Student Withdrawal: Test of an Integrated Model

    Get PDF
This study examined a model of student withdrawal that integrated the major elements of Tinto\u27s (1975) Student Integration Model and Bean\u27s (1982, 1983) Industrial Model of Student Attrition. In a sample of 315 college freshman, the results of a path analysis indicated that both social and academic integration were related to satisfaction but only academic integration was related to commitment. Neither social nor academic integration had significant direct effects on intention to withdraw. Further, of the two attitudinal variables, satisfaction was related to intention to withdraw, however, commitment was not. These findings support the integrated model of student withdrawal

The Ethnographer Unbared: Crossing Beaches of the Mind on Tanna

Using the metaphor of beach crossings made famous by ethno-historian Greg DENING (2004), in this article I reflect on my first experience of ethnographic fieldwork. In the article I document how, as a doctoral student investigating 19th century missionary activity, I transitioned from archival to field-based research on the southern Vanuatu island of Tanna in 1975, completed my PhD two years later, and have continued to develop my relations with the Tannese to the present. I argue that this reflects, not only the notable capacity of the Tannese to embrace strangers, but also the extraordinary bond I forged with one "informant", David KAUKARE. I describe how more than any other person it was David, a primary school teacher at an isolated east coast village, who mediated my crossing into a society profoundly different from my own. In the article I explore how together we negotiated the crossings between our interconnecting and shifting worlds—sometimes mindfully, but more often than not serendipitously. In focusing on those initial encounters, I reflect on how prepared—and unprepared—we both were for the experience, and the impact it had on our sense of self and connection with the world

Divergent functional traits in three sympatric Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus morphs are not coupled with the age of the lineage divergence

    Get PDF
Three genetically discrete morphs of Arctic charr in Loch Rannoch, Scotland originated from a recent divergence within the lake (in situ) (piscivore and benthivore morphs) and from secondary contact of two older lineages (ex situ; a planktivore–piscivore/benthivore divergence). To test if the expression of traits with strong functional roles was linked to the age of the divergence, fin and gill anatomy, and dentition were quantified and compared across morphs. Five additional working hypotheses suggesting a rank order of trait expression amongst morphs were also tested. The planktivorous morph had more rays in the dorsal and pectoral fins, longer gill rakers (but not more) as well as a smaller gill cavity than the other two morphs. The piscivorous morph had more palatine teeth and longer teeth on the mandible, pre-maxillary and glossohyal bones, and a larger buccal cavity. These differences indicate a differential response to selection in these functional anatomical features most likely related to morph foraging specialisms. Notably, between-morph divergences in the expression of these traits were not simply linked to the length of divergence between morphs and have arisen equally quickly in the recent (in situ) divergence as they have in older, ex situ divergences

Income and Price Effects in an Alternate Exposition of the Theory of Clubs

As Buchanan noted in his original paper, the economic theory of clubs allows us to move one step forward in closing the awesome Samuelson gap between the purely private and the purely public good. [3, p.l]. Although the theory applies only to goods from which nonpayers can be excluded, the step forward his analysis permits is large. An alternate exposition of the theory is presented in Richard and Peggy Musgrave\u27s textbook [6, pp. 615-622]; and a graphic conden sation of their exposition was developed by Allen, Amacher, and Tollison [1, pp. 386-91]

What Constitutes 'High Energy' In Centrifugal Pumps?

    Get PDF
LectureEvery engineer has his own idea of what makes a centrifugal pump a high energy pump, but getting 2 or more engineers to agree on a definition of "High Energy" is difficult. Is a pump high energy because it runs at > 6000 rpm, or because it consumes more than 4MW, or because it produces > 6000m (20,000 ft) of head? Or, is it high energy because it moves more than 34,000 m3/h (150,000 GPM), but at lower pressure? This is a collection of the results of recent literature searches in a quest to define this term; a term everybody knows and uses, but can't agree on the boundaries of its definition. For most readers, it may be years between such applications. Experiences can get lost in organizations over time. We hope the following pages will help document some parameters for future reference, thus hopefully saving the reader's time and helping to avoid unpleasant experiences
