    The Role of Stellar Feedback in the Dynamics of HII Regions

    Stellar feedback is often cited as the biggest uncertainty in galaxy formation models today. This uncertainty stems from a dearth of observational constraints as well as the great dynamic range between the small scales (<1 pc) where the feedback occurs and the large scales of galaxies (>1 kpc) that are shaped by this feedback. To bridge this divide, in this paper we aim to assess observationally the role of stellar feedback at the intermediate scales of HII regions. In particular, we employ multiwavelength data to examine several stellar feedback mechanisms in a sample of 32 HII regions in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC, respectively). Using optical, infrared, radio, and X-ray images, we measure the pressures exerted on the shells from the direct stellar radiation, the dust-processed radiation, the warm ionized gas, and the hot X-ray emitting gas. We find that the warm ionized gas dominates over the other terms in all of the sources, although two have comparable dust-processed radiation pressures to their warm gas pressures. The hot gas pressures are comparatively weak, while the direct radiation pressures are 1-2 orders of magnitude below the other terms. We discuss the implications of these results, particularly highlighting evidence for hot gas leakage from the HII shells and regarding the momentum deposition from the dust-processed radiation to the warm gas. Furthermore, we emphasize that similar observational work should be done on very young HII regions to test whether direct radiation pressure and hot gas can drive the dynamics at early times.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures; accepted by Ap

    Introduction: An aphysiological pattern in computerized dynamic posturography (CDP) may be produced by numerous causes. We analyze the results obtained in this test by a group of malingering patients. Patients and method: This study analyzes a particular group of 7 malingerers, ie patients simulating a false and unreal equilibrium disorder, without any a priori awareness of the gain expected from a pathological report. The condition can only be identified with the very complex postural disorder known as “continuous imbalance.” We analyze the results of the dynamic posturography test following the diagnostic criteria described by other authors. Results: Of the criteria analyzed, we found Cevette’s to be the most frequently positive for our study group. Conclusions: The wide diversity in the criteria used makes it necessary to apply them together, assuming a high level of suspicion and great care in the diagnostic process

    Smartphone-based simultaneous pH and nitrite colorimetric determination for paper microfluidic devices

    In this work, an Android application for measurement of nitrite concentration and pH determination in combination with a low-cost paper-based microfluidic device is presented. The application uses seven sensing areas, containing the corresponding immobilized reagents, to produce selective color changes when a sample solution is placed in the sampling area. Under controlled conditions of light, using the flash of the smartphone as a light source, the image captured with the built-in camera is processed using a customized algorithm for multidetection of the colored sensing areas. The developed imageprocessing allows reducing the influence of the light source and the positioning of the microfluidic device in the picture. Then, the H (hue) and S (saturation) coordinates of the HSV color space are extracted and related to pH and nitrite concentration, respectively. A complete characterization of the sensing elements has been carried out as well as a full description of the image analysis for detection. The results show good use of a mobile phone as an analytical instrument. For the pH, the resolution obtained is 0.04 units of pH, 0.09 of accuracy, and a mean squared error of 0.167. With regard to nitrite, 0.51% at 4.0 mg L−1 of resolution and 0.52 mg L−1 as the limit of detection was achieved

    Fabrication and Actuation of Magnetic Shape-Memory Materials

    Soft actuators are deformable materials that change their dimensions and/or shape in response to external stimuli. Among the various stimuli, remote magnetic fields are one of the most attractive forms of actuation, due to their ease of use, fast response and safety in biological systems. Composites of magnetic particles with polymer matrices are the most common material for magnetic soft actuators. In this paper, we demonstrate the fabrication and actuation of magnetic shape-memory materials based on hydrogels containing field-structured magnetic particles. These actuators are formed by placing the pregel dispersion into a mold of the desired on-field shape and exposing this to a homogeneous magnetic field until the gel point is reached. At this point the material may be removed from the mold and fully gelled in the desired off-field shape. The resultant magnetic shape-memory material then transitions between these two shapes when subjected to successive cycles of a homogeneous magnetic field, acting as a large deformation actuator. For actuators that are planar in the off-field state, this can result in significant bending to return to the on-field state. In addition, it is possible to make shape-memory materials that twist under the application of a magnetic field.     Changes in the heart rate variability in patients with obstructive sleep apnea and its response to acute CPAP treatment

    Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The goal of this study was to demonstrate whether the use of CPAP produces significant changes in the heart rate or in the heart rate variability of patients with OSA in the first night of treatment and whether gender and obesity play a role in these differences. METHODS: Single-center transversal study including patients with severe OSA corrected with CPAP. Only patients with total correction after CPAP were included. Patients underwent two sleep studies on consecutive nights: the first night a basal study, and the second with CPAP. We also analyzed the heart rate changes and their relationship with CPAP treatment, sleep stages, sex and body mass index. Twenty-minute segments of the ECG were selected from the sleep periods of REM, no-REM and awake. Heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) were studied by comparing the R-R interval in the different conditions. We also compared samples from the basal study and CPAP nights. RESULTS: 39 patients (15 females, 24 males) were studied. The mean age was 50.67 years old, the mean AHI was 48.54, and mean body mass index was 33.41 kg/m(2) (31.83 males, 35.95 females). Our results showed that HRV (SDNN) decreased after the use of CPAP during the first night of treatment, especially in non-REM sleep. Gender and obesity did not have any influence on our results. CONCLUSIONS: These findings support that cardiac variability improves as an acute effect, independently of gender or weight, in the first night of CPAP use in severe OSA patients, supporting the idea of continuous use and emphasizing that noncompliance of CPAP treatment should be avoided even if it is just once

    Modelling the Inorganic Bromine Partitioning in the Tropical Tropopause over the Pacific Ocean

    The stratospheric inorganic bromine burden (Bry) arising from the degradation of brominated very short-lived organic substances (VSL org ), and its partitioning between reactive and reservoir species, is needed for a comprehensive assessment of the ozone depletion potential of brominated trace gases. Here we present modelled inorganic bromine abundances over the Pacific tropical tropopause based on aircraft observations of VSL org of two campaigns of the Airborne Tropical TRopopause EXperiment (ATTREX 2013 carried out over eastern Pacific and ATTREX 2014 carried out over the western Pacific) and chemistry-climate simulations (along ATTREX flight tracks) using the specific meteorology prevailing. Using the Community Atmosphere Model with Chemistry (CAM-Chem), we model that BrO and Br are the daytime dominant species. Integrated across all ATTREX flights BrO represents ~ 43 % and 48 % of daytime Bry abundance at 17 km over the Western and Eastern Pacific, respectively. The results also show zones where Br/BrO >1 depending on the solar zenith angle (SZA), ozone concentration and temperature. On the other hand, BrCl and BrONO 2 were found to be the dominant night-time species with ~ 61% and 56 % of abundance at 17 km over the Western and Eastern Pacific, respectively. The western-to-eastern differences in the partitioning of inorganic bromine are explained by different abundances of ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) , and total inorganic chlorine (Cly).Fil: Navarro, María A..     Radial imbibition in paper under temperature differences

    Spontaneous radial imbibition into thin circular samples of porous material when they have been subjected to radial temperature differences was analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The use of the Darcy equation allows us to take into account temperature variations in the dynamic viscosity and surface tension in order to found the one-dimensional equation for the imbibition fronts.
