© Abraham S.H. Breure, Rafael Araujo. Among the historical collection gathered by the ‘Comisión Científica del Pacífico’ during 1862–1865, type material was found of one of the species described on the basis of the material collected shortly afterwards. Inspection of the types revealed that only one specimen may be considered as type material of Bulimus aristaceus Crosse, 1869; this specimen is now designated as the lectotype. The other specimens are described as a new species, Plekocheilus (P.) cecepeus.Peer Reviewe

Molecular phylogeny of the Orthalicoidea land snails: Further support and surprises

    Get PDF
The superfamily Orthalicoidea comprises approximately 2,000 species of terrestrial gastropods, mostly concentrated in the Neotropics but also present in southern Africa and Oceania. We provide a multi-marker molecular phylogeny of this superfamily, reassessing its family- and genus-level classification. We exclude two families from the group, Odontostomidae and Vidaliellidae, transferring them to Rhytidoidea based on their phylogenetic relationships as recovered herein. Two new families are recognized herein as members of Orthalicoidea, Tomogeridae and Cyclodontinidae fam. nov. The family Megaspiridae and the subfamily Prestonellinae are paraphyletic but are retained herein for taxonomic stability. The subfamily Placostylinae is synonymized with Bothriembryontinae. The new genera Alterorhinus gen. nov. and Sanniostracus gen. nov. containing some Brazilian species are described here to better reflect the phylogeny. The fossil record and paleobiogeographic history of the group is explored under the new phylogenetic framework

[EN] The material collected during a Spanish, multi-year expedition to the Neotropics in the 1860s was described by J.G. Hidalgo in the ‘Moluscos del Viaje al Pacifico’. Correspondence between Hidalgo and H. Crosse reveals how part of the material collected by the ‘Comisión Cientifíca del Pacífico’ was identified by Crosse, some of it published as new species in his Journal de Conchyliologie. This correspondence further reveals how the obstacles to publish the results of the expedition were overcome, and sheds light on the actual publication date of the different parts. A reconstruction of the contacts of Hidalgo shows how diversified the network of this malacologist was.[ES] El material recogido durante una expedición española de varios años al Neotrópico en la década de 1860 fue descrito por J.G. Una reconstrucción de los contactos de Hidalgo muestra cuán diversificada era la red de este malacólogo.ASHB received partial financial support from the SyNTHeSyS Project (project eSTAF- 5322), which is financed by the european Community research Infrastructure Action under the FP7 Integrating Activities Programme, at the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (CSIC).Peer reviewe

The Neotropical land snails (Mollusca, Gastropoda) collected by the `Comisión Científica del Pacífico'

The land snails collected by the ‘Comisión Científica del Pacifíco’ (CCP), a Spanish expedition to South and Central America from 1862–1866, are restudied and revised. The historical context of the expedition and the study of its collected material are described. Biographical data is given for the main persons involved. The land snails were previously studied by Joaquin Hidalgo between 1867 and 1893. A total of 3470 specimens belonging to 211 species are treated in this paper. Of 34 species mentioned by Hidalgo is his catalogue, the corresponding material could not be located. A lectotype is now designated for Drymaeus (Drymaeus) chanchamayensis (Hidalgo, 1870); Bulimus visendus Hidalgo, 1869 is now placed in the genus Synapterpes Pilsbry, 1896, a new combination. This work was supported by a grant from the SYNTHESYS Project (http://www.synthesys.info) which was financed by European Community Research Infrastructure Action under the FP7 Integrating Activities Programme; the grant was awarded to ASHB under number ES-TAF-5322.N

The type status is described of 96 taxa classified within the superfamily Orthalicoidea and present in the Mollusca collection of the Museum für Naturkunde der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Lectotypes are designated for the following taxa: Orthalicus elegans Rolle, 1895; Bulimus maranhonensis Albers, 1854; Orthalicus nobilis Rolle, 1895; Orthalichus tricinctus Martens, 1893. Orthalicus sphinx tresmariae is introduced as new name for Zebra sphinx turrita Strebel, 1909, not Zebra quagga turrita Strebel, 1909. The following synonyms are established: Zebra crosseifischeri Strebel, 1909 = Orthalicus princeps fischeri Martens, 1893; Orthalicus isabellinus Martens, 1873 = Orthalicus bensoni (Reeve, 1849); Zebra zoniferus naesiotes Strebel, 1909 = Orthalicus undatus (Bruguière, 1789); Porphyrobaphe (Myiorthalicus) dennisoni pallida Strebel, 1909 = Hemibulimus dennisoni (Reeve, 1848); Zebra delphinus pumilio Strebel, 1909 = Orthalicus delphinus (Strebel, 1909); Orthalicus (Laeorthalicus) reginaeformis Strebel, 1909 = Corona perversa (Swainson, 1821); Bulimus (Eurytus) corticosus Sowerby III, 1895 = Plekocheilus (Eurytus) stuebeli Martens, 1885. The taxon Bulimus (Eudioptus) psidii Martens, 1877 is now placed within the family Sagdidae, tentatively in the genus Platysuccinea. Appendices are included with an index to all the types of Orthalicoidea extant (including those listed by Köhler 2007) and a partial list of letters present in the correspondence archives
