A Investigação e a escrita: Publicar sem Perecer

Research and Writing: Publish do not Perish is a collection of texts published in Portuguese, based on the problematization of a five-year experience of advanced extracurricular training in information literacy, writing and scientific publication (i.e., Publish do not Perish: Survive the Stampede). It is a questioning of the role of science in a context that appears to reproduce neoliberalism and the commodification of academia. This work results from the collaboration of national and international authors who consider a diversity of theoretical and empirical fields that deal with that phenomenon. This book aims to identify and question the subsequent problems, trying to point out solutions to the growing malaise in the academic world

LGBTQI+ Healthcare (in)Equalities in Portugal: What Can We Learn from Asexuality?

The main purpose of this article is to analyse how healthcare providers in Portugal perceive asexuality. To do so, the author makes use of qualitative data from both the CILIA LGBTQI+ Lives project and The Asexual Revolution doctoral research on asexuality in Portugal, namely, a focus group conducted with healthcare providers, drawing from their assessment of interview excerpts with people identifying as asexual. The data were explored according to thematic analysis and revealed three major tendencies: (1) old tropes at the doctor's office; (2) narratives of willingness to learn about the subject; and (3) constructive and encouraging views of asexuality. From this analysis, valuable lessons can be drawn concerning the respect for gender and sexual diversity. The author argues that both formal and informal learning play an important role in building cultural competence among healthcare providers. This could be achieved both by introducing sexual and gender diversity in curricula in HE and through media exposure on these subjects. Overall, it will lead to building knowledge and empathy about marginalised groups, and will help fight inequalities of LGBTQI+ people in healthcare. As such, LGTBQI+ activism that puts the topics of asexuality and LGBTQI+ in the media agenda, is a powerful strategy. Hence, because healthcare providers show willingness to learn, the media becomes a source for learning about asexual and LGTBQI+ experiences, which they can incorporate in their medical practice

O foco deste capítulo é providenciar uma visão geral da investigação académica sobre a perceção e negociação de identidades sexuais e de género de pessoas LGBTQ+ jovens adultas nas plataformas digitais. Baseado numa revisão sistemática da literatura, mas assumindo uma perspetiva de análise crítica, o texto procura descrever as principais tendências e ausências encontradas na literatura académica recente, bem como pensar em caminhos futuros para a investigação sobre este tema. Para tal, foram considerados três aspetos mais salientes: a construção de comunidade queer, a negociação de scripts de género e a gestão e performance de identidade nas plataformas digitais

Ser «jovem» cientista social sem perecer na academia-turbilhão

Neste capítulo, faz-se uma análise crítica sobre o que é ser investigador/a em início de carreira (IIC) em Ciências Sociais, em Portugal. Partindo da própria experiência situada enquanto Investigadoras em Início de Carreira - IIC, as autoras analisam práticas académicas como a produção do texto académico e a disseminação do conhecimento científico, quer online, quer offline, como prática social atravessada por múltiplas desigualdades de poder. As autoras problematizam ainda o trabalho académico invisível e invisibilizado, que vai para além do texto (escrita e publicação). Finalmente, ensaiam alternativas para não perecer na academia-turbilhão.In this chapter, we conduct a critical analysis about what it means to be an early career researcher (ECR) in social sciences in Portugal. Based on our own situated experience as ECRs, we explore academic practices such as the process of constructing the scientific text and the dissemination of scientific knowledge as a social practice intersected by multiple power relations. The authors also question invisible and invisibilized academic work, that goes beyond the text (writing and publication). Finally, they try out alternatives to not perish in the stampede academy

Partindo de uma revisão bibliográfica do corpo de pesquisa dedicado ao tema e de representações culturais recentes, este trabalho de investigação tenta perceber, entre outros aspectos, a forma como a masturbação é vista e representada actualmente no cinema e na televisão mainstream, e relacionar estas representações com a sua herança histórica, médica e também religiosa.Taking a literary review of the body of knowledge devoted to the subject as a starting point, as well as recent cultural representations, this research tries to understand, among other things, how masturbation is seen and represented currently in mainstream film and television, and to relate these representations with its historical, medical and religious heritage

(As)sexualidade (in)visível? Discursos e representações mediáticas sobre a assexualidade em Portugal

This article uses multimodal analysis to explore the representation of asexuality in Portuguese mainstream media from 2011– 2017. After an overview of how the concept of asexuality has been discussed in scientific literature, I briefly address how its relationship with the media has been an object of study internationally and how the concept captured media attention in Portugal. I then proceed to a multimodal analysis of a collection of media stories on asexuality in Portuguese print (newspaper and magazines) and broadcast (radio, television and internet) mainstream media, identifying major themes and then considering the critical trends and absences. The major tendency points to a positive portrayal of asexuality as part of the human experience and puts asexually identified people centre stage, owning the narratives about themselves.Este artigo apresenta o resultado de uma análise multimodal da representação da assexualidade nos meios de comunicação social mainstream portugueses. Em Portugal, os meios de comunicação desempenharam um papel central na relação entre a recém-formada comunidade assexual portuguesa e o público em geral. A atenção dos média sobre a assexualidade em Portugal gerou uma discussão sobre como as pessoas assexuais são representadas, mas também sobre as representações sociais da diversidade sexual em geral. Como resultado, a comunidade assexual e o movimento LGBTQI+ portugueses foram impelidos a refletir sobre a sua atividade e sobre a imagem pública que pretendiam transmitir. Portanto, a comunidade teve que fazer escolhas: em que média participar; quem participa; a que rostos a mensagem é associada; até que ponto as pessoas aliadas devem ser tidas em consideração; quais tipos de discurso são privilegiados e quais são excluídos. Entre outros efeitos públicos, o movimento LGBTQI+ português passou a reconhecer a assexualidade nos documentos por si produzidos. O corpus de materiais sobre a temática cresceu, e a assexualidade deixou uma marca significativa. A principal tendência aponta para um retrato positivo da assexualidade que coloca as pessoas assexuadas no centro do palco, tendo controlo das narrativas sobre si mesmas
