    Condition Numbers of Indefinite Rank 2 Ghost Wishart Matrices

    We define an indefinite Wishart matrix as a matrix of the form A=W^{T}W\Sigma, where \Sigma is an indefinite diagonal matrix and W is a matrix of independent standard normals. We focus on the case where W is L by 2 which has engineering applications. We obtain the distribution of the ratio of the eigenvalues of A. This distribution can be "folded" to give the distribution of the condition number. We calculate formulas for W real (\beta=1), complex (\beta=2), quaternionic (\beta=4) or any ghost 0<\beta<\infty.     Continuous Speech Recognition Using Articulatory Data

    In this paper we show that there is measurable information in the articulatory system which can help to disambiguate the acoustic signal. We measure directly the movement of the lips, tongue, jaw, velum and larynx and parameterise this articulatory feature space using principal components analysis. The parameterisation is developed and evaluated using a speaker dependent phone recognition task on a specially recorded TIMIT corpus of 460 sentences. The results show that there is useful supplementary information contained in the articulatory data which yields a small but significant improvement in phone recognition accuracy of 2%. However, preliminary attempts to estimate the articulatory data from the acoustic signal and use this to supplement the acoustic input have not yielded any significant improvement in phone accuracy

    Prostate cancer is a sizeable threat to the health and well-being of men living in the United States, and African American men suffer at a disproportionately higher rate compared with their Caucasian counterparts (American Cancer Society, 2014). Prostate cancer occurs most frequently in older men, but it occurs at an earlier age in African Americans; the differences in tumor type and disease aggressiveness or progression between Caucasian and African American men may drive the disparity (Powell, Bock, Ruterbusch, & Sakr, 2010; Roberts, 2014). Education is important in bringing people into the cancer care continuum, which begins with prevention and screening. Participatory approaches to educating individuals and communities about prostate cancer and informed decision making (IDM) about screening may be an important step in addressing cancer disparities

    TaL: a synchronised multi-speaker corpus of ultrasound tongue imaging, audio, and lip videos

    We present the Tongue and Lips corpus (TaL), a multi-speaker corpus of audio, ultrasound tongue imaging, and lip videos. TaL consists of two parts: TaL1 is a set of six recording sessions of one professional voice talent, a male native speaker of English; TaL80 is a set of recording sessions of 81 native speakers of English without voice talent experience. Overall, the corpus contains 24 hours of parallel ultrasound, video, and audio data, of which approximately 13.5 hours are speech. This paper describes the corpus and presents benchmark results for the tasks of speech recognition, speech synthesis (articulatory-to-acoustic mapping), and automatic synchronisation of ultrasound to audio.     What is the role of culture, diversity, and community engagement in transdisciplinary translational science?

    Concepts of culture and diversity are necessary considerations in the scientific application of theory generation and developmental processes of preventive interventions; yet, culture and/or diversity are often overlooked until later stages (e.g., adaptation [T3] and dissemination [T4]) of the translational science process. Here, we present a conceptual framework focused on the seamless incorporation of culture and diversity throughout the various stages of the translational science process (T1-T5). Informed by a community-engaged research approach, this framework guides integration of cultural and diversity considerations at each phase with emphasis on the importance and value of "citizen scientists" being research partners to promote ecological validity. The integrated partnership covers the first phase of intervention development through final phases that ultimately facilitate more global, universal translation of changes in attitudes, norms, and systems. Our comprehensive model for incorporating culture and diversity into translational research provides a basis for further discussion and translational science development

    American Telemedicine Association’s Principles for Delivering Telerehabilitation Services

    Telehealth is a broad term used to describe the use of electronic or digital information and communications technologies to support clinical healthcare, patient and professional health related education, and public health and health administration. Telerehabilitation refers to the delivery of rehabilitation and habilitation services via information and communication technologies (ICT), also commonly referred to as” telehealth” technologies. Telerehabilitation services can include evaluation, assessment, monitoring, prevention, intervention, supervision, education, consultation, and coaching. Telerehabilitation services can be deployed across all patient populations and multiple healthcare settings including clinics, homes, schools, or community-based worksites. This document was adapted from the American Telemedicine Association’s (ATA) “A Blueprint for Telerehabilitation Guidelines” (2010) and reflects the current utilization of telerehabilitation services. It was developed collaboratively by members of the ATA Telerehabilitation Special Interest Group, with input and guidance from other practitioners in the field, strategic stakeholders, and ATA staff. Its purpose is to inform and assist practitioners in providing effective and secure services that are based on client needs, current empirical evidence, and available technologies. Rehabilitation professionals, in conjunction with professional associations and other organizations are encouraged to use this document as a resource for developing discipline-specific standards, guidelines, and practice requirements.Keywords: American Telemedicine Association, Habilitation, Rehabilitation, Telehealth, Telepractice

    Investigating foods and beverages sold and advertised in deprived urban neighbourhoods in Ghana and Kenya: a cross-sectional study

    Objectives The aim of this study was to characterise the local foods and beverages sold and advertised in three deprived urban African neighbourhoods. Design Cross-sectional observational study. We undertook an audit of all food outlets (outlet type and food sold) and food advertisements. Descriptive statistics were used to summarise exposures. Latent class analysis was used to explore the interactions between food advertisements, food outlet types and food type availability. Setting Three deprived neighbourhoods in African cities: Jamestown in Accra, Ho Dome in Ho (both Ghana) and Makadara in Nairobi (Kenya). Main outcome measure Types of foods and beverages sold and/or advertised. Results Jamestown (80.5%) and Makadara (70.9%) were dominated by informal vendors. There was a wide diversity of foods, with high availability of healthy (eg, staples, vegetables) and unhealthy foods (eg, processed/fried foods, sugar-sweetened beverages). Almost half of all advertisements were for sugar-sweetened beverages (48.3%), with higher exposure to alcohol adverts compared with other items as well (28.5%). We identified five latent classes which demonstrated the clustering of healthier foods in informal outlets, and unhealthy foods in formal outlets. Conclusion Our study presents one of the most detailed geospatial exploration of the urban food environment in Africa. The high exposure of sugar-sweetened beverages and alcohol both available and advertised represent changing urban food environments. The concentration of unhealthy foods and beverages in formal outlets and advertisements of unhealthy products may offer important policy opportunities for regulation and action

    The u'g'r'i'z' Standard Star Network

    We present the 158 standard stars that define the u'g'r'i'z' photometric system. These stars form the basis for the photometric calibration of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The defining instrument system and filters, the observing process, the reduction techniques, and the software used to create the stellar network are all described. We briefly discuss the history of the star selection process, the derivation of a set of transformation equations for the UBVRcIc system, and plans for future work.Comment: References to URLs in paper have been updated to reflect moved website.
