    Quality assessment of praziquantel tablets sold in medicine stores in Kano Metropolis

    The efficacy, availability, tolerable side effects and relative affordability of praziquantel makes it the drug of choice in the treatment and various control programmes of schistosomiasis in the endemic areas with excellent outcomes. However, there are reports of low cure rate with praziquantel observed by clinicians with various speculations on the likely causes. This study explored poor drug quality as a possible cause of praziquantel treatment failure in schistosomiasis. On the spot sampling of twelve different samples of praziquantel tablets from various patent medicine shops in Kano metropolis were assayed for active ingredient using British Pharmacopeia methods. Only 6 out of 12 (50%) of the praziquantel tablets studied were found to be acceptable of quality. Cost and number of months before expiry date were not found to be significantly associated with the quality of the drug. Poor quality praziquantel currently in the market may possibly explain failure of standard dose of the drug in the treatment of schistosomiasis. Therefore, it is recommended that additional vigilance by regulatory agencies is required to ensure quality drugs in the market.Keywords: Efficacy, Kano, praziquantel, quality, schistosomiasi

    Sulfate-reducing bacteria metabolite detection using GC-MS

    This research was conducted to investigate and compare the various metabolite, produced from the metabolism of two different SRB strain, that were involved in the biocorrosion process. Stainless steel coupons were immersed in two strains of sulfatereducing bacteria, A1H1 and EB3 (designated as SRB1 and SRB2 repectively) were isolated from Port Dickson marine vicinity that were grown in VMNI medium. The immersion period were set for eight days. Analysis of Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) was conducted using –trimethylsilyl (TMS) of N-methyl-N-trimethylsilylfluoracetamide (MSTFA). The data were than analyzed using Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) method to discriminate the unique metabolite according to each strain. The result showed that SRB1 generates less metabolite but high in concentration. Meanwhile, SRB2 shows a variety production of metabolites but less in concentration. Both strains share the same metabolism in the production of nitrogen based substance and production of norvaline and pentanoic acid. SRB1 shows a very distinct feature as the production of ribitol was spotted in its metabolism where it is usually associated with growth. SRB2 showed a very close usage of sulphur by production of methionine. These results suggest that different SRB strain produced different number and type of metabolites in the biocorrosion process

    TableHop: an actuated fabric display using transparent electrodes

    We present TableHop, a tabletop display that provides controlled self-actuated deformation and vibro-tactile feedback to an elastic fabric surface while retaining the ability for high-resolution visual projection. The TableHop surface is made of a highly stretchable pure spandex fabric that is electrostatically actuated using electrodes mounted on its underside. We use transparent indium tin oxide electrodes and high-voltage modulation to create controlled surface deformations. This setup actuates pixels and creates deformations in the fabric up to ±\pm 5mm. Since the electrodes are transparent, the fabric surface can function as a diffuser for rear-projected visual images, and avoid occlusion by users. Users can touch and interact with the fabric to create expressive interactions as with any fabric based shape-changing interface. By using frequency modulation in the high-voltage circuit, we can also create localised tactile sensations on the user's finger-tip when touching the surface. We provide detailed simulation results of the shape of the surface deformation and the frequency of the haptic vibrations. These results can be used to build prototypes of different sizes and form-factors. We finally create a working prototype of TableHop that has 30×\times40 cm surface area and uses a grid of 3×\times3 transparent electrodes. Our prototype uses a maximum of 2.2 mW and can create tactile vibrations of up to 20 HzHz. TableHop can be scaled to large interactive surfaces and integrated with other objects and devices. TableHop will improve user interaction experience on 2.5D deformable displays

    Soft rot is one of the destructive diseases of vegetables including cabbage worldwide. Since the temperature is one of the important factors for destructive nature of disease during storage and transportation, experiments were conducted to standardize optimum temperature for the growth of pathogen which revealed pathogen could grow at all the temperatures from 15 to 40°C. Marked higher growth was recorded at 30°C and considerable growth was at 25 and 35°C. During the study of effect of temperature on soft rot disease after 4 and 6 days of storage at different temperatures it was concluded that 30-35°C mostly favor the soft rot in cabbage and thus emphasis is to be given to prevent the disease during the prevailing temperatures in the region, in order to prevent losses due to the disease in cabbage and other hosts of the same pathogen

    Rational synthesis of ternary PtIrNi nanocrystals with enhanced poisoning tolerance for electrochemical ethanol oxidation

    The development of highly efficient and durable anode materials for ethanol electro-oxidation remains a challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis of Pt1−x−yIrxNiy nanocrystals via one-step procedure by ultrasonic-assisted co-reduction of the metal precursors using ascorbic acid as a mild reducing agent and pluronic F127 as a structure directing agent. The catalytic performance of this ternary catalyst towards electrochemical oxidation of ethanol was examined and compared to its mono and binary Pt counterparts (Pt, Pt1−xIrx, and Pt1−yNiy) that are synthesized by the same method. TEM analysis showed a porous nanodendritic structure for the synthesized ternary electrocatalyst with an average size of 20 ± 1 nm. The electrochemical measurements revealed an electrochemically active surface area, ECSA, of 73 m2 g−1. The as-synthesized ternary electrocatalyst showed an improved catalytic activity towards ethanol oxidation in 1 M KOH with a measured mass activity of 3.8 A mg−1 which is 1.7, 2.0, and 3.2 times higher than that of Pt1−xIrx, Pt1−yNiy, and Pt, respectively. Additionally, the Pt1−x−yIrxNiy nanocrystals expressed high poisoning tolerance (jf/jb = 4.5) and high durability compared to its mono and binary counterparts.Scopu
