OUTDOOR RECREATION TRENDS AND MARKET OPPORTUNITIES IN THE UNITED STATES
In 1994 and 1995, the National Survey of Recreation and Environment (NSRE) was accomplished by interviewing approximately 17,000 Americans over age 15 in random-digit-dialing telephone samplings. The primary purpose was to learn about the outdoor recreation activities of people over age 15 in the United States. Adlayer core-level shifts of random metal overlayers on transition-metal substrates
We calculate the difference of the ionization energies of a core-electron of
a surface alloy, i.e., a B-atom in a A_(1-x) B_x overlayer on a
fcc-B(001)-substrate, and a core-electron of the clean fcc-B(001) surface using
density-functional-theory. We analyze the initial-state contributions and the
screening effects induced by the core hole, and study the influence of the
alloy composition for a number of noble metal-transition metal systems. Data
are presented for Cu_(1-x)Pd_x/Pd(001), Ag_(1-x) Pd_x/Pd(001), Pd_(1-x)
Cu_x/Cu(001), and Pd_(1-x) Ag_x/Ag(001), changing x from 0 to 100 %. Our
analysis clearly indicates the importance of final-state screening effects for
the interpretation of measured core-level shifts. Calculated deviations from
the initial-state trends are explained in terms of the change of inter- and
intra-atomic screening upon alloying. A possible role of alloying on the

Potential, core-level and d band shifts at transition metal surfaces
We have extended the validity of the correlation between the surface
3d-core-level shift (SCLS) and the surface d band shift (SDBS) to the entire 4d
transition metal series and to the neighboring elements Sr and Ag via accurate
first-principles calculations. We find that the correlation is quasilinear and
robust with respect to the differencies both between initial and final-state
calculations of the SCLS's and two distinct measures of the SDBS's. We show
that despite the complex spatial dependence of the surface potential shift
(SPS) and the location of the 3d and 4d orbitals in different regions of space,
the correlation exists because the sampling of the SPS by the 3d and 4d
orbitals remains similar. We show further that the sign change of the SCLS's
across the transition series does indeed arise from the d band-narrowing
mechanism previously proposed. However, while in the heavier transition metals
the predicted increase of d electrons in the surface layer relative to the bulk
arises primarily from transfers from s and p states to d states within the
surface layer, in the lighter transition metals the predicted decrease of

Fall Risk is Not Black and White
Objective: To determine whether previously reported racial differences in fall rates between White and Black/African American is explained by differences in health status and neighborhood characteristics.
Design: Prospective cohort
Setting: Community
Participants: The study included 550 White and 116 Black older adults in the Greater Boston area (mean age: 78 years; 36% men) who were English-speaking, able to walk across a room, and without severe cognitive impairment.
Measurements: Falls were prospectively reported using monthly fall calendars. The location of each fall and fall-related injuries were asked during telephone interviews. At baseline, we assessed risk factors for falls, including sociodemographic characteristics, physiologic risk factors, physical activity, and community-level characteristics.
Results: Over the mean follow-up of 1,048 days, 1,539 falls occurred (incidence: 806/1,000 person-years). Whites were more likely than Blacks to experience any falls (867 versus 504 falls per 1,000 person-years; RR [95% CI]: 1.77 [1.33, 2.36]), outdoor falls (418 versus 178 falls per 1,000 person-years; 1.78 [1.08, 2.92]), indoor falls (434 versus 320 falls per 1,000 person-years; 1.44 [1.02, 2.05]), and injurious falls (367 versus 205 falls per 1,000 person-years; 1.79 [1.30, 2.46]). With exception of injurious falls, higher fall rates in Whites than Blacks were substantially attenuated with adjustment for risk factors and community-level characteristics: any fall (1.24 [0.81, 1.89]), outdoor fall (1.57 [0.86, 2.88]), indoor fall (1.08 [0.64, 1.81]), and injurious fall (1.77 [1.14, 2.74]).
Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the racial differences in fall rates may be largely due to confounding by individual-level and community-level characteristics
Excitons in a Photosynthetic Light-Harvesting System: A Combined Molecular Dynamics/Quantum Chemistry and Polaron Model Study
The dynamics of pigment-pigment and pigment-protein interactions in
light-harvesting complexes is studied with a novel approach which combines
molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with quantum chemistry (QC) calculations.
The MD simulations of an LH-II complex, solvated and embedded in a lipid
bilayer at physiological conditions (with total system size of 87,055 atoms)
revealed a pathway of a water molecule into the B800 binding site, as well as
increased dimerization within the B850 BChl ring, as compared to the
dimerization found for the crystal structure. The fluctuations of pigment (B850
BChl) excitation energies, as a function of time, were determined via ab initio
QC calculations based on the geometries that emerged from the MD simulations.
From the results of these calculations we constructed a time-dependent
Hamiltonian of the B850 exciton system from which we determined the linear
absorption spectrum. Finally, a polaron model is introduced to describe quantum
mechanically both the excitonic and vibrational (phonon) degrees of freedom.
The exciton-phonon coupling that enters into the polaron model, and the
corresponding phonon spectral function are derived from the MD/QC simulations.
It is demonstrated that, in the framework of the polaron model, the absorption
spectrum of the B850 excitons can be calculated from the autocorrelation
function of the excitation energies of individual BChls, which is readily
available from the combined MD/QC simulations. The obtained result is in good

Preface: The U.S.-Australia Cooperative Rangeland Science Program In October 1968 the governments of the United States and Australia entered into an agreement for the purpose of facilitating close cooperative activities between the scientific communities of the two countries. The joint communique issued at that time designated the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Australian Commonwealth Department of Education and Science as the coordinating agencies. Both countries were to encourage binational teamwork in research, interchanges of scientists, joint seminars, and exchanges of information. A United States-Australia Rangeland Panel was established in December 1969 to further cooperation between the two countries in the rangeland sciences. The present panel includes the following

The supply chain of violence
Every year, more people are killed defending the environment than are soldiers from the United Kingdom and Australia on overseas deployments in war zones combined. During the last 15 years, the number of both deaths of environmental defenders, and the countries where they occur, have increased. Recorded deaths have increased from two per week to four per week over this period. These deaths are primarily related to conflict over natural resources, across a range of sectors. Of 683 total deaths, >230 were related to mining and agribusiness between 2014 and 2017. We find that rule of law and corruption indices are closely linked to patterns of killings. Using spatial data, we investigate the drivers of these conflicts and violence and seek to identify who may be most at risk and why. We argue that businesses, investors and national governments at both ends of the chain of violence need to be more accountable
Social support and cognition in a community-based cohort: the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study
Objective: social support has demonstrated cross-sectional associations with greater cognitive function and a protective effect against cognitive decline in older adults, but exploration of its temporal role in cognitive ageing from mid-life to older adulthood has been limited.
