The main objective of this research is to investigate the impact of corporate governance on foreign investment. Also, it aims to check whether there is a relationship between corporate governance on foreign investment. The researcher applied the quantitative approach, using the questionnaire to collect the required data. The participants of the study were financial managers and their representatives in Saudi Arabian shareholding companies. The collected responses were only (60) responses. The Statistical Program for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for data analysis. The study revealed that corporate governance contributes to a reduction in creative accounting practices and thus increases the confidence of foreign investors. The study found that there is a direct association between the application of Corporate Governance and the attraction of foreign investment to the domestic economy in Saudi Arabia. The study recommended that corporate governance not only sets up a system of institutions that govern the relationship between owners, investors, creditors, and managers but also it would contribute in the creation of a good investment environment that attract foreign investment. The obligation to apply corporate governance’ principles is considered one of the essential methods that provide foreign investors with a high level of trust.JEL: G30, G34, O16  Article visualizations

Influences on International Saudi Students’ Sojourner Acculturation in the U.S.

Research on international students’ experiences in tertiary institutions abroad suggest they face difficulties related to culture, language, and socialization (e.g., Andrade, 2006; Hellsten, 2002). To encourage more successful socialization and English language development, the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission established a cap on the enrollment of Saudi students in any institutions abroad since 2014. The effectiveness of these quotas in promoting socialization is not known, but anecdotal evidence and an exploratory study conducted by the author suggest other (perhaps more influential) factors affecting Saudi students’ opportunities for socialization (in this study defined more specifically as sojourner acculturation) and subsequent language development. Previous studies of international students’ social adjustment that included Saudis found they face challenges because of their social, cultural, educational, language and religious backgrounds linked to fundamental differences in societal norms and values between their home and host countries (e.g., Albalawi, 2015; Garza 2015). Building from these findings, and informed by exploratory study results of focus group interviews, the present study aimed to measure the extent to which Saudi international students are socializing in English, and to determine the factors that most influence their outcomes. The study uses a survey administered to 247 Saudi students studying in universities across the U.S. Findings reveal much successful perceived acculturation among Saudi international students and that difficulties correlated significantly with issues of a cultural nature more than they do with any other issues

The involvement of KAV001 in inhibition of LPS/P. gingivalis-induced cytokines

    Get PDF
TNF-a is an important cytokine mediator of inflammation which suggests that inhibition of TNF-a activity may provide potential for clinical application. Recent data indicated that treatment of both human and mouse cells with Kavain significantly modulates P. gingivalis- and LPS-induced TNF-α expression. In order to obtain a selective analog with optimized biological activity and structural physico-chemical properties of Kavain, Kavain analogs were designed and synthesized and found one Kavain analogue (named Kav001) that is similar to Kavain but soluble and does not induce a significant toxicity. Both studies in vitro and in vivo treatment by Kav001 showed stronger biological function as compared to Kavain. Furthermore, most mouse bone marrow macrophages up-regulated Bcl-6 while down-regulating LITAF expression after treatment with Kav001 for 36 h. Consequently, this led to an extension of macrophage pseudopods due to its immune response to P.g. infection/ LPS stimulation. we further found that Kav001 not only inhibits TNF-α, but also IL-1β, IL-6, caspase 1 and neutrophil infiltration in response to LPS. However, this phenomenon cannot be observed when macrophages were treated with LPS plus Kavain. We believe that Kav001 may mediate a novel link between Kav001 and LPS-induced inflammation and may be used as a key inhibitor to LPS-induced inflammation/inflammatory disease

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate the role of leadership, work environment, IT alignment and company performance on the digital transformation of private sector companies in the Western Region of Saudi Arabia. The research problem is the lack of studies about digital transformation in Saudi Arabia. Thus, the research question can be formulated as “what are the implications of leadership, work environment, alignment of IT processes, and company performance on the digital transformation of a company?”   Theoretical Framework: The framework of the study is adopted from the attributes of (1) leadership, (2) work environment, (3) IT processes alignment and (4) company performance. This framework aims to provide understanding on how these variables affect the digital transformation of a company.   Methodology: Primary as well as secondary data have been collected. A survey was conducted on a sample of (461) participants through online questionnaire. The approach chosen for the study is the Quantitative Deductive Approach (QDA), and the data were analyzed using SPSS.   Results and Conclusion: The results of the study concluded that there is a significant positive correlation of leadership, work environment, alignment with IT processes and company performance on the digital transformation.   Research Implications: The study verifies the influence of leadership, work environment, IT processes and company performance on the digital transformation. This is helpful on the managerial level for organizations which are willing to adopt digital transformation. On the academic scope, the study adds contribution to the literature of digital transformation in Saudi Arabia. Socially, it is significant to keep pace with the digitalization trend that is evolving rapidly in the Saudi society.   Originality: This study is a pioneering attempt to enhance the management practices in private sector companies to explore the role of leadership, work environment, alignment with IT processes and company performance on the digital transformation. The findings should motivate organizations to consider these variables when seeking to adopt digital transformation

Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 has taken a centre stage in the development of its healthcare sector through privatization adopting Public Private Partnerships (PPPs). The objective of this study is to provide an overview of healthcare transformation in Saudi Arabia since the launch of the ambitious Vision 2030, identifying issues those need to be addressed and steps taken towards provision of health systems transformation. Literature review was based on extensive review of published and unpublished articles, where different search engines and databases searched using the key words: ‘Saudi Healthcare’, ‘Healthcare transformation’, ‘Saudi vision: 2030’, ‘Public-Private Partnerships’ and ‘Privatization’, in addition to secondary data as published in government reports, policy, government strategy documents and pertinent press releases. The future of the healthcare like many other developing economies continues to weigh policies for universal coverage while containing costs and the national transformation programme driven by social and economic factors has implemented strategic steps to develop its private healthcare system that includes: establishing health clusters, National Centre for Privatization & PPP – an official enabler for privatization of all government sectors and recently approved Private Sector Participation (PSP) Law involves several legislative enablers designed to enhance investor confidence in the privatization process. Although this study demonstrates systemic legislative progress to facilitate transformation process of healthcare sector, also endorses caution and research in identifying barriers to the implementation of PPPs, Saudi workforce development, implementing effective revenue cycle management function for healthcare reimbursement and ensuring vulnerable population access to good quality and tertiary healthcare. As healthcare of Saudi Arabia embarks on the transformation journey facing daunting challenges, but it appears that the government has laid out a roadmap with the legislative framework; however it is important that there is ongoing monitoring with adjustments as this complex and multifaceted process proceeds

EFFICACY AND SAFETY OF MULTI-TARGETED KINASE INHIBITORS IN PROGRESSIVE, RADIOIODINE-REFRACTORY DIFFERENTIATED THYROID CANCERS: A META-ANALYSIS

    Get PDF
Purpose: A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the impact of oral multitargeted kinase inhibitors (MTKIs) in radioactive-iodine refractory locally advanced, recurrent/metastatic differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) on disease control rate (DCR), progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates. Materials and Methods: The PubMed/MEDLINE, CANCERLIT, EMBASE, Cochrane Library database and other search engines were searched to identify randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing MTKIs with placebo in locally advanced, recurrent/metastatic DTC. Pooled data were expressed as odds ratio (OR), with 95% con dence intervals (CIs, Mantel–Haenszel xed-effect model). Results: Three RCTs with a total patient population of 954 patients were identi ed. The use of MTKIs was associated with improved PFS (OR: 0.262, 95% CI: 0.19–0.35; heterogeneity (I2) = 22.4%; P < 0.0001), improved DCR (complete and partial responses + stable disease, P < 0.0001) and improved OS 0.66, 95% CI: 0.46–0.96 (I2 = 43%, P = 0.034). Lenvatinib (compliance = 87%) was associated with more grade ≥3 hypertension. However, its other adverse effects were much lower than sorafenib (compliance = 56%) and vandetanib. Conclusion: In radioactive iodine-refractory recurrent, metastatic DTC patients, lenvatinib and sorafenib were associated with improved PFS, DRC and OS rates, while the compliance was better with lenvatinib. Key words: Meta-analysis, multitargeted kinase inhibitors, progressive differentiated thyroid cancer, radioactive iodine- refractory

The role of clinical decision support systems in preventing stroke in primary care: a systematic review.

    Get PDF
Computerized clinical decision support systems (CDSS) are increasingly being used to facilitate the role of clinicians in complex decision-making processes. This systematic review evaluates evidence of the available CDSS developed and tested to support the decision-making process in primary healthcare for stroke prevention and barriers to practical implementations in primary care settings. A systematic search of Web of Science, Medline Ovid, Embase Ovid, and Cinahl was done. A total of five studies, experimental and observational, were synthesised in this review. This review found that CDSS facilitate decision-making processes in primary health care settings in stroke prevention options. However, barriers were identified in designing, implementing, and using the CDSS

    Get PDF
Background. The relationship between tubal cornual polyps and endometriosis and ovulatory disorders in infertile women is unclear. Our objective was to determine such an association from our database and review the literature. Methods. Twenty-two infertile women with tubal cornual polyps were assessed for coexistence of oligoovulation/anovulation and endometriosis with stratification for polyp diameter (large: ≥5 mm diameter, small <5 mm diameter). Result(s). Oligoovulation/anovulation was more prevalent in women with large versus small tubal cornual polyps (P = 0.0048). Endometriosis was associated with both large and small polyps. Conclusion(s). This case series confirms the association of tubal cornual polyps with oligoovulation/anovulation and endometriosis in infertile women. This case series is limited by a lack of controls
