    Rheological properties of magnetic biogels

    Get PDF
We report an experimental and theoretical study of the rheological properties of magnetic biogels consisting of fibrin polymer networks with embedded magnetite nanoparticles, swollen by aqueous solutions. We studied two types of magnetic biogels, differenced by the presence or absence of an applied magnetic field during the initial steps of cross-linking. The experiments demonstrated very strong dependence of the elastic modulus of the magnetic biogels on the concentration of the magnetic particles. We finally developed some theoretical models that explain the observed strong concentration effects. This study was supported by projects FIS2013-41821-R (Plan Nacional de InvestigaciĂłn CientĂfica, Desarrollo e InnovaciĂłn TecnolĂłgica, MINECO, Spain, co-funded by ERDF, European Union) and FIS2017-85954-R (Ministerio de EconomĂa, Industria y Competitividad, MINECO, andAgencia Estatal de InvestigaciĂłn, AEI, Spain, co-funded by Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional, FEDER, European Union). Search for the production of W^{\pm} W^{\pm} W^{\mp} events at \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

    Get PDF
A search for the production of events containing three W bosons predicted by the standard model is reported. The search is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb^{-1}. The search is performed in final states with three leptons (electrons or muons), or with two same-charge leptons plus two jets. The observed (expected) significance of the signal for W^{\pm} W^{\pm} W^{\mp} production is 0.60 (1.78) standard deviations, and the ratio of the measured signal yield to that expected from the standard model is 0.34_{-0.34}^{+0.62}. Limits are placed on three anomalous quartic gauge couplings and on the production of massive axionlike particles

Report number: CMS-HIG-20-013, CERN-EP-2022-120.Production cross sections of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a pair of W bosons are measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The analysis targets Higgs bosons produced via gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and in association with a W or Z boson. Candidate events are required to have at least two charged leptons and moderate missing transverse momentum, targeting events with at least one leptonically decaying W boson originating from the Higgs boson. Results are presented in the form of inclusive and differential cross sections in the simplified template cross section framework, as well as couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons and fermions. The data set collected by the CMS detector during 2016-2018 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^−1. The signal strength modifier ÎŒ, defined as the ratio of the observed production rate in a given decay channel to the standard model expectation, is measured to be ÎŒ = 0.95 +0.10−0.09. All results are found to be compatible with the standard model within the uncertainties.SCOAP3

Release and preservation of data used by the CMS Collaboration as the basis for publications is guided by the CMS policy as stated in CMS data preservation, re-use and open access policy.Code availability: The CMS core software is publically available at https://github.com/cms-sw/cmssw.Copyright . Protons consist of three valence quarks, two up-quarks and one down-quark, held together by gluons and a sea of quark-antiquark pairs. Collectively, quarks and gluons are referred to as partons. In a proton-proton collision, typically only one parton of each proton undergoes a hard scattering – referred to as single-parton scattering – leaving the remainder of each proton only slightly disturbed. Here, we report the study of double- and triple-parton scatterings through the simultaneous production of three J/ψ mesons, which consist of a charm quark-antiquark pair, in proton-proton collisions recorded with the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. We observed this process – reconstructed through the decays of J/ψ mesons into pairs of oppositely charged muons – with a statistical significance above five standard deviations. We measured the inclusive fiducial cross-section to be 272+141−104(stat)±17(syst)fb, and compared it to theoretical expectations for triple-J/ψ meson production in single-, double- and triple-parton scattering scenarios. Assuming factorization of multiple hard-scattering probabilities in terms of single-parton scattering cross-sections, double- and triple-parton scattering are the dominant contributions for the measured process.SCOAP3.Change history: 27 February 2023A Correction to this paper has been published: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41567-023-01992-

Search for light Higgs bosons from supersymmetric cascade decays in pp collisions at √s=13TeV

A search is reported for pairs of light Higgs bosons (H1) produced in supersymmetric cascade decays in f inal states with small missing transverse momentum. A data set of LHC pp collisions collected with the CMS detector at √s = 13TeV and corresponding to an integrated lumi nosity of 138fb−1 is used. The search targets events where both H1 bosons decay into b¯b pairs that are reconstructed as large-radius jets using substructure techniques. No evi dence is found for an excess of events beyond the back ground expectations of the standard model (SM). Results from the search are interpreted in the next-to-minimal super symmetric extension of the SM, where a “singlino” of small mass leads to squark and gluino cascade decays that can pre dominantly end in a highly Lorentz-boosted singlet-like H1 andasinglino-likeneutralinoofsmalltransversemomentum. Report number: CMS-HIG-19-010, CERN-EP-2022-027.Measurements of Higgs boson production, where the Higgs boson decays into a pair of τ leptons, are presented, using a sample of proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{−1}. Three analyses are presented. Two are targeting Higgs boson production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion: a neural network based analysis and an analysis based on an event categorization optimized on the ratio of signal over background events. These are complemented by an analysis targeting vector boson associated Higgs boson production. Results are presented in the form of signal strengths relative to the standard model predictions and products of cross sections and branching fraction to τ leptons, in up to 16 different kinematic regions. For the simultaneous measurements of the neural network based analysis and the analysis targeting vector boson associated Higgs boson production signal strengths are found to be 0.82 ± 0.11 for inclusive Higgs boson production, 0.67 ± 0.19 (0.81 ± 0.17) for the production mainly via gluon fusion (vector boson fusion), and 1.79 ± 0.45 for vector boson associated Higgs boson production.SCOAP3

© 2021 The CMS Collaboration. The production of Z boson pairs in proton–proton (pp) collisions, pp → (Z/∗)(Z/∗) → 2ℓ2ℓâ€Č, where ℓ,ℓâ€Č = e or ÎŒ, is studied at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137fb−1, collected during 2016–2018. The ZZ production cross section, tot(pp → ZZ) = 17.4 ± 0.3 (stat) ± 0.5 (syst) ± 0.4 (Theo) ± 0.3 (lumi) pb, measured for events with two pairs of opposite-sign, same-flavor leptons produced in the mass region 60 < ℓ+ℓ− < 120 GeV is consistent with standard model predictions. Differential cross sections are also measured and agree with theoretical predictions. The invariant mass distribution of the four-lepton system is used to set limits on anomalous ZZZ and ZZ couplings.SCOAP

Performance of the CMS muon trigger system in proton-proton collisions at √(s) = 13

© Copyright 2021 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration. The muon trigger system of the CMS experiment uses a combination of hardware and software to identify events containing a muon. During Run 2 (covering 2015–2018) the LHC achieved instantaneous luminosities as high as 2 × 1034 while delivering proton-proton collisions at √(s) = 13. The challenge for the trigger system of the CMS experiment is to reduce the registered event rate from about 40MHz to about 1kHz. Significant improvements important for the success of the CMS physics program have been made to the muon trigger system via improved muon reconstruction and identification algorithms since the end of Run 1 and throughout the Run 2 data-taking period. The new algorithms maintain the acceptance of the muon triggers at the same or even lower rate throughout the data-taking period despite the increasing number of additional proton-proton interactions in each LHC bunch crossing. In this paper, the algorithms used in 2015 and 2016 and their improvements throughout 2017 and 2018 are described. Measurements of the CMS muon trigger performance for this data-taking period are presented, including efficiencies, transverse momentum resolution, trigger rates, and the purity of the selected muon sample. This paper focuses on the single- and double-muon triggers with the lowest sustainable transverse momentum thresholds used by CMS. The efficiency is measured in a transverse momentum range from 8 to several hundred.SCOAP3
