Fractals for the Sustainable Design of Engineered Particulate Systems
The engineering properties of particulate materials are the collective manifestation of interactions among their constituent particles and are structures within which particles adopt their spatial arrangement. For the first time in the literature, this paper employs an extended concept of âfractalsâ to show that materials constituting particles of a certain size can be rationalized in three universal fractals. Within each fractal, materials build repeatable, reproducible, and predictable traits, and exhibit the stress-strain behaviors of nondifferentiable, self-similar trajectories. We present experimental evidence for such repeatable traits by subjecting six different particulate materials to static undrained isotropic, static undrained anisotropic, and cyclic undrained isotropic stresses. This paper shows that universal fractals are associated with fractal structures; herein, we explore the matters that influence their spatial arrangement. Within the context of sustainable design, ways of engineering natural particulate systems to improve a productâs physical and hydromechanical properties are already well established. In this review, a novel extended concept of fractals is introduced to inform the biomimetic design of particulate systems, to show how biomimicry can benefit in preserving general behavioral traits, and how biomimicry can offer predicated forms, thereby enhancing the design efficiency. To pursue such an ideal, processes that lead to the engineering of natural materials should not compromise their loyalty to the parent universal fractal
Integrable models: from dynamical solutions to string theory
We review the status of integrable models from the point of view of their
dynamics and integrability conditions. Some integrable models are discussed in
detail. We comment on the use it is made of them in string theory. We also
discuss the Bethe Ansatz solution of the SO(6) symmetric Hamiltonian with SO(6)
boundary.

The ability of freeze-dried bull spermatozoa to induce calcium oscillations and resumption of meiosis
The objective was to investigate the ability of freeze-dried (FD) bull spermatozoa to induce calcium oscillations in mouse oocytes and meiosis resumption in in vitro-matured bovine oocytes after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Bull spermatozoa were freeze-dried and stored for 1 y at +25, +4, or -196 degrees C. In the first experiment, rehydrated sperm heads were microinseminated into hybrid mouse oocytes loaded with fluo-3/AM, and the kinetics of intracellular calcium concentration was monitored for I h. Repetitive increases of intracellular calcium concentration were recorded in the majority of injected oocytes, with exception of a few oocytes injected with FD sperm heads stored at +4 degrees C (11%) and +25 degrees C (8%) that exhibited a single increase or no response (non-oscillated). The proportion of oocytes that oscillated with high frequency (>= 10 spikes/h) was higher in the non-dried control group (79%; P < 0.05) than in the FD groups (58, 55, and 54% for storage at -196, +4, and +25 degrees C, respectively). In the second experiment, control and FD spermatozoa were microinseminated into in vitro-matured, denuded bovine oocytes. The oocytes were fixed and stained 12 h after ICSI. A higher proportion of bovine oocytes injected with control spermatozoa (70%; P < 0.05) resumed meiosis than those injected with +25, +4 and -196 degrees C stored FD spermatozoa (53, 48, and 57%, respectively). The proportion of ICSI oocytes that developed to the pronuclear stage (complete activation) was higher in the control group (64%; P < 0.05) than those in all the FD groups (34, 27, and 28% for storage at -196, +4, and +25 degrees C, respectively). Thus, the ability of bull spermatozoa to induce frequent intracellular calcium spikes in mouse oocytes was impaired by the process of freeze-drying, without differences among storage at +25, +4 or -196 degrees C, probably resulting in a lower proportion of bovine oocytes that resumed meiosis and/or developed to the pronuclear stage.ArticleTHERIOGENOLOGY. 71(3):543-552 (2009)journal articl
Remarks on Screening in a Gauge-Invariant Formalism
In this paper we display a direct and physically attractive derivation of the
screening contribution to the interaction potential in the Chiral Schwinger
model and generalized Maxwell-Chern-Simons gauge theory. It is shown that these
results emerge naturally when a correct separation between gauge-invariant and
gauge degrees of freedom is made. Explicit expressions for gauge-invariant

A Deep Learning Based Suggested Model to Detect Necrotising Enterocolitis in Abdominal Radiography Images
Despite decades of exploration into necrotising
enterocolitis (NEC), we still lack the capacity to accurately diagnose the disease to improve outcomes in its management. Existing diagnostics struggle to delineate NEC from other neonatal intestinal diseases; it is also unable to highlight those likely to deteriorate to needing emergency life-saving surgery before it is too late. The diagnosis of NEC is heavily dependent on interpretation of radiological findings, especially abdominal radiography (AR) and abdominal ultrasound (AUS). Interexpert variability in interpreting AR imaging, and in the case of AUS, performing and interpreting the test, remains an unresolved challenge. With the compounding impact of the shrinking radiology workforce, a novel approach is imperative. Computer assisted detection (CAD) and classification of abnormal pathology in medical imaging is a rapidly evolving field of clinical and biomedical research. This technology is widely used as a preliminary screening tool. This research paper
proposes a deep learning-based model to classify AR images in an automated manner, generating class activation maps (CAM) from various imaging features consistent with NEC pathology, as agreed by expert consensus papers (in neonatology and paediatric radiology). It also compares it with conventional machine learning methods. The suggested model aims to
produce heatmaps for various imaging features to highlight NEC pathology in AR (or in future AUS). Once the model is trained, validation is done through quantitative measures and visually by the attending radiologist (clinician) reviewing the validity of the colour maps highlighting the pathology of the AR image (future extension to AUS). As the volume of imaging data is increasing year by year, CAD can be a key strategy to assist radiology departments meet service needs. This technology can greatly assist in screening for NEC, improving the detection of NEC and potentially aid in the earlier identification of disease. Furthermore, it can fast track research cost effectively by creating big data through the automatic labeling of imaging data to create big-data for NEC databases
A combined treatment of ionomycin with ethanol improves blastocyst development of bovine oocytes harvested from stored ovaries and microinjected with spermatozoa
Regardless of the presence of sperm-borne oocyte-activating factors, activation of bovine oocytes with exogenous activation stimuli is required for further development after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The current study was designed to develop a new activation regimen for improving the blastocyst yield after ICSI of bovine oocytes harvested from ovaries stored at 10 to 12 degrees C for 24 h. After ICSI, oocytes were treated with 5 mu M ionomycin for 5 min, 7% ethanol for 5 or 10 min, ionomycin followed by ethanol (5 or 10 min), ionomycin followed by 10 mu g/mL cycloheximide for 5 h, or ionomycin followed by 1.9 mM 6-dimethylaminopurine for 3 h. Across the activation regimens, the cleavage rates of ICSI oocytes (45% to 77%) were higher than those of parthenogenetically activated oocytes (11% to 21%; P 0.05). Higher blastocyst yields were due to increasing the proportion of ICSI oocytes that passed through the early postfertilization events until cleavage. None of the regimens have any adverse effect on the quality of the blastocysts regarding the total cell number or the proportion of the inner cell mass cells. Thus, a new activation regimen using two triggers for single calcium increase effectively improved blastocyst yield after bovine ICSI using oocytes harvested from stored ovaries.ArticleTHERIOGENOLOGY. 72(4):453-460 (2009)journal articl
Optimising Spectroscopic and Photometric Galaxy Surveys: Efficient Target Selection and Survey Strategy
The next generation of spectroscopic surveys will have a wealth of
photometric data available for use in target selection. Selecting the best
targets is likely to be one of the most important hurdles in making these
spectroscopic campaigns as successful as possible. Our ability to measure dark
energy depends strongly on the types of targets that we are able to select with
a given photometric data set. We show in this paper that we will be able to
successfully select the targets needed for the next generation of spectroscopic
surveys. We also investigate the details of this selection, including
optimisation of instrument design and survey strategy in order to measure dark
energy. We use color-color selection as well as neural networks to select the
best possible emission line galaxies and luminous red galaxies for a
cosmological survey. Using the Fisher matrix formalism we forecast the
efficiency of each target selection scenario. We show how the dark energy
figures of merit change in each target selection regime as a function of target
type, survey time, survey density and other survey parameters. We outline the
optimal target selection scenarios and survey strategy choices which will be

Quasinormal modes of d-dimensional spherical black holes with a near extreme cosmological constant
We derive an expression for the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations in
near extreme d-dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter and Reissner-Nordstrom-de
Sitter black holes. We show that, in the near extreme limit, the dynamics of
the scalar field is characterized by a Poschl-Teller effective potential. The
results are qualitatively independent of the spacetime dimension and field
