    The effects of a selected durable press finish upon cotton sheetings of selected fiber characteristics

    The major purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a durable press finish upon strength and wrinkle recovery characteristics of selected cotton sheetings following a series of launderings. The objectives were (1) to compare the breaking strength, tear resistance, and wrinkle recovery of durable press treated sheetings with similar sheetings having no durable press treatment, and (2) to determine whether differences in treatment are reflected in the performance of cottons of varying fiber length and fiber strength used in the sheetings. The ravelled strip method was used to test breaking strength, the Elmendorf test was used for tear resistance, and the Monsanto method was used for wrinkle recovery. All testing procedures were conducted according to specifications set by the American Society for Testing and Materials

    An African American woman's educational journey: pragmatic and pedagogical practices of fantasy

    My dissertation is an autobiographical narrative about my journey through a non-pedagogical and oppressive school system, to an oppressive marriage, and back to a graduate program that, in my opinion, epitomizes the essence of pedagogy. I explain how fantasy theory has situated itself in my life as a metacognitive tool in order to save my conscious reality as it guided me towards transcendence. I address my introduction to fantasy as a child inside of the classroom. I talk about mis-educative experiences inside of the classroom and provide examples of those experiences. I discuss microaggression and how it was played out during my earlier educational years as well as describe my experience with internal-microaggression during my master's program. I explain how fantasy returned to my life during my marriage and divorce. I also discuss my relationship with the Black church utilizing soul therapy. I talk about my African American contemporary Christian romance novels and how writing them allowed me to be reflective on my past relationships so I could still have faith and hope of love in my future. I conclude my dissertation by providing examples of my teaching pedagogy and my inspirations for those reading my dissertation. In essence this dissertation is a qualitative culmination of past recollections, current reflections, and future endeavors as I continue to learn and transcend through my lifelong journey with education

    Differences in maternal verbalizations and involvement during Hawaiian mother-child interactions

    This dissertation examined differences in the behavior of middle and low socioeconomic status (SES) mothers during interactions with their preschool age children while engaged in free-play and task-oriented sessions. The maternal variables of interest were complexity of maternal speech and the degree of involvement during interactions with their children. The relationship between these variables and children's performance on cognitive and language tasks was also examined. Forty Hawaiian/part Hawaiian mother-child dyads were recruited to participate in this study (20 middle- and 20 low-SES). Dyads made two visits. During the first visit, mothers and their children were videotaped together for 20 minutes in a free-play session and 10 minutes in a task-oriented session. At the end of the videotaping session the children were administered the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R). During the second visit the children were administered the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI)

    Neuropsychiatric symptoms following metal-on-metal implant failure with cobalt and chromium toxicity

    Background: There were at least 31,171 metal-on-metal (MoM) hip implants in the UK between 2003 and 2011. Some of these were subject to failure and widescale recalls and revisions followed. Method This is a presentation of ten cases (mean age 60 years) where we evaluated neuropsychiatric morbidity following metal-on-metal hip implant failure and revision. Implants were ASR total hip replacement (acetabular implant, taper sleeve adaptor and unipolar femoral implants) performed between 2005 and 2009. This case series describes, for the first time, neuropsychiatric complications after revision where there has been cobalt and chromium toxicity. Results Pre-revision surgery, nine patients had toxic levels of chromium and cobalt (mean level chromium 338 nmol/l, mean cobalt 669.4 nmol/l). Depression assessment showed 9 of 9 respondents fulfilled the BDI criteria for depression and 3 of these were being treated. 7 of 9 patients showing short term memory deficit with mean mini mental state examination score of 24.2. The normal population mean MMSE for this group would be expected to be 28 with <25 indicating possible dementia. Conclusions We found neurocognitive and depressive deficits after cobalt and chromium metallosis following MoM implant failure. Larger studies of neurocognitive effects are indicated in this group. There may be implications for public health

    Safety and Efficacy of Adalimumab in Patients with Noninfectious Uveitis in an Ongoing Open-Label Study: VISUAL III

    PURPOSE: To evaluate safety and efficacy of adalimumab in patients with noninfectious intermediate, posterior, or panuveitis. DESIGN: Phase 3, open-label, multicenter clinical trial extension (VISUAL III). PARTICIPANTS: Adults meeting treatment failure (TF) criteria or who completed VISUAL I or II (phase 3, randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled) without TF. METHODS: Patients received adalimumab 40 mg every other week. Interim follow-up data were described from VISUAL III weeks 0 through 78. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Disease quiescence, steroid-free quiescence, active inflammatory chorioretinal/retinal vascular lesions, anterior chamber cell grade, vitreous haze grade, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and corticosteroid dose. Binary data were reported using nonresponder imputation (NRI), continuous data using last observation carried forward and as-observed analysis, and corticosteroid dose using observed-case analysis. Adverse events (AEs) were reported from first adalimumab dose in VISUAL III through interim cutoff. RESULTS: Of 424 patients enrolled, 371 were included in intent-to-treat analysis. At study entry, 242 of 371 (65%) patients had active uveitis; 60% (145/242, NRI) achieved quiescence at week 78, and 66% (95/143, as-observed) of those were corticosteroid free. At study entry, 129 of 371 (35%) patients had inactive uveitis; 74% (96/129, NRI) achieved quiescence at week 78, and 93% (89/96, as-observed) of those were corticosteroid free. Inflammatory lesions, anterior chamber grade, and vitreous haze grade showed initial improvement followed by decline in patients with active uveitis and remained stable in patients with inactive uveitis. BCVA improved in patients with active uveitis from weeks 0 to 78 (0.27 to 0.14 logMAR; left and right eyes; as-observed) and remained stable in patients with inactive uveitis. Mean corticosteroid dose decreased from 13.6 mg/day (week 0) to 2.6 mg/day (week 78) in patients with active uveitis and remained stable in those with inactive uveitis (1.5-1.2 mg/day). AEs (424 events/100 patient-years) and serious AEs (16.5 events/100 patient-years) were comparable with previous VISUAL trials. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with active uveitis at study entry who received adalimumab therapy were likely to achieve quiescence, improve visual acuity, and reduce their daily uveitis-related systemic corticosteroid use. Most patients with inactive uveitis at study entry sustained quiescence without a systemic corticosteroid dose increase. No new safety signals were identified

    Negative feedback at kinetochores underlies a responsive spindle checkpoint signal

    Kinetochores are specialized multi-protein complexes that play a crucial role in maintaining genome stability. They bridge attachments between chromosomes and microtubules during mitosis and they activate the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) to arrest division until all chromosomes are attached. Kinetochores are able to efficiently integrate these two processes because they can rapidly respond to changes in microtubule occupancy by switching localized SAC signalling ON or OFF. We show that this responsiveness arises because the SAC primes kinetochore phosphatases to induce negative feedback and silence its own signal. Active SAC signalling recruits PP2A-B56 to kinetochores where it antagonizes Aurora B to promote PP1 recruitment. PP1 in turn silences the SAC and delocalizes PP2A-B56. Preventing or bypassing key regulatory steps demonstrates that this spatiotemporal control of phosphatase feedback underlies rapid signal switching at the kinetochore by: allowing the SAC to quickly transition to the ON state in the absence of antagonizing phosphatase activity; and ensuring phosphatases are then primed to rapidly switch the SAC signal OFF when kinetochore kinase activities are diminished by force-producing microtubule attachments.</p

    Encephalomyocarditis virus may use different pathways to initiateinfection of primary human cardiomyocytes

    Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) caninfect a wide range of vertebrate species including swineand non-human primates, but few data are available forhumans. We therefore wanted to gain further insight intothe mechanisms involved in EMCV infection of humancells. For this purpose, we analyzed the permissiveness ofprimary human cardiomyocytes towards two strains ofEMCV; a pig myocardial strain (B279/95) and a rat strain(1086C). In this study, we show that both strains productivelyinfect primary human cardiomyocytes and inducecomplete cytolysis. Binding and infection inhibitionexperiments indicated that attachment and infection areindependent of sialic acid and heparan sulfate for B279/95and dependent for 1086C. Sequence comparison betweenthe two strains and three-dimensional analysis of the capsidrevealed that six of the seven variable residues are surfaceexposed,suggesting a role for these amino acids in binding.Moreover, analysis of variants isolated from the 1086Cstrain revealed the importance of lysine 231 of VP1 in theattachment of EMCV to cell-surface sialic acid residues.Together, these results show a potential for EMCV strainsto use at least two different binding possibilities to initiateinfection and provide new insights into the mechanismsinvolved in primary human cell recognition by EMCV

In this context, the proteostasis network (PN) is essential to achieve a stable and functional proteome. Disruption of the PN is associated with aging and can lead to and/or potentiate the occurrence of many neurodegenerative diseases (ND).     Response perseveration and ventral prefrontal sensitivity to reward and punishment in male problem gamblers and smokers

    Pathological gambling (PG) is associated with maladaptive perseverative behavior, but the underlying mechanism and neural circuitry is not completely clear. Here, the hypothesis was tested that PG is characterized by response perseveration and abnormalities in reward and/or punishment sensitivity in the ventral frontostriatal circuit. Executive functioning was assessed to verify if these effects are independent of the dorsal frontostriatal circuit. A group of smokers was also included to examine whether impairments in PG generalize to substance use disorders. Response perseveration and reward/punishment sensitivity were measured with a probabilistic reversal-learning task, in which subjects could win and lose money. Executive functioning was measured with a planning task, the Tower of London. Performance and fMRI data were acquired in 19 problem gamblers, 19 smokers, and 19 healthy controls. Problem gamblers showed severe response perseveration, associated with reduced activation of right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex in response to both monetary gain and loss. Results did not fully generalize to smokers. Planning performance and related activation of the dorsal frontostriatal circuit were intact in both problem gamblers and smokers. PG is related to response perseveration and diminished reward and punishment sensitivity as indicated by hypoactivation of the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex when money is gained and lost. Moreover, intact planning abilities and normal dorsal frontostriatal responsiveness indicate that this deficit is not due to impaired executive functioning. Response perseveration and ventral prefrontal hyporesponsiveness to monetary loss may be markers for maladaptive behavior seen in chemical and nonchemical addictions. © 2009 Nature Publishing Group All rights reserved
