higher education deans: a post positivist multiple case study

    Organizations and institutions today are now seeing rise of organizational stress and how it is directly contributing to the rise of financial and personal cost of mental health issues among its workers (Patty, 2016). The all important field of higher education is not spared and is also undergoing a paradigm shift, as a historically low competition industry to a sudden highly competitive industry (Otara, 2015). With these drastic changes, higher education deans are now plagued by a myriad of organizational stressors. A qualitative case study approach was used to investigated this phenomenon, encompassing the interview techniques of Patton (2002) and the validity and reliability exercises of Creswell (2014). Deans from one institution was found to encounter staff related organizational stressors which consisted of lecturer low performance, lecturer going against dean, lecturer against lecturer, lecturer negative behavior, lecturer low work ethic, and administrative staff negative work elements. This confirmed on the existence of organizational stressors among higher education deans and may be used to spur future research to reduce or eliminated this phenomenon

This protein is highly conserved in eukaryotes and archaea but is not found in bacteria. Although genomic and biophysical studies have suggested involvement of this protein in RNA metabolism and in ribosome biogenesis, its interacting partners remain largely unknown. Results We determined the crystal structure of the SBDS orthologue from Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus (mthSBDS). This structure shows that SBDS proteins are highly flexible, with the N-terminal FYSH domain and the C-terminal ferredoxin-like domain capable of undergoing substantial rotational adjustments with respect to the central domain. Affinity chromatography identified several proteins from the large ribosomal subunit as possible interacting partners of mthSBDS. Moreover, SELEX (Systematic Evolution of Ligands by EXponential enrichment) experiments, combined with electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSA) suggest that mthSBDS does not interact with RNA molecules in a sequence specific manner. Conclusion It is suggested that functional interactions of SBDS proteins with their partners could be facilitated by rotational adjustments of the N-terminal and the C-terminal domains with respect to the central domain. Examination of the SBDS protein structure and domain movements together with its possible interaction with large ribosomal subunit proteins suggest that these proteins could participate in ribosome function.Published versio

    The development and testing of the adaptation skills emotional intelligence module was designed to identify the social emotional intelligence scores of female workers at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. This module was built on the component of social emotional intelligence adaptive skills as found in the Bar-On Model. The adaptive components of Bar-On model consist of Reality Testing, Flexibility and Problem Solving. These three components are important for looking at the extent of the efficiency of social emotional intelligence in individuals. Development of the COVID-19 Situational Adaptation Skills Emotional Intelligence Module among Working Women at Universiti Malaysia Sabah is an approach that can be used to train women workers to be flexible in their life and they carrier. The built -in understanding of the effects of the modules used can certainly help working women to adapt to the current situation of the pendemic. This module is an initiative developed specifically to provide space for women to train themselves to deal with situations. The module was developed starting with discussion, draft writing then draft refinement before finally being submitted to an expert for evaluation. The study was conducted using a descriptive design aimed at identifying the level of validity of the construction and testing of the COVID-19 situational adaptation skills emotional intelligence module among female workes at the University Malaysia Sabah. The validity test of the module involved three expert evaluators consisting of lecturers from public universities with qualifications and expertise in psychology and counseling. An expert agree that this module is feasible based on the 87.3% overall validity level. The Cronbach's Alpha value is also high. Therefore, indirectly, this module is suitable to be used to female staff at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Through an intervention of this module is certainly useful and can be used as a guide when facing similar problems in the future. In fact, it can be used as a basis in drafting (blueprint) programs or activities not only for women employees at UMS but also women in other organizations

    A simple point-of-care assay accurately detects anti-spike antibodies after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination

    ObjectiveLateral flow assays (LFA) are sensitive for detecting antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 proteins within weeks after infection. This study tested samples from immunocompetent adults, and those receiving treatments for chronic inflammatory diseases (CID), before and after mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccination.MethodsWe compared results obtained with the COVIBLOCK Covid-19 LFA to those obtained by anti-spike (S) ELISA.ResultsThe LFA detected anti-S antibodies in 29 of 29 (100%) of the immunocompetent and 110 of 126 (87.3%) of the CID participants after vaccination. Semiquantitative LFA scores were statistically significantly lower in samples from immunosuppressed participants, and were significantly correlated with anti-S antibody levels measured by ELISA.ConclusionsThis simple LFA test is a practical alternative to laboratory-based assays for detecting anti-S antibodies after infection or vaccination. This type of test may be most useful for testing people in outpatient or resource-limited settings

    All biomaterials initiate a tissue response when implanted in living tissues. Ultimately this reaction causes fibrous encapsulation and hence isolation of the material, leading to failure of the intended therapeutic effect of the implant. There has been extensive bioengineering research aimed at overcoming or delaying the onset of encapsulation. Nanotechnology has the potential to address this problem by virtue of the ability of some nanomaterials to modulate interactions with cells, thereby inducing specific biological responses to implanted foreign materials. To this effect in the present study, we have characterised the growth of fibroblasts on nano-structured sheets constituted by BaTiO3, a material extensively used in biomedical applications. We found that sheets of vertically aligned BaTiO3 nanotubes inhibit cell cycle progression - without impairing cell viability - of NIH-3T3 fibroblast cells. We postulate that the 3D organization of the material surface acts by increasing the availability of adhesion sites, promoting cell attachment and inhibition of cell proliferation. This finding could be of relevance for biomedical applications designed to prevent or minimize fibrous encasement by uncontrolled proliferation of fibroblastic cells with loss of material-tissue interface underpinning long-term function of implants

    Selective laser melting–enabled electrospinning: Introducing complexity within electrospun membranes

    Additive manufacturing technologies enable the creation of very precise and well-defined structures that can mimic hierarchical features of natural tissues. In this article, we describe the development of a manufacturing technology platform to produce innovative biodegradable membranes that are enhanced with controlled microenvironments produced via a combination of selective laser melting techniques and conventional electrospinning. This work underpins the manufacture of a new generation of biomaterial devices that have significant potential for use as both basic research tools and components of therapeutic implants. The membranes were successfully manufactured and a total of three microenvironment designs (niches) were chosen for thorough characterisation. Scanning electron microscopy analysis demonstrated differences in fibre diameters within different areas of the niche structures as well as differences in fibre density. We also showed the potential of using the microfabricated membranes for supporting mesenchymal stromal cell culture and proliferation. We demonstrated that mesenchymal stromal cells grow and populate the membranes penetrating within the niche-like structures. These findings demonstrate the creation of a very versatile tool that can be used in a variety of tissue regeneration applications including bone healing

    The Mutant Form of Lamin A that Causes Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Is a Biomarker of Cellular Aging in Human Skin

    Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS, OMIM 176670) is a rare disorder characterized by accelerated aging and early death, frequently from stroke or coronary artery disease. 90% of HGPS cases carry the LMNA G608G (GGC>GGT) mutation within exon 11 of LMNA, activating a splice donor site that results in production of a dominant negative form of lamin A protein, denoted progerin. Screening 150 skin biopsies from unaffected individuals (newborn to 97 years) showed that a similar splicing event occurs in vivo at a low level in the skin at all ages. While progerin mRNA remains low, the protein accumulates in the skin with age in a subset of dermal fibroblasts and in a few terminally differentiated keratinocytes. Progerin-positive fibroblasts localize near the basement membrane and in the papillary dermis of young adult skin; however, their numbers increase and their distribution reaches the deep reticular dermis in elderly skin. Our findings demonstrate that progerin expression is a biomarker of normal cellular aging and may potentially be linked to terminal differentiation and senescence in elderly individuals

    In Vivo Outer Hair Cell Length Changes Expose the Active Process in the Cochlea

    BACKGROUND: Mammalian hearing is refined by amplification of the sound-evoked vibration of the cochlear partition. This amplification is at least partly due to forces produced by protein motors residing in the cylindrical body of the outer hair cell. To transmit power to the cochlear partition, it is required that the outer hair cells dynamically change their length, in addition to generating force. These length changes, which have not previously been measured in vivo, must be correctly timed with the acoustic stimulus to produce amplification. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using in vivo optical coherence tomography, we demonstrate that outer hair cells in living guinea pigs have length changes with unexpected timing and magnitudes that depend on the stimulus level in the sensitive cochlea. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The level-dependent length change is a necessary condition for directly validating that power is expended by the active process presumed to underlie normal hearing
