    Effect of central hole location in phakic intraocular lenses on visual function under progressive headlight glare sources

    Purpose: To analyze the effect of the central hole location in the V4c implantable collamer lens (ICL) on the quality of vision, including progressive headlight glare simulation and quality of life. Setting: IOBA-Eye Institute, Valladolid, Spain. Design: Case series. Methods: The central hole location was determined by slitlamp and dual Scheimpflug imaging for 6 months or more postoperatively. The visual acuity, mesopic contrast sensitivity, halogen glare contrast sensitivity, xenon glare contrast sensitivity, photostress recovery time after glare, de Boer scale, and Quality of Life Impact of Refractive Correction (QIRC) questionnaire results were evaluated. Multiple regression models were used to analyze the effect of the central hole location on parameters using the pupil center and visual axis as references based on Cartesian and polar coordinates. Results: The safety index was 1.13 and the efficacy index, 1.12. Under all testing circumstances, central hole decentration did not affect the visual acuity or contrast sensitivity. With the visual axis as a reference, worse QIRC values were associated with greater upward central hole displacement (P = .03) and a lower polar angle value (P = .008); also, halogen glare discomfort was greater with a higher radius (P = .04). Using the pupil center as a reference, greater nasal central hole decentration was associated with longer xenon glare photostress recovery time (P = .002). Conclusions: Implantation of the ICL with a central hole yielded excellent visual outcomes, even under increasing glare sources, regardless of the hole's location. However, hole decentration might affect patient-perceived quality of life, bothersome halogen glare, and longer xenon glare photostress recovery time.     CO2 activation of char from argan nutshells pyrolysis a preliminary study

    CO2 physical activation was performed to produce activated carbons from pyrolysis char. The process was fed by char produced in the pyrolysis of argan nutshells. This unexplored feedstock is a residue of argan oil production. This preliminary study showed that the activated carbons obtained in this process are characterized by a large surface area and a great capacity to retain contaminants

    PR-LncRNA Signature Regulates Glioma Cell Activity Through Expression of SOX Factors

    Long non-coding RNAs (LncRNAs) have emerged as a relevant class of genome regulators involved in a broad range of biological processes and with important roles in tumor initiation and malignant progression. We have previously identified a p53-regulated tumor suppressor signature of LncRNAs (PR-LncRNAs) in colorectal cancer. Our aim was to identify the expression and function of this signature in gliomas. We found that the expression of the four PR-LncRNAs tested was high in human low-grade glioma samples and diminished with increasing grade of disease, being the lowest in glioblastoma samples. Functional assays demonstrated that PR-LncRNA silencing increased glioma cell proliferation and oncosphere formation. Mechanistically, we found an inverse correlation between PR-LncRNA expression and SOX1, SOX2 and SOX9 stem cell factors in human glioma biopsies and in glioma cells in vitro. Moreover, knock-down of SOX activity abolished the effect of PR-LncRNA silencing in glioma cell activity. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that the expression and function of PR-LncRNAs are significantly altered in gliomagenesis and that their activity is mediated by SOX factors.     Stakeholder Perceptions of Nature-Based Solutions and Their Collaborative Co-Design and Implementation Processes in Rural Mountain Areas—A Case Study From PHUSICOS

    Planners and engineers increasingly discovered nature as a source of inspiration to mitigate hydro-meteorological risks resulting from extreme weather events. Actors are realizing advantages of such solutions known as Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to rapidly adapt to changing climate patterns and related impacts such as flooding, landslides, mudflows or rockfalls. NBS also provide multiple co-benefits such as an increased landscape value for society and biodiversity. Because of their inherent characteristics, NBS implementation are more efficient when supported by participative approaches. At the same time, strengthening democratic and collaborative planning into Living Labs approaches generates an increase in interest. This helps to overcome bottlenecks when implementing measures and provide common ground to provide space for new ideas, to promote innovation and to develop solutions with high acceptance. While co-design and implementing NBS has already been applied and well documented for urban areas, there are few publications on collaborative planning, stakeholder perception and NBS co-implementation in rural mountain areas. In our case study analysis from the EU-funded H2020 project PUSICOS, we present stakeholder views on NBS, their possibility to reduce natural hazards in different mountainous case study areas, different discussed measures, NBS types and stages of implementation. We analyze expectations on Living Lab processes to co-design NBS and important topics to be addressed in these processes from the view, perspective and perception of local stakeholders. Despite the importance of NBS on political and research agenda, in both the literature and the interviews, the concept and ideas are less familiar to stakeholders. NBS are mainly encountered within river restoration measures. The main interest was to reduce risks and to find solutions that were attractive and interesting also from an economical point of view e.g. business models for farmers and landowners and less of the multiple benefits that are most important for stakeholders in urban areas. The collaborative planning approach was seen as important for engaging stakeholders and creating knowledge about NBS. These insights will contribute to the understanding and address the management of intense stakeholder involvement processes, identify barriers that arise, and support in-depth participatory processes.publishedVersio
