Nutritional and Anti-nutritional Levels of Some Local Vegetables( Vernomia anydalira , Manihot esculenta , Teiferia occidentalis , Talinum triangulare , Amaranthus spinosus ) from Delta State, Nigeria
Levels of nutritional and antinutritional levels of five leafy green
vegetables from Delta State, Nigeria were assessed. Analyses were done
using standard analytical methods. Crude protein, crude lipid,
carbohydrate, moisture, ash, crude fiber and colorific values, had
values 4.74%\ub11.48, 4.78%\ub1 0.62, 4.98% \ub1
1.79,80.84%\ub14.69,1.96%\ub10.19,2.00%\ub11.25,78.92\ub121.94Kcal/100g
respectively. The mineral contents were; sodium 4.83 \ub1 0.29ug/g,
calcium 2.18 \ub1 1.54ug/g, potassium 0.97 \ub1 0.04ug/g, magnesium
1.61 \ub1 0.20ug/g, iron 0.34 \ub1 0.21ug/g, zinc 0.04 \ub1
0.03ug/g, phosphorus 1.43 \ub1 0.81ug/g, copper 0.09\ub10.13ug/g.
The antinutrient compositions are oxalate 1.43 \ub10.61mg/l, phytate
9.15 \ub1 2.31mg/l and hydrocyanide 0.15 \ub1 0.1mg/l. These
results showed that these vegetables contain an appreciable amount of
nutrients, mineral elements and low levels of anti-nutrients and should
be included in diets to supplement our daily allowance needed by the
body
Air Pollution tolerance indices (apti) of some plants around Otorogun Gas Plant in Delta State, Nigeria.
The study examined the air pollution tolerance indices (APTI) of six
plant species around Otorogun gas plant in Ughelli-South Local
Government Area of Delta State. Four physiological and biochemical
parameters, which are leaf relative water content (RWC), Ascorbic acid
content (AA), total leaf chlorophyll (TCh) and leaf extract pH were
used to compute the APTI values. The result showed order of tolerance
as Emilia Samtifolia (1.49%)> Manihot esculenta (2.19%)>
Elaesis guineensis (2.41%)> Impereta cylindrical (25.56%)>
Eupatorium Odoratum (35.17%)> Psidium guayava (45.11%). @ JASE
