Multi-wavelength Observations of Blazar AO 0235+164 in the 2008-2009 Flaring State
The blazar AO 0235+164 (z = 0.94) has been one of the most active objects observed by Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) since its launch in Summer 2008. In addition to the continuous coverage by Fermi, contemporaneous observations were carried out from the radio to γ-ray bands between 2008 September and 2009 February. In this paper, we summarize the rich multi-wavelength data collected during the campaign (including F-GAMMA, GASP-WEBT, Kanata, OVRO, RXTE, SMARTS, Swift, and other instruments), examine the cross-correlation between the light curves measured in the different energy bands, and interpret the resulting spectral energy distributions in the context of well-known blazar emission models. We find that the γ-ray activity is well correlated with a series of near-IR/optical flares, accompanied by an increase in the optical polarization degree. On the other hand, the X-ray light curve shows a distinct 20 day high state of unusually soft spectrum, which does not match the extrapolation of the optical/UV synchrotron spectrum. We tentatively interpret this feature as the bulk Compton emission by cold electrons contained in the jet, which requires an accretion disk corona with an effective covering factor of 19% at a distance of 100 R_g. We model the broadband spectra with a leptonic model with external radiation dominated by the infrared emission from the dusty torus
Systematic search for high-energy gamma-ray emission from bow shocks of runaway stars
Context. It has been suggested that the bow shocks of runaway stars are
sources of high-energy gamma rays (E > 100 MeV). Theoretical models predicting
high-energy gamma-ray emission from these sources were followed by the first
detection of non-thermal radio emission from the bow shock of BD+43^\deg 3654
and non-thermal X-ray emission from the bow shock of AE Aurigae. Aims. We
perform the first systematic search for MeV and GeV emission from 27 bow shocks
of runaway stars using data collected by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard
the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi). Methods. We analysed 57 months of
Fermi-LAT data at the positions of 27 bow shocks of runaway stars extracted
from the Extensive stellar BOw Shock Survey catalogue (E-BOSS). A likelihood
analysis was performed to search for gamma-ray emission that is not compatible
with diffuse background or emission from neighbouring sources and that could be
associated with the bow shocks. Results. None of the bow shock candidates is
detected significantly in the Fermi-LAT energy range. We therefore present
upper limits on the high-energy emission in the energy range from 100 MeV to
300 GeV for 27 bow shocks of runaway stars in four energy bands. For the three
cases where models of the high-energy emission are published we compare our
upper limits to the modelled spectra. Our limits exclude the model predictions

Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection in Cattle
Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a cause of respiratory disease in cattle worldwide. It has an integral role in enzootic pneumonia in young dairy calves and summer pneumonia in nursing beef calves. Furthermore, bovine RSV infection can predispose calves to secondary bacterial infection by organisms such asMannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni, resulting in bovine respiratory disease complex, the most prevalent cause of morbidity and mortality among feedlot cattle. Even in cases where animals do not succumb to bovine respiratory disease complex, there can be long-term losses in production performance. This includes reductions in feed efficiency and rate of gain in the feedlot, as well as reproductive performance, milk production, and longevity in the breeding herd. As a result, economic costs to the cattle industry from bovine respiratory disease have been estimated to approach $1 billion annually due to death losses, reduced performance, and costs of vaccinations and treatment modalities. Human and bovine RSV are closely related viruses with similarities in histopathologic lesions and mechanisms of immune modulation induced following infection. Therefore, where appropriate, we provide comparisons between RSV infections in humans and cattle. This review article discusses key aspects of RSV infection of cattle, including epidemiology and strain variability, clinical signs and diagnosis, experimental infection, gross and microscopic lesions, innate and adaptive immune responses, and vaccination strategies
H2 molecule in strong magnetic fields
The Pauli-Hamiltonian of a molecule with fixed nuclei in a strong constant
magnetic field is asymptotic, in norm-resolvent sense, to an effective
Hamiltonian which has the form of a multi-particle Schr\"odinger operator with
interactions given by one-dimensional \delta-potentials. We study this
effective Hamiltonian in the case of the H2 -molecule and establish existence
of the ground state. We also show that the inter-nuclear equilibrium distance
tends to 0 as the field-strength tends to infinity
Gamma Ray Bursts: recent results and connections to very high energy Cosmic Rays and Neutrinos
Gamma-ray bursts are the most concentrated explosions in the Universe. They
have been detected electromagnetically at energies up to tens of GeV, and it is
suspected that they could be active at least up to TeV energies. It is also
speculated that they could emit cosmic rays and neutrinos at energies reaching
up to the eV range. Here we review the recent developments in
the photon phenomenology in the light of \swift and \fermi satellite
observations, as well as recent IceCube upper limits on their neutrino
luminosity. We discuss some of the theoretical models developed to explain
these observations and their possible contribution to a very high energy cosmic

A tight lower bound instance for k-means++ in constant dimension
The k-means++ seeding algorithm is one of the most popular algorithms that is
used for finding the initial centers when using the k-means heuristic. The
algorithm is a simple sampling procedure and can be described as follows: Pick
the first center randomly from the given points. For , pick a point to
be the center with probability proportional to the square of the
Euclidean distance of this point to the closest previously chosen
centers.
The k-means++ seeding algorithm is not only simple and fast but also gives an
approximation in expectation as shown by Arthur and Vassilvitskii.
There are datasets on which this seeding algorithm gives an approximation
factor of in expectation. However, it is not clear from these
results if the algorithm achieves good approximation factor with reasonably
high probability (say ). Brunsch and R\"{o}glin gave a dataset where
the k-means++ seeding algorithm achieves an approximation ratio
with probability that is exponentially small in . However, this and all
other known lower-bound examples are high dimensional. So, an open problem was
to understand the behavior of the algorithm on low dimensional datasets. In
this work, we give a simple two dimensional dataset on which the seeding
algorithm achieves an approximation ratio with probability
exponentially small in . This solves open problems posed by Mahajan et al.

Multifrequency Studies of the Peculiar Quasar 4C +21.35 during the 2010 Flaring Activity
The discovery of rapidly variable Very High Energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) γ-ray emission from 4C +21.35 (PKS 1222+216) by MAGIC on 2010 June 17, triggered by the high activity detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) in high energy (HE; E > 100 MeV) γ-rays, poses intriguing questions on the location of the γ-ray emitting region in this flat spectrum radio quasar. We present multifrequency data of 4C +21.35 collected from centimeter to VHE during 2010 to investigate the properties of this source and discuss a possible emission model. The first hint of detection at VHE was observed by MAGIC on 2010 May 3, soon after a γ-ray flare detected by Fermi-LAT that peaked on April 29. The same emission mechanism may therefore be responsible for both the HE and VHE emission during the 2010 flaring episodes. Two optical peaks were detected on 2010 April 20 and June 30, close in time but not simultaneous with the two γ-ray peaks, while no clear connection was observed between the X-ray and γ-ray emission. An increasing flux density was observed in radio and mm bands from the beginning of 2009, in accordance with the increasing γ-ray activity observed by Fermi-LAT, and peaking on 2011 January 27 in the mm regime (230 GHz). We model the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 4C +21.35 for the two periods of the VHE detection and a quiescent state, using a one-zone model with the emission coming from a very compact region outside the broad line region. The three SEDs can be fit with a combination of synchrotron self-Compton and external Compton emission of seed photons from a dust torus, changing only the electron distribution parameters between the epochs. The fit of the optical/UV part of the spectrum for 2010 April 29 seems to favor an inner disk radius of <six gravitational radii, as one would expect from a prograde-rotating Kerr black hole
The Epsilon Calculus and Herbrand Complexity
Hilbert's epsilon-calculus is based on an extension of the language of
predicate logic by a term-forming operator . Two fundamental
results about the epsilon-calculus, the first and second epsilon theorem, play
a role similar to that which the cut-elimination theorem plays in sequent
calculus. In particular, Herbrand's Theorem is a consequence of the epsilon
theorems. The paper investigates the epsilon theorems and the complexity of the
elimination procedure underlying their proof, as well as the length of Herbrand
